From the border to El Rosario (almost)!

Yes, the Mexicans changed the spelling from San Quentin to San Quintin and from (Cape) Colnett to Colonet... Tia Juana to Tijuana.

The Hamilton Ranch was on the east side of Colonia Guerrero... not near the ocean as the map shows.

Of interest some of the railroad line from the Old Mill is shown...

Yah, the San Quintin/ San Quentin thing is a little odd, I have seen it spelled the current way on old maps, so it may be a mistake on the auto club's part... Colnett was a sea captain, and yes that was changed by locals... and you know how Aunt Jane 'Tia Juana' morphed into today's Tijuana!

Hi Barry,

Yes, the adobe ruins have been stabilized and worth a visit... less than 5 miles from Hwy. 1 on a wide graded road... See our photos following a visit with the Humfreville's at their L.A. Bay home in Oct., 2005: http://vivabaja.com/1005/

Not quite, what was known as Tia Juana was actualy in California, norh side of the Tijuana River in what is now San Ysidro.

David K - 11-12-2008 at 10:14 AM

Where did the word Tijuana come from if not from Tia Juana?

fdt - 11-12-2008 at 10:42 AM

The most accepted theory, according to historians is from the kumiai Ticuan or Llanticuan that makes reference to the mountain to the east of the city known as Cerro Colorado and that in theire native tounge meant turtle laying down. Reference to this can be foud at the Mision de San Diego de Alcala archives from the first baptism records. Tia Juana was the name of the southern most town in California (San Ysidro) and what is now Tijuana was known as Rancho Tijuana.

Oh, and the Tia Juana theory (never prooven) was that an old lady named Juana had a restaurant were travelers would stop and have a good homemade meal. No proof has ever come from that theory, maybe the first priests at San Diego called it that because it was easier to understand? No one knows.

Thanks Ferna...

Thank you for the maps.

I was curious looking at the Auto Club map and decided to find and drive the old road from San Quintin to Colonet. I talked to some of my neighbors in the area who had grown up there and were familiar with the old road. One offered to be my guide a few days ago and we spent several hours tracing its path. A few parts of the old road are no longer passable but for the most part you can still make the trip with a few detours. Hamilton Ranch and Johnson Ranch were both located east from the old "highway" but there were popular stops along the road that carried their names where one could get gas, food and lodging. The Hamilton ranch is still in operation. Here are some photos I took...
