Just a reminder

jrbaja - 5-20-2004 at 08:47 PM

I will be making another trip south around the 24th of this month. We already have a lot of donations but this time we are taking a truck and towing a trailer as we have bicycles and larger items to transport.
If anyone is interested in contributing goods or supplies to the more remote communities please let me know and we will get it there.
For the new guys, this has been an ongoing project and has been greatly appreciated by many of the communities that don't attract tourism. Thus, the more need they have.
Here is the list of the most asked for and important items.
School Supplies
Seeds
Safety Goggles
Basic First Aid Items
Tarps
Shoes
Clothing
Blankets

And the reason this all started, Baseball Equipment. I don't know if any of you remember, but I started this donation thing because upon arriving in Mission San Luis Gonzaga, all the kids were playing baseball and had 2 or 3 gloves, a couple bats and balls.
Well, a whole lot of you stepped up and got the things I asked for. Well, when I was in San Luis a couple weeks ago, the San Luis Gonzaga Cholleros took the championship in Ciudad Constitucion.
This means a big thanks came from the Cholleros to everyone who helped. And, a whole bunch of happy players and community.
Now, for those of you who didn't contribute. Don't you think it's a little unfair for the Cholleros to have much better equipment than the other teams?
Well, don't you ?
OK then, I am still visiting all the communities regularly. And these guys don't have much of anything school and sports wise. How long ya gonna hang onto that old bat or glove anyways?
There we have it. Thanks to everyone who continue to help with this program and to those who may in the future.
And for those of you who can't, please take something down when you go. It does nothing but help other human beings as we all should.

nice of you to want to help out, but I was just wondering if there are any in your own community who are also in need.....

Yes there are

jrbaja - 5-21-2004 at 07:44 AM

In fact, just about all the communities down here can use help and donations. (medical and school supplies).
But because of my travels in the back country here, I am concentrating on helping the people who don't benefit from tourism. Most all the other areas have contact with the outside world and benefit from this.
I am just making sure that the more remote areas benefit as well. Since I am there anyways.
And besides, the foods better in the mountains!

tim40 - 5-21-2004 at 08:56 AM

My family and I make several trips a year to some of the more remote locations in Baja. We save all of our sporting equipment and numerous donations from friends and friends of friends. Came to a like observation of the need when visiting the school at San Javier many years ago.

You are doing a great thing. Thank you

jrbaja - 5-21-2004 at 08:57 AM

Here's a point to ponder

Why is it that the people that have the least, donate the most ?
Ejemplo- Most of my friends are Mexicans. Most of them don't have any money although some do but probably not compared to the vast fortunes most of you are accumulating.
All of them donate blankets and clothes in spite of my questioning them about it.
Their reply is " they need it more than we do because it's much colder in the mountains".
They have never met any of these people before. They are just Human.
Last year when I took all the repellants down after the hurricanes I stopped in the mountains first. These people said that the beach communities needed the repellants more than they did because
1. The Dengue was worse at the playas and
2. We are much healthier than those that live down there.
The latter I cracked up at. It is true. But there's a good blend in there somewhere. Those guys in the mountains could care less about going to the beach and vice versa.
The wonderful thing about it is that in spite of having no money and never having met each other, they are both willing to help each other in any way they can.
Is this where we as americans went wrong ?

David K - 5-21-2004 at 09:21 AM

jr, I have a bunch of shirts (L) and other mens clothes and will bring them by on my next visit.
Just a note on your anti-American comment. America is known as the most generous nation on Earth. You must have hung around some lousy people when you lived here? I would also guess that most who read your comments would try to do the same as you to help the great Baja people. Many do and don't brag about it, too. Remember, you are an American too (and not the only one who has compassion). Check out the Flying Samaritans... Capt. Mike can give you some insight on them.

Hot Pastrami at Dave's Nueva York Deli afterwards?

Anti american

jrbaja - 5-21-2004 at 09:35 AM

OK, here we go again. I had to re read everything I wrote to see what I said this time that was anti american. This is all I could come up with. "Is this where we as americans went wrong ? "
To ignore is a major part of ignorance!

Yep, J.R. When you've got your hand out, positivity is a must!

Stephanie Jackter - 5-21-2004 at 11:53 AM

Most everybody on this board participates in one way or another to giving back to the people of Mexico. Just try not to stick your thumb up their noses while asking. It's the ol' "catch flies with honey" thing, which, frankly, neither you or I have mastered extremely well. - Stephanie

My hand out

jrbaja - 5-21-2004 at 12:13 PM

That's pretty funny Steph. . All this does for me is cost extra money in gas. I'm going there anyway.
If people refuse to listen to my opinions, call me anti american because of them, and want to take it out on the Mexican people, that doesn't surprise me.
On the other hand, there are many on here that support me and what I am doing, whether they have the same beliefs as me or not. You, I am sure would be surprised at the numbers.
I am not a phony kind of person. I say what's on my mind always. Sometimes that get's me in trouble but I can't seem to bring myself to bedo nalgas.
I believe in what I do and say and so far, when dealing with real humans, this has worked out well. Wonder why???:light:

jrbaja. I would like to become an elf and help

RandyMacSC/SO - 5-21-2004 at 02:38 PM

The value of a positive uplifting press release.

It is said that , Giving is never about competition for the hearts and minds of people, it's about lifting the spirits of those in need and not losing sight of that.

The lead in to the first post captures attention, but the later posts can be a big turn off. I have learned to read everything first then see what and where I can best be of help. I won't contribute if it gets negative, just to the positive. Being positive makes things flow easier.

I'm way up in Canada and read this most recent posting and believe it may get lost in amongst the many posts, so I posted a PR DRIVE notice to help you jrbaja, so that may capture the attention of more Baja Elves in a way that draws people to your journey of hope and smiles of joy.

I always fill my motorhome with items to take south to needy places in Mexico and recently the Baja and since I wouldn't be able to get the many items that I have gathered over the past 10 months to you in time for May 24th, I thought I could contribute in other ways to help make your important Papa Noel sleigh journey south the huge success that you hope for.

I have many years experience at marcom or marketing communications and PR (writing press releases for many reasons including the all important drives to gather up items for the needy ) and thought I would waste no time to post a positive call for help that clarifies your mission and the need and the rewards and benefits of contributing items.

I will add some photos that capture the joy that those needy items can bring to remote communities, and encourage others to do so, as people like to see smiles and joy. I warms the heart to the possibilities, and I do believe that it can be the 'motivation' that you seek to get people off the sofas to do some quick Spring Cleaning so they can also help contribute. Be an elf, just like the big elf on Papa Noel's campus.

You have a big heart jrbaja and I hope I can help with the communication of your message for May 24 and other drives.

See Today's posts.
jr's Baja Smiles Notice May 21, 2004 - Spring Baja Drive of Joy & Smiles May 24th

I'm only trying to help you and it's the Same message you are trying to get across jrbaja, just a little different style of delivery.

You won't be able to miss it.

Thanks Randy

jrbaja - 5-21-2004 at 03:30 PM

I about fell off the chair when I saw it. hahahahahaha. You are good.
I didn't really expect too much to happen before leaving this trip but with your help, who knows.
I have a bunch of people down here that donate and it is an ongoing project.
We will only be down there for about a week this time and then spending a couple months up here. But, as soon as I go back down again, the project resumes.
I would also like to hook you up with an orphanage/school in Maneadero. These people are incredible and care about everyone. Agua Viva is the name and I will see if I can get you some more info. on them. Incrediblw what they are doing to help these people.
Thanks again for your help Amigo and looking forward to those cold ones here in Baja.

Would definitely like to help my big hearted but sometimes cantankerous amigo...

RandyMacSC/SO - 5-21-2004 at 03:42 PM

I look forward to a few cold ones when I come south. Whereever my talents can best contribute I'll be there when I can to help.

I'm a firm believer that the person who gives away all his toys to spread more joy before the grim reaper knocks, wins.

Take care jrbaja ( I have a cartoon idea for you and it's called the Baja's Loveable Grumplestiltskin.) but it might be weeks before I get to it.

Stuff to go

bajalou - 5-22-2004 at 03:53 PM

I'm over here on the east side, San Felipe but I can round up a bunch of clothes, shirts jackets, etc. I wear small/med so shouldn;t have a hard time finding someone they fit. Buttttttttttttt I don't know much about the frigid west coast - Ensenada-Rosarita etc. I'd be willing to bring some stuff over, probably Monday but where do I go???

Email me - bajalou@telnor.net and see if we can work something out

Human Beings

jrbaja - 5-23-2004 at 05:43 PM

are people that would drive all the way over to Rosarito from San Felipe to do nothing more than deliver goods to make people warm and smile. And thank you two so much for being who you are.
Keep exploring Amigos! And thank you very mucho.

Skeet/Loreto - 5-24-2004 at 02:58 AM

J. R.
I have several large suticases loaded with Clothes for the "Cold Kids" near Ciduad Constitution. Problem is getting them from Dos Palos to your location;Have made many requests for people coming from North of my area to pick up and deliver . Only have one person so far that will stop by and take to the Area.

I am involved in the "Mexican Minstrey" here in Dos Palos where we have more clothes than we can use. If you have contact with any of our "Northern Amigos" i can meet them on Hwy 5 or Hwy 99 anytime.
