When Shark Norma was enacted, commercial fishing boats have been able to come in and decimate the sport fish populations under the guise of fishing
for sharks. The two boats boarded at Loreto had a couple of shark and tons of dorado. If you click on this site, you will be able to send a letter

Ok now I am confused
I thought that Norm 29 was passed to protect the sharks. I remember an article in the Tribuna of a boat that was boarded in San Lucas and if they had
not had sharks in their nets, the powers who boarded would not have been able to do anything about the other species that they found.
Dont get me wrong....I am completely against this law but would like to have my confusion cleared.
Does anyone know?...Osprey?

There's a market for Dorado, around $8.00 US/lb. They call 'em mahi-mahi.

Judy, what happened is that the commercial fishermen were upset that they were being excluded from fishin close to shore and could not keep their
"bycatch" meaning all the fish they wanted to catch anyway. So they put a lot of pressure on the legislature who, I know this is hard to believe,
were too busy to really read the laws, and they passed the thing. What it did was to allow long line fishing within 5 miles of shore and all the
commercial fishing boats had to say was that the fish they had were bycatch and not the intended species. That means that you put out 5 miles of
hooks and what you want is sharks but you will take anything that comes to your hook.

I would suggest you read the information from Seawatch. I am not neccesarily supporting them in any way, but they do seem to be more active as of
late. Also you can get great information from the Billfish Foundation on this law also.
Calderon went on record as saying it should prove to be a good conservation issue and was initially in favor of the law.
