Carnitas

First light today found three old men, one panga full of gas and gear ready to fish. Sand beach launches are always tricky and this morning, a two to three foot curl from the wind, charter cruiser wakes and a swell from the northeast would try our skill and our fortune. The big center console 22 footer went in Okay but when we tried to quickly turn it stern to so we could scramble aboard, some big waves caught the bow, brought the bow around and trapped all three of us between the 4,000 lb. hulk and the shore.

Since we had just under 235 years of diminished capacity between the three of us we were in peril. Three or four Mexican fishermen saw our problem, leaped in to hold the boat off, pull us out from under and away from danger. They got the bow out, we scampered aboard, and waving thanks, shoved off, bleeding, bruised but stubborn about our purpose.

The weather got worse, the beer was cold, we stopped all the bleeding and b-tching, caught some sierra and a small dorado, slammed the boat back up high and dry on the sand about noon.

I was the only one without a scratch so to celebrate I took my wife out to a rare dinner for two at a new local restaurant. It’s a specialty place some of you might know – Michoacano – carnitas and more carnitas; best in the world. The place was empty as we knew it would be well before Mexican dinner time. It was stifling hot with the sun in our eyes. They had hired a band – three young men in cowboy hats sang and played guitar near the usual speakers the size of SUVs. The music was unbelievably loud, assaulted and stung the senses.

The frijole soup was boiling hot and spicy, the carnitas were crisp, the salsas blistered the tongue. Everything about the experience cried out “Wake up. Wake up, old man. Do you even know where you are? You are in Mexico, you old fool.”

The perfect end to a near perfect day (needed more and bigger dorado).

michoacan carnitas are awesome......first and last place we eat when we come to baja, barajas in todos santos is right there too....then theres always tacos de corizon, de la vaca en amorado.....bad spanish but i love the concept.

Pack, mine is in La Ribera. It's a franchise -- they're all over.

Osprey, My beautiful wife and I just returned to our home in Buena Vista, its so good to be home. Where in La Ribera is Michoacano?

Pilot, I'll try again. My first reply disappeared. The restaurant is just past the Pemex on the Cabo Pulmo highway on the same side of the street. Used to be called Alcatraz, open now weekends only til Dec something.

Sounds like a typical day in baja! "Good judgement comes from experience. unfortunately most experiences come from bad judgement" - live and learn -shake hands with new friend and always have a beer and a good meal at the end of the day to put everything into perspective....
