Whale watching?

jureal - 11-15-2008 at 11:04 PM

What is the chance of whales being in Scammons during Christmas break this year. I would like to take the kids during their vacation.

Based upon past experience, I'd think many would be there by then.

Years ago we went that early and saw whales, but they were not a close as later. Last year there were some articles about them arriving later and staying later, but go for it.

Before we left Bahia Asuncion we saw some arriving in that area. They are not as close, but it is fun to see them swim past our front porch.

Good luck, and have a great time. We plan on going a few times this year---everytime is different.

looks like the gray whales are migrating early this year as several have been spotted by southbound sailboats and we've seen a few here too and it is very very early. Ojo de Liebre is lovely at christmas time and there are usually a few whales to be seen there...you may get lucky and see a birth...or lots of very fat pregnant mamas waiting to have their calves. Have a great visit there.

Thanks everyone. I thought that it may be a bit early but might be worthwhile to chance it. Now I have to get passports for the kids.

When do you think is the very best time? We want to go this year and park at Scammons in our motorhome

From past experience I would have to say the month of February.

shari - 11-17-2008 at 10:54 AM

yes all of february is great but the first week of march is my favorite as the calves are getting older and more adventurous and the moms are getting ready to leave...they get really mushy the last few days in the lagoon and we have had our most memorable experiences with the older calves the first couple weeks of march...plus the crowds have thinned out...although its pretty quiet and will be even quieter this year most likely...the only time to avoid the lagoon is presidents day weekend when it is a zoo.
I will be organizing the annual Nomad Whale Extravaganza the first few days of march...I try to spend my birthday there every year in case you want to join us.

Shari, let me know more about your Extravaganza.

shari - 11-17-2008 at 11:30 AM

stay tuned to Nomad Forum...we will be organizing this annual event in the new year...sounds like you're in!

that sounds like a fun group event. looking forward to seeing all about it.

BBP raid on SLI is mar 19-22 this year.

Thanks Shari, I'm sure we will be if we're not still in the states. Will be going to Quartzite to meet friends in Jan, hoping to bring them back with us for whale watching.
