Baja Nomad Dia de Reyes Toy Drive 2009

 Pages:  1    3

fdt - 11-19-2008 at 12:55 PM

Hi all;
This will be the third annual Dia de Reyes Toy Drive that is sponsored by Baja Nomads.
The first toy drive was in Tijuana at Lomas Taurinas were we had the oportunity to make 112 very needy children happy with gifts that if not for you would have received nada.
http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=21378#pid1972...

The secod one was held in Esteban Cantu, by Punta Banda in Ensenada were thanks to many of you and the nomad residents of that area was a big success and over 80 children had a great day.
http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=28406#pid2798...

Kids from the first toy drive had a sponsor for last year and that way we were able to do it in Esteban Cantu. The kids in Esteban Cantu now have a golf tournament that will be held in June.
http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=32970#pid3550...

For this comming Dia de Reyes we will be going back to the same area of Tijuana since the sponsors that took over those kids will not be able to take gifts.

Lomas Taurinas is one of the poorest areas of Tijuana (there are many) and we have to this date about 98 kids ranging from 5 to 14 yrs, boys and girls.
I understand that times are tough right now but I feel we must keep doing events like this were we can help the most needy, specialy the kids.
I'll have more details for you as to how many girs and boys of each age we have and I really hope you can find some toy or toys that will make them happy.

A drop of location has not been set up yet in the US side but I should know soon.

We do not request expensive toys and Black Friday is comming up so maybe good deals can be found and we also have the day after christmas were most toys go on sale.

I hope you can participate this year and maybe also join us on Dia de Reyes in Tijuana for the toy give away. You'll never forget it.

The date is Sunday January 04 2009, hope you can make it.

Saludos
Fernando y familia

Fernando, Simone and family....

I'm so pleased to know you'll be sponsoring this toy drive again and am wondering....

For those of us who will not be south before year's end, do you wish to accept cash donations and then do the shopping?

If not, do you have a stateside mailing address to receive small items? (Or is there a nomad who might be willing to receive and deliver my gift? If so, please send me a u2u.)

I know of bikes that have already been collected for this year's event.

Udo - 11-24-2008 at 09:17 PM

Fernando,
I just realized why the toy drive is on the 4th. of January...
When I lived in Venezuela, the 6th of January was a larger holiday than Christmas. It has something to do with Christ's birth, but I can't rememer.
All I remember was getting some presents on that day, in addition to Christmas.
Check your U2U, I have a personal question.

fdt - 11-26-2008 at 06:25 AM

First of all we would like to thank all of you that have offered to support us for the 2009 Baja Nomad Dia de Reyes Toy Drive.
We have a head count and as it stands right now it's as follows:

Children 5-6 yrs old ........... 8 boys, 10 girls

Children 7 yrs old . . . . .. .. .. 6 boys, 6 girls

Children 8-9 yrs old ............... 20 boys, 27 girls

Children 10 yrs old .......... 10 boys, 17 girls

Children 11-12 yrs old ........... 7 boys, 10 girls

Same as in prior years we would like to receive gifts for these children that are not to expensive and if they require batteries if you could please include them.
The good people at Jackson Hewitt Tax Services in Chula Vista have agreed to be drop off points for the toys or if you would like to mail or express toys to them, they will receive them. Here is theire location and phone number:
Miss Nidia Puerto is our main contact person.
JACKSON HEWITT
1655 Broadway,
Suite 10
Chula Vista, CA 91911
Phone number (619) 426-6516

Here comes the touchy part, this toy drive is not promoted so we can profit in any way from it and some have expressed that they would like to contribute in cash so we can purchase toys for them. Well we have received a few donations in the past years and they have come in handy and we thank you for that. I asked Simone to set up a Paypal acct for the 2009 drive and I'll let you know as soon as it is up.

I would also like to say that we can not do advertisements for gift sponsors or theire business or promise that we will take a lot of pictures as we (at least I ) will probably be bussy handing out gifts to be able to be also taking pictures. The idea is to make needy kids happy at least for Dia de Reyes.

Fernando Garcia and familia.

If there is some one - or some entity - that would like to take a (the?) prominent position in financial support of this event, I would personally see to it myself that they receive a CD containing photos - including any specifically requested ahead of time - from the event on Sunday, January 4th.

First Baja Nomad Toy Drive

fdt - 11-27-2008 at 08:15 PM

Ok everyone, this all started as an idea and you can read all about it in past posts but with all honesty, what made us strong was the vast, initial donation from Team Cabo Magic. We started out with 72 children and yes, they provided 72 + gifts, from toys to watches to jackets to beed necklasses, clothing and M&M candy and even some Cabo Magic t-shirts. That made it posible for us to be able to include the special needs children for a total of 122 kids. Here some of the boxeds full of Cabo Magic gifts for the kids. Tomy's mom and dad drove from the Palm Desert area to Chula Vista to deliver a truck load of gifts. Nuevamente gracias.

There were also other major contributors like Oso that provided us with dozens of Mickey's and Minnie's for the children.

And the bicicle stories, well those you can read about on your own.

Black Friday is today!

Second Baja Nomad Toy Drive

fdt - 11-28-2008 at 12:53 PM

This event was great, we had the opportunity to take gifts to children down south of Ensenada, Esteban Cantu area going to Punta Banda and the major support we received was from the Ensenada Nomads, specialy Bajabound 2005 and Bajamigo who helped us set it all up with the comunity down there and went out of theire way paying for the entire meal for everyone that attended the giveaway of toys at the India Bonita restaurant, Dennis, Sylens and many other Ensenada area Nomads helped a lot down there.

Again Thank You!

Mark was the major bicycle donor

Udo - 11-29-2008 at 11:23 AM

Fernando:
In regards to the toy drive, would you like the gifts wrapped or unwrapped.
Also, would you like the age group and gender of the gift?

Udo & Jana

fdt - 11-30-2008 at 03:49 PM

Thanks Udo, we would prefer them unwraped and if you can send us some gift wrap separate, that way Simone (she is in charge of sorting and wrapping) knows what toy goes for what child and so on.
As you can see we have over 120 chidren so the more gifts we can get the better.

DianaT - 12-1-2008 at 10:09 AM

Wrapping paper is always on sale right before and right after Christmas.

fdt - 12-1-2008 at 11:40 AM

Thanks everyone for all of your signs of support and willingness to help make this toy drive possible. In the past many have dropped off toys at the designated locations ad some have mailed them in also. We need a lot of help, there are over 120 children for this year plus the ones that show up on the day of the event that we didn't count on so I urge you to be generous. The economy as it is right now is not helping much but I know that somehow we'll do it.

We have spammed all of our email address book for NorCal and hope to get some big boxes packed up and sent your way....
Hopefully one of these years when our kids get a little older we can all pile in the car and make it down with you guys.
Our kids could learn alot from a trip like this....all of us could learn a little.
Keep up the good work, some people think some problems are too big to even try to tackle. It is people like you (and all of us together) that can make a difference!

fdt - 12-7-2008 at 06:04 PM

Thanks to all of you with the donations that make this possible.
The more toys, the better, we have over 120 kids this year and they will all receive gifts from Baja Nomads.

Bajafun777 - 12-8-2008 at 01:05 AM

Fdt, the Calexico motorcycle group I ride with to local events did the same thing you are doing for the Mexicali kids and this club raised enough for all the kids down there for X-Mas day. I will ask them if they would like to do it one more time to help you out. These guys are always doing something even in the other clubs they belong to just like some of us do to help the kids out. I will have my son that lives in San Diego drop somet hings off at the Tax Place you named on this site. I know that soccer balls are always a big smile maker as well as baseball gloves with balls and a bat. For the girls I have always sent dolls especially "Barbie." If there are other gifts that go over big let me know and I will pass it on. The other "what if question" is if the group wanted to ride down what would be the meet up time at the T.J. border crossing or U.S.A. side and group crossing be??? Not sure if they are willing to cross at this time or not but will ask, a lot of professinal guys and their wives ride together so safety to them always a must. Take care and I will get back to you on this. Later----bajafun777

fdt - 12-8-2008 at 10:17 AM

Thanks Bajafun, at this time I'm planning the itinerary for that day. The toy give away will probably be at about 1PM, I need to make sure with the people in charge of the kids. So with this in mind we will probably meet on the US side at about 9-9:30AM and come into México together on a bus, visit a couple of the city atractions and be at the give away location by 1 were we will also have tamales and rosca de reyes. Depending on the number of people that we have comming that day, will determine the transportation from the US and back to the US. Regardless, I will be getting a police escort so if the motorcycle club wants to come I would need to know how many bikes will be attending to have enough escort coverage.

BajaSedoso - 12-9-2008 at 09:46 PM

Got a few toys to drop off and will do so when I get to San Diego next weekend or the weekend after. Just to clarify, can they be dropped off at any of the Jackson Hewitt locations or just the one on Broadway?
Also, would you want used toys (as long as they are still in good condition)?

fdt - 12-10-2008 at 07:09 AM

They can be dropped of at any of the locations listed, just the one best for mailing or expressing is the
Jackson Hewitt,
in care of Toy Drive.

1655 Broadway, Suite 10
Chula Vista, CA 91911
in care of Toy Drive.

They are closed Sunday

if every unique visitor to BN would give $5 to the paypal account there would be ALOT of smiling kids on Jan 4. it's easy to do and it will make a kid happy, not to mention you should feel pretty good about it....

i used the paypal method just because i think Fernando and Simone would know better than i what would put a smile on a kids face....

toy delivery to jackson hewitt

fandango - 12-15-2008 at 01:47 PM

i will be making a toy delivery to the chula vista jackson hewitt this saturday, 20 december, for fdt's toy drive.
if anyone has toys or money that need to be delivered i can take them.
leaving the riverside area, south on the 215. i can detour on the 241 to orange county for a last minute pick up.
let me know.

fdt - 12-15-2008 at 01:54 PM

Thanks fandango, just remember Dec 20 is a saturday and they close at 2PM.
They are open Monday - Fridays 8AM to 5PM and Salturdays 10 -2PM.

fandango - 12-15-2008 at 02:03 PM

thanks for the info fdt. i was just calling them to confirm their hours.

WHY was this merged to this thread? more people would see it with its own title. now it is lost in the middle of this 3 page thread.
this is a FREE delivery, more toys may be donated without one having to deal with mailing or driving the toys down.

fdt - 12-15-2008 at 03:43 PM

The moderator probably merged it.

fdt - 12-15-2008 at 10:31 PM

We have adopted 121 children to give them toys on January 04:

Children 5-6 yrs old ........... 8 boys, 10 girls

Children 7 yrs old . . . . .. .. .. 6 boys, 6 girls

Children 8-9 yrs old ............... 20 boys, 27 girls

Children 10 yrs old .......... 10 boys, 17 girls

Children 11-12 yrs old ........... 7 boys, 10 girls.

Help!

If anyone is driving down to Baja and would like to meet for toy delivery, please let me know and we will meet with you.

Bajafun777 - 12-16-2008 at 07:27 PM

Fernando, my son should be dropping off 3 soccer balls and 3 dolls that have a backpack with a little puppy attached to each of the dolls. He will be dropping them off in Chula Vista. He got them today, as he called me while he was in the checkout line. I will keep after him if he did not take them by today. Later--------------------bajafun777

fdt - 12-16-2008 at 07:55 PM

Thanks bajafun. If we take the number of toys dropped off and the ones bajafun's son is delivering, we will be short only a mere 86 toys. Come on Baja Nomads, we can do it!

fdt - 12-17-2008 at 07:13 AM

Friday will be 1 month since we announced that the 3rd Annual Baja Nomad Dia de Reyes Toy Drive would be held on January 04, we have 121 children waiting on gifts for that day and I'm sure we will be able to come thru for them like in the past years. I understand that the current state of the economy is one of holding off on unnecesary purchases but I urgently implore that you send in your toy donations. Our bike donor has about 12 bikes for us, that leaves us with about 101 children in need of toys. Udo's donations had among clothing items 12 toys, leaving us needing 97 toys.
To this date 1 (one) person went Saturday to the drop off location to deliver toys. So as you can clearly see, we are still short here.
So, I urge you to help make this happen. The toy drive has your'e name on it.
There are less than 2 ½ weeks left.

fdt - 12-17-2008 at 09:08 AM

We received 7 toys more so we're only short like 90.

Where's the Nomad spirit of Santa???

C'mon friends - we certainly can't leave 90 children with rocks in their socks for Christmas.

Fernando and Simone and their children work very hard to create a bit of holiday happiness for these needy kids. One year little Sophia even donated her very own Christmas present - a brand new bike. That's no small donation for a little girl.

The spirit of Christmas lives in the act of giving. Perhaps each of us might give up just one personal Christmas gift.... tell our families that we'd rather donate that money towards a toy for a child who will otherwise get none.

Think about it, please. Paypal info is at the start of this post. It takes less than 5 minutes to make a donation. Fernando, Simone and the children will purchase and wrap a gift from you.

Happy Holidays to Everyone!

Barbara and I put a package in the mail to the address provided. Every little bit helps.

Thanks for taking this on!

John M

fdt - 12-17-2008 at 09:00 PM

John M: We received your package on Monday, thank you very much, we will be purchasing baseball bats and balls to go with the balls you sent and the knit gloves will be very welcome by the children as it seems that it will be a cold winter.

BajaNuts - 12-17-2008 at 09:44 PM

What would you prefer from a long-distance nomad?

I can put together a package or paypal..............what would do the most for the little ones?

I am more than happy to send a package for up to 20.

fdt - 12-17-2008 at 10:29 PM

We most definately prefer toys . If you can put together a package, great. Up to now the toys we have are for the smaller kids so if it's possible for you to get toys for the 9-12 year olds it would be great.

BAJACAT - 12-18-2008 at 12:45 AM

Ferna I will be making a bike delivery this saturday to your house, and don't worry I have a fealing everything is going to work out.

duke62 - 12-18-2008 at 12:56 AM

I want to contribute... No I need to... All Nomads do. I just need my wife to leave the room so she won't see me spending more money....

Ahem. Yes? Where were we?

Ah, yes.

p.s. Just got back in town, and, as I am still a newbie on this board, please don't reply with too much venom if I repeat things already said on this thread.

fdt, what is the drop dead date for delivering toys to the South Bay drop off address? Also, based on past experience, are there types of toys wanted/needed most?

Also, U2U me if you need help bringing things down. I live in East County, San Diego. It is about time some of us trolls crawled out from under the (internet) bridge and viewed the world.

Felizidades FDT, y muchas gracias. You put the X in X-Mas.

El Duque

fdt - 12-18-2008 at 09:56 AM

Our urgency in needing to receive toys as early as possible is that we still need to slowly bring them to México (smugle them across ;D )

The good people at Jackson Hewitt are open monday - friday 8-5 and saturday 10-2. Saturday January 03 would be the last day to drop off toys but we would really need to be sure you will be there if you plan on doing it the very last day as we would go up to Chula Vista and wait for you. If this is the case, that you wait till the last day, we would also request that you do it as early as posible, since Simone is in charge of sorting, assigning and wrapping the toys and we would need to know who is getting what.
We would greatly appreciate you dont wait till the end but if you really want to see me sweat, bite off what little is left of my fingernails and not sleep, go ahead wait till the 3rd:rolleyes:

Important:
Do not deliver toys to the other locations from Jan 02 on because we will not be able to get them on time. If you can, use only the 1655 Broadway, suite 10, Chula Vista location.

Udo - 12-18-2008 at 10:52 AM

Fernando...
I hope you and Simone have some help in doing all this. It is an extreme amount of effort on the two of you. I know that more than likely many members are waiting until the after Christmas sales, but that is cutting it a bit too close.
If we don't get snowed under, again I'll try to come down to help you and Simone, (right now we have almost 4' of snow in our yard, I'll post some photos later on another thread), and all of our roads are closed to uphill traffic.

fdt - 12-18-2008 at 12:16 PM

Thanks Udo, Fernando jr, Danielle and Sofia get to help to.
Waiting to get the after christmas sales is ok, as a matter of fact we encourage people take advantage of those sales. Waiting till January 3rd is what makes the nerves open up to the tequila appetite

BAJACAT - 12-18-2008 at 01:56 PM

Ferna this is the firts batch of bikes coming your way for the event, I will see you Saturday morning to deliver them to you..

Thanks BAJACAT.

fdt - 12-18-2008 at 09:26 PM

Something that would always be appreciated would be soccer balls #4 and #5, basketballs and volley balls, also inflating pumps and needles.

Bajafun777 - 12-19-2008 at 03:20 AM

Fernando, I checked with my son to see if he had delivered the toys yet and he said he did go by but the place was closed and he said open only on certain days in Chula Vista. He will go by tomorrow again as he said that this is one of the days they have listed to be open. He said maybe some kind of mixup on days open is causing some people not being able to deliver. I had told him the two addresses listed on the forum on 3rd in Chula Vista. Hope they are open tomorrow so he can get them off to where they need to go. He lives in Otay Lakes, so it is not too far from him. Later========== bajafun777

fdt - 12-19-2008 at 02:18 PM

Thanks bajafun, I just found out that he other locations are only open once a week, the only one open daily is the 1655 Broadway, suite 10 Chula Vista CA 91911.
If anyone took toys to the other locations and found that they were closed, please reconsider and send them to the Chula Vista Jackson Hewitt.
Thank you and sorry for the confusion, I have edited the post with all the other locations.

BajaNuts - 12-19-2008 at 07:59 PM

well, sorry, fdt,
after about 4 hours over the last 2 days looking for soccer balls and lip gloss, and trying to purchase the same, and ship it to a different address, and trying to find a website that is actually running........ without paying $20 shipping for a $20 order.............I give up! I've NEVER had this much trouble trying to spend money!

I've made a deposit, use it for whatever you need. If I can get over to the DollarStore, I'll try to pick up some pretty things for girls. Will let you know in the next day or 2.

Thanks to everyone that has delivered toys, it's looking better now. We are still short so keep it up, we need to provide to all these kids and the ones that tag along with them.
Gracias

Ferna,
One dozen multicolored #5 soccer balls on the way. Complicated process but waded through it. They were only sold online but Wally World's "site to store" free shipping wasn't available on that item so never mind going there to pick them up. Instead I got them shipped to the Jackson Hewitt on Broadway under the name "Toydrive Jacksonhewitt" They say they will be delivered 12/24.

Great Oso, thanks a lot. Soccer balls, basket balls and volley bals are a great toy / gift for kids and they can use them for school and after school.

BajaNomad - 12-20-2008 at 04:02 PM

Fernando - please keep everyone advised of which age groups (and, if applicable, which genders) still need the most attention for gifts.

Everyone - I'm asking that you keep the needs Fernando notes for this event in mind as we get to the day AFTER Christmas this week, and looking for items that are 'on sale' (more so than currently) after x-mas day that will enable your $$$ to go much further in helping support this event. As FDT indicated, please act on this as soon as possible - as he still needs time to get these items from Chula Vista across the border.

I appreciate your consideration of the children this event benefits. With your support of this event, even a little bit goes a long way, and I appreciate your participation.

Regards,

"With mounds of inventory still left to sell, merchants are expected to deepen the discounts even more the day after Christmas."

Fernando, my son came down late last night and let me know that the soccer balls and dolls were left in Chula Vista location. Hope your number has been reached. I think I will be riding down with our motorcycle group to hand out toys on January 3rd in Mexicali to the kids in the shelter there. Take care amigo, and remember there is no man/woman so blessed by God as those willing to kneel down and help a child in need. Merry X-Mas and May God be watchful and help you meet your quest for these children. Later--------------------------- bajafun777

Thanks bajafun.

fdt and BajaNomad

I hope that the toy drive was a success!

Questions:

Is there a way to donate money without using Paypal? I'm sorry if this is a repeat question, I have a nagging suspicion that this was covered earlier in the thread.

I have donations that meet your criteria - Unfortunately, I am also confined to quarters (couch-bed-couch -- faulty brain-to-foot communication incident) in Henderson, NV for the next week or so.

Are there any volunteers that would be either in the Greater Las Vegas area - or passing through on their way to points South - who would be will to pick these items up and get them closer or all the way to fdt?

To clarify - I have toys (mainly stuffed toys suitable for young children), warm clothes, mittens and gloves (all clothing items in small sizes - mostly for females) and even a pair of snorkeling flippers.

Total amount would fill approx. one Hefty bag. I can box things or repackage, as needed.

Thank you.

Thank you for youre interest in helping the toy drive.
The toy drive will be on January 04, it is for Dia de Reyes, in Mexican culture (at least originaly) there is no Santa Claus that brings gifts on Christams Eve but the gifts come on January 06, the day of the Reyes Magos, the 3 Kings or 3 Wise Men or 3 Magi that came looking for the new born child Jesus, guided by a star, and rought gifts,Gold, Frankincense & Myrrh. It is when the children make theire letters with wishes and place them in theire shoes for the 3 Wise Men to bring the gifts.
We also have Rosca de Reyes that day.
All this started as an idea a little over 3 years ago and thanks to many Baja Nomads we have been able to make many children happy and after this event the number of children will exceed 400.

fishbuck - 12-26-2008 at 06:15 PM

Went to Toys r Us today and got a few things.
1 basketball
1 football
1 Nerf indoor basketball kit
1 set Starwars action figures
1 set Wrestlemania action figures.

Still have some time to shop so is there any priority items?

Not sure when I'll be there but I'll U2U.
If anyone between Costa Mesa and Tijuana wants to send anything with me send a U2U.

Miette - 12-26-2008 at 06:31 PM

fdt Thanks for the reply - I will do some research on the past threads.

We celebrated January 6 in France - although, most people there have a feast and open presents at midnight on December 24.

Based on the fact that my left ankle is swollen to the size of a rugby ball, I do not think I will be driving (or walking) anytime soon.

SO - dear kind Nomads -

If anyone is passing by Greater Las Vegas enroute to fdt's location, or barring that - some place in Baja that could use the toys, warm clothes, etc. that I have to donate - hey, wait a second - I just noticed that I have two U2U's - my first - so maybe...

fdt - 12-26-2008 at 08:56 PM

Thank you all that have cotributed to the Baja Nomad Toy Drive. Here is were we stand as of tonight.
Counting what fishbuck just posted and the bikes that are to come from grover, having purchased toys with donations we received we are only short 32 toys to complete the 121 needed to give away. There is still one week left so I urge those that would like to send in toys to please do so soon.
Thanks and Feliz Navidad

Fernando,

Dropped off toys for the kids today at Jackson Hewitt in Chula Vista: 2 Star Wars LEGOS sets, 3 volleyballs (hope outdoor was the right choice), two youth sized basketballs, and three #4 soccer balls. Big 5 even gave me a discount when I mentioned where they were going (Gracias, Grande Cinco!).

I will also touch base with Grover re the bikes (I should probably check the u2u, which I always forget).
