I was told by people in the know that that's an Appaloosa.

Cypress - 10-31-2008 at 12:41 PM

Pompano, Thanks! Have you got anymore of those foggy pictures?

Pompano - 10-31-2008 at 01:14 PM

Yes, Igor...some of those spotted horses are indeed Appaloosas. Just like the ones I grew up with, along with quarterhorses, some Indian Painted also...2 Clydesdales named Tom and Mix, and a drop-dead gorgeous Morgan who broke my foot when I was 10.

I have already petitioned the Wyoming State Dept. on changing 'Spotted Horse' to 'Applaloosa.':)

Incredible photos...

The foal look like a paint while the older could indeed be an Appaloosa...

Thanks for sharing...

Very pretty pictures, Pompano. Is Beartooth Pass near Absarokee in Montana?

You had a bunch of nice shots.. But, Im curious. What kind of boat was this taken from? It looks like a small trimaran?

Yes, indeed, Paula..very close to Absarokee by Montana distances. The Beartooth Highway originates in Red Lodge, Montana and the Pass is about 65 miles south of Absarokee. Take Hwy 78 through wide spots Roscoe and Luther to Hwy 212 and then south through Red Lodge to the Wyoming Border. About 30 miles south of Red Lodge you will climb almost 11,000 ft to the highest point on Beartooth Pass.

.
Some interesting tidbits about the Beartooth Mountains. They are named after a narrow pyramidal spire you easily spot in the clear blue sky. This is the Bear's Tooth - Na Pet Say in the language of the local Crow Indians - from which the mountains take their name.

Beartooth Highway opened in 1936 along an old hunter's route, a fellow named Geer who guided Civil War veteran General Sherman on this 'shortcut' from Yellowstone to Billings, Mt. Designated a National Scenic Byway in 1989, the Beartooth has been blessed as"America's most beautiful road" by no less an expert than Charles Kuralt. I know of one or two others I might give that title to, but agree that this is one drive you will never forget. Bighorn sheep and mountain goats are around, so look sharp and bring your binocs and telephoto lens. Many years ago, my folks had a remote cabin a few miles out of Cooke City, which is the end of the road for Beartooth Highway and one of the entrances to Yellowstone Park. I have taken this rather hard, but beautiful route many, many times...just great rugged western scenery. Towing a boat to Baja, I was once snowbound in the pass...it was August.

"I took the road less traveled by, and that has
made all the difference." -(Robert Frost) The Road Not Taken

Mango...yes, that is a trimaran. The Christina sailed by an Irishman, Barry and his Swiss bride, Carrine.

Interesting anecdote about this delightful Swiss Miss. We were having another late night poker game and Barry had come ashore to play..bringing his lovely 'Karen' along to kibitz. After watching a while, Karen asked if she could play, too. We readily agreed, thinking to fleece her soundly. Instead, she won almost every pot and rowed back out to the boat very happy that night.

The next morning I overheard this radio conversation she had with another sailboat in our anchorage.

"I had so much fun last night at Roger's. The guys there taught me a game called Poke-um."

Roger, for all of the remote Montana roads I've driven just for the the joy of it, this one was Always a little too far out of the way. But I'm putting it on my list of things to do next summer thanks to your intriguing trivia about this highway.

And for your superior knowledge of my (almost) home state, I'm recognizing that North Dakotans may be smarter than Montanans, and giving you free pass on Montana jokes for one full week;)

Okay, thanks Paula...here's an oldie, but a goodie.

MONTANA GRIZZLY BEAR NOTICE:
In light of the rising frequency of human/grizzly bear conflicts, the Montana Department of Fish and Game is advising hikers, hunters, and fishermen to take extra precautions and keep alert for bears while in the field.

We advise that outdoorsmen wear noisy little bells on their clothing so as not to startle bears that aren't expecting them. We also advise outdoorsmen to carry pepper spray with them in case of an encounter with a bear.

It is also a good idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear activity. Outdoorsmen should recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear poop.

Black bear poop contains lots of berries and squirrel fur.

Grizzly bear poop has little bells in it and smells like pepper.
