how to discourage bats?

rhintransit - 11-8-2008 at 10:24 AM

love the critters, they are wonderful, great insect control, but one or two has/have taken to hanging and eating in one particularly inconvenient spot in my palapa. he/she/they have messy droppings and eating habits. I'd like to encourage them to hang around my place, but somewhere else. any suggestions???

Osprey - 11-8-2008 at 10:53 AM

Hang a little piece of pitahaya cactus near the place where they nest. They will not come near that nesting site again.

Packoderm - 11-8-2008 at 10:57 AM

Ceiling fan?

toneart - 11-8-2008 at 10:58 AM

Cats and a catwalk infrastructure near the ceiling?
No? well then Osprey's suggestion would probably be the best solution.

How did you come up with this solution? There has to be a story.

you must permanently seal off all bat entry points
you must break the path of entry

there is NOTHING made that will keep bats away:light:

don't waste your time with "fruits":spingrin:

Bats

tehag - 11-8-2008 at 12:33 PM

Inspection may reveal that much of that mess where they have eaten consists of c-ckroach parts. Small price for the service, IMO.

LB - 11-8-2008 at 12:37 PM

We have taken branches for a thorny tree and attached them to the dark corners where they like to rest. It worked. Taught this by a local Mexicano. For
the birds in our palapa we attached bird netting to keep the birds from getting in and nesting this would work for bats also.

c-ckroach parts...what do they taste like???:O

a tennis racket would be an option....

Bat roosting deterrent

Marla Daily - 11-8-2008 at 04:38 PM

Bat biologist, Pat Brown, taught us to hang pieces of lightweight plastic netting, such as cut up pieces of sun-cloth, over bat entry spaces on vertical surfaces, and to
staple or attach the pieces only along at the top, leaving the netting hanging down. That way when the bats leave at dusk, they drop down and exit safely, but they cannot re-enter, for they won't crawl up under the netting. We used it on a board and bat house and it worked like a charm. (Is that why they are called bats??)

Vince - 11-8-2008 at 04:56 PM

I have used the cactus method (a favorite of the locals) on Coyote Bay, but I found that hanging vertical pieces of fishline about 2 feet long all over the porch keeps about 80 % of them away. They don't like to fly around the fine fishline. Keep it just above the head level so it won't spook you at night.

Pompano - 11-8-2008 at 06:17 PM

Hi Vince...you, Enrique, Stan, NOLS, and I show good results with the cactus methods. Sometimes the problem is not outside, however.

Once a bat got inside the house and was hanging on the kitchen wall...right above the chef's head. I knew it had happened from the intensity of the screaming...I heard it clear down at Bean Rocks while at work getting our dinner.

I got out the paint sprayer and encased that sucker in white paint and covered the bat spots at the same time. Clever, no?

Another time a huge wolf spider and a bat were crawling, jumping and flitting around the house at the same time....but that story is for a different time and involves nudity, shouts, broomsticks, and alarmed neighbors.

Bat Bites

MrBillM - 11-9-2008 at 12:44 AM

Having lived in the Low and High desert for almost Forty years, I've been buzzed by the damn things too many times and I HATE them.

A short while back in the states, I once again had to chase two bats out of the house and my wife chided me for being so concerned.

Two days later, the local paper had a short story regarding a rabid bat bite. The story noted that there hadn't been a rabid dog bite recorded in San Bernardino county since 1948 and a rabid cat bite for almost as long, but every year there have been rabid bat bites recorded. Last year there had been eight and three so far this year.

Still long odds, BUT...............

I'd rather deal with the c-ckroaches.

That's the old Bill.
Anything to be controversial.:no::no::biggrin:

Vaccinations

MrBillM - 11-10-2008 at 07:20 PM

You know, I asked my local Vet much the same question early this spring when their marquee out front advertised "Rattlesnake Vaccine shots".

I asked the clerk if many people were bringing in their Rattlesnakes.

I hadn't been the first to ask.
