D.E.P. Kicky

Paulina - 10-30-2008 at 03:06 PM

Our beloved pet scorpion "Kicky" died. We found her in Bahia almost 7 years ago in a garage in Camp Gecko. We couldn't bring ourselves to smash her, so we put her in Cody's bug catcher to observe for what was supposed to be only a day or two, but we ended up taking her home with us instead. She lived with us in a killer huge scorpion condo with fresh Bahia sand/dirt up until a week ago. We're bummed she's gone. We need a new Baja pet. (Dern says no dogs).

Kicky in her fat and happy days:

Does anyone know how to mold her into a belt buckle?

Que puedo decir

Vaya a Cielo "Kicky". 7 years must be a long life for a scorpion.
Unique chose of pet! We have several at Rancho Tortuga, but they are "free range scorpions". Again sorry for your loss.
Saludos, Tortuga:(

If only I'd known

MrBillM - 10-30-2008 at 04:24 PM

I squashed one about twice that big two days ago.

I could have saved it for you.

Should I save the next one ?

Natalie Ann - 10-30-2008 at 04:38 PM

My sympathies, Paulina, on your loss of Kicky.

About the belt buckle.... I have a scorpion embedded in lucite made into a bracelet (it's a baby scorpion). Perhaps that's the way to go to preserve Kicky for a real nice belt buckle.

I am very sorry for your loss but you must tell me the benefit of having a scorpion as a pet. What did you find loving about this lobsterlike terrestria arachnid? Did it scare away unwanted guests? Did it retrieve your slippers or the morning paper? Would it roll over on command or play dead? I don't think so.

I find this little creature about as much fun as a cat but who am I to say what brings you joy.

I suggest you have this little guy cremated and it's ashes placed above your fireplace mantel so you can always visit and talk to him as if he were actually alive.

To fill the void in your lives I think that a stink bug or one of the more elusive 'Baja Fly's" is just what you need now.

Just remember this little guy is in God's hands now preying upon unsuspecting insects in the garden.........

Love the belt buckle idea. I'm sure Kicky would have loved it too. :)

It is really great to discover that there are some very fine practitioners of the arts of satire and sarcasm selflessly devoting themselves to the commenting on interesting trivia in our small circle of Amigos.

And, without any monetary compensation, whatsoever!

Saludos!

My sincere sympathies. What suggestions do Nomads who care have for a suitable Baja replacement pet? I see nominations for a stinkbug and a bajafly thus far.

What physical characteristics provide gender differentation in scorpions?

I can feel the love just ooozing out all over the place. That's what keeps bringing me back. Kicky was cool. We could have smashed her like most people do, but didn't. She had a safe home, food always available, water, a super cool hide out log, and yes, she did scare some unwanted guests away, specially when Dern would pet her back.

We lived full time in Baja when we found her and she used to keep us awake at night kicking sand around her science habitat, until we bought her a larger home. Thus her name, "Kicky".

She also glowed in the dark. How many cats can do that?(naturally without spray paint)

There's really no need to take suggestions for a suitable replacement as Bill has offered to start a collection for us. Thanks Bill.

Regarding LL's suggestion to have this little guy cremated and it's ashes placed above our fireplace mantel so we can always visit and talk to (him) as if (he) were actually alive, No. As I stated, we are thinking belt buckle, or maybe taking up Natalie Ann's suggestion.

In the mean time, LL and others, you may be interested to know that Kicky has her place on our year round Dia de Los Muertos table. She is in good company; most of Dern's dad Joe is on the right. On the left, starting at the bottom is Charlie the Bulldog, then Cora in the heart shaped box, (you can see her photo running on the beach) Tucked behind Cora's box is a baggie of Brodie, the local bar dog who's ashes were shared among friends. My best friend Denise is the mermaid and Kicky is in the Pyrex dish.

A close up of Kicky along with an Indian bead I found on a trail this morning.

She's in good hands, as LL sorta suggested. Although I don't think they eat each other on the other side of the rainbow...

Why thank you Gypsy! I'm glad you enjoyed my humorlessness post.

I have a lot of time on my hands now being on disability with my carpal tunnel issues. It all started when my my left forearm hurt from using the shovel to dispose of my 75 pound dogs "gifts" he left for me in my now destroyed backyard grass.

To be honest a scorpion would be a lot easier on these tired bones to clean up after.

Where can I get one of these lovely creatures?

Paulina,

As you know I am just kidding as I have nothing else to do tonight. Your tribute to your pets is outstanding! I had a goldfish when I was a kid and when he passed my mom took ol' goldie to the bathroom with me in tow and she told me to say goodbye to him then she flushed. I cried like I lost my best friend.

it's not the animal but the spirt that we connect to as humans.

I am really sorry for the loss of your pet.

I can relate to the loss of Kicky. I too lost a scorpion, although it wasn't a pet. It was on a skewer and just as I was taking a bite it fell to the ground. Fortunately I had more than one. They don't taste anything like chicken.

As for the pet goldfish, I have even more sorrowful memories. I lost my beloved goldfish that I won out at the carnival when just a tyke. I can still remember talking to the neighbor while digging the hole to bury 'Sparkly'.

My neighbor remarked that the 3' deep hole was pretty deep to bury a small goldfish in. I agreed and kept digging.

In a bit he chirped in again, "Don't you think that's deep enough for a goldfish?"

I told him, "It would be except my goldfish is inside your cat."

None of the above is true. No animals were hurt in the telling of these lies.

I'm sorry... but that was funny!

LOSARIPES - 10-31-2008 at 02:55 AM

Well, I am sorry for your lose, but losing one scorpion may not be as bad as "finding" one... when and where you don't want to.
I try to stay away from them

Barbareno - 10-31-2008 at 05:43 AM

Paulina I to am sorry for your loss. I can't help you with the belt buckle.

A thought just came to me tho. A jewellery maker may be able to help you. That would look stunning as a necklace.

I am partial to scorpians as I am one.

Barb

jorgie - 10-31-2008 at 05:50 AM

what did you feed it over seven years ??

shari - 10-31-2008 at 07:22 AM

Ah, what a thread...lo siento amiga for your little buddy....but how wonderful to imortalize her....the other day a friend of our showed me his departed pet scorpion and what he did was he dipped it in laquer or maybe it was varnish and it was very lifelike and beautiful...could be a great joke piece...you know, scare your guests etc...

Paulina - 10-31-2008 at 07:32 AM

Thanks guys.

Barb, I'm a scorpio as well. Maybe that's why we had such a bond with Kicky ;)

jorgie, we fed her crickets, meal worms, flies, moths and always had a bottle cap of fresh water in there too.

Shari, we might go the laquer or varnish dipping route, thanks.

Kids in Tijuana used to peddle them imbedded in amber. Made for a good conversation piece for people of the north country.
They were rather attractive also.

I once talked with surfers south of San Quintin who, when the water was flat, kicked rocks looking for scorpions...they then mixed up fiberglass resin and cut a Tecate can to make a shallow cup....plunked the critter in the can, and poured the resin in.

It made a clear "puck" that was suitable for adorning any part of your house, trailer, tent, table,,,,,

As for the "amber", true amber is fairly rare and is petrified sap/resin.....MANY folks will buy fake amber (ie. plastic ) thinking it is the real stuff:light::light:

lizard lips - 10-31-2008 at 10:22 AM

I bought some amber in Chiapas not long ago and was told that if you light a match to it true amber won't melt.

toneart - 10-31-2008 at 10:23 AM

A few years back when I was working on my social skills, I bought two exotic, Chinese goldfish. You know. The kind that waddles when they swim.

They are fun to watch as they get older. They are such gluttons that they overeat and fill up with air or gas or maybe both. Anyway, the eventually turn belly up, but still alive. They can live for months or even years that way, swimming upside down.

Better than TV! :o
