Returned Wednesday from my annual week of Biology Field Lab with my students at Bahia de Los Angeles. The road conditions were very good and traffic
was light. We went down on Thursday and returned Wednesday and only saw a few vehicles with US plates. We stopped for gas, diesel, and bathroom breaks
in Maneadero, San Quintin, El Rosario, and Catavina. All attendants said there wasn?t much tourist traffic. The pump in Catavina was closed. Alphonso
was selling gas on the other side of the road, no diesel. Alfredo Diaz had gas and diesel in Bahia.
We stayed at Camp Gecko. There was a gentle breeze every day, enough to keep it from being too hot. When the breeze died in the evening, we had a
small campfire for atmosphere, not for warmth. There were four other sites occupied when we arrived, two when we left. The kids fished from the shore
and caught bass and trigger fish. It was our best year for shore fishing in the last 11.
I was pleased by the good surface on the road from town toward La Gringa that ended between Daggett?s and Raquel & Larry?s. We visited with Betty at
the Turtle Research Center, Antonio was in town when we arrived. The news about continued poaching and declining counts is discouraging.
Phone & internet service at the internet caf? was good, we didn?t try the new pay phone at Guillermo?s.
The border wait was 15 minutes at 6 pm Wednesday. One driver was asked to show her driver?s license, the other two were not asked for any ID.
17 more kids are now ready for additional Baja adventures.

A reporter and photographer from the Orange County Register is along to do a story.
Marv produces the big, beautiful Baja Calendar to raise funds to help make sure all students can attend the lab.

Sacramento City College is now also offering a 3.5 credit weeklong Biology course in Bahia de los Angeles copied from yours. The 18 slots filled up
immediately. It costs about $830.00. Sounds like fun.

I like the $830 part. My students pay $275. I suspect a big part of the difference is that during the summer, the teaching contract is extra, this is
part of my teaching load. It is also the best part of my teaching load.

Dug you said the turtle counts were declinig. How bad is it from the previous 5 years and were is most of the poaching happening ?...Thanks Paul
