yes you can get insurance at the border.you can get to san felipe from san luis, are you starting from yuma or some where else because it would be better to cross at mexicali and go south on mex 5 to san felipe

BC2 to BC3 to BC4 takes you to Mex.5 (a big short cut from going to Mexicali if you are in Yuma/ San Liis R.C.

AAA Map is really handy to have!

thanks david
I have friends that are in Yuma right now. I told them to cross there so they would miss the mess in Mexicali. I will rellay the message.

Okay, but just to be safe... keep reading Nomad for other thoughts on the route, I just looked at the map and only have used BC-4 to get to El Golfo from Hwy. 5.

A lot of Nomads live in the Yuma area, so I hope they confirm the back road highway names to use!

Welcome to Nomad!

The fastest route from Yuma is to cross at Algodones and take hwy 6 south to Mex 2 west to the new toll road that intersects Mex 5 south. We are doing this trip in reverse on Tuesday.

I live in San Luis, so Algodones is out of the way for me. After crossing, you can no longer take a left on Obregon (main drag) so go straight 3 blocks, then left, then a right on 2nd St. This is the way to El Golfo and will put you on Sonora 40. Then right (west) on BCN 4 to Mex 5. You can't make a left (south) there, so turn right (north) toward Mexicali about 50 yds. to a turnaround.

You can get insurance at Russ Jones' place on Main St. in San Luis, but I prefer Lewis and Lewis if there's time to get it by mail.

The easiest route (very few towns) is to cross at San Luis, then take Mex 2 to the new Mexicali bypass then 5 south. Not the very shortest, but all fast roads.

Cross at San Luis, keep in the right hand no-declare lane. At the first lights (almost immediately), turn right. You're now on Mex 2 towards Mexicali and Tijuana. Watch out for some speed bumps in the next mile or so.

In a few miles, there's a toll bridge. 12 pesos (for a car). There's some construction right after that, then it becomes a fast 4-lane divided highway. Continue for half an hour or so until you get to the big signs for "Tijuana / San Felipe (cuota)", which is the toll bypass. Bear right for that (don't take Mexicali centro), and continue to the Hwy 5 San Felipe junction (about 10 minutes). There's a toll on leaving (14 pesos for a car).

When you get through the toll, you want to go left (south), but can't, so turn right and immediately go to the center divide and do a u-turn. This will take you under the bypass.

You're now on highway 5 towards San Felipe, no more junctions, about 1 hr 40 or less from there at reasonable speeds. There's two gas stations on the right hand side (one soon, one in about 10 mins) if you need to top up or restrooms before the long empty stretch.

I get from the south side of Yuma to the north side of San Felipe in under three hours with this route, about 166 miles. There are other shorter routes, but they involve more junctions, more towns, etc, - this route is easy and a steady speed.
