Alarming situation on mainland

wilderone - 11-20-2008 at 04:30 PM

Reported on Lonely Planet travel forum. Reports of chaos at airports with people trying to get flights out of the country.

No story credit? Ah I like it anyway. Less traffic

Stop it!

I just went to the Lonely Planet Forum that is referenced here. It may be a hoax. Some are refuting the news. I think this kind of rumor could possibly start a panic exodus, but this has not been substantiated.

If true, that would be huge international news and it would be all over CNN and other news networks. It would cause an immediate response from our military to secure the Mexico airports and protect U.S. Citizens. We would not wait for a Mexican Government invitation. The U.N would declare it a security emergency.

I hate this kind of idea even being conceived as a hoax. It has the potential of catching on. :fire::fire:

Lets nip this one in the bud. This Forum should not participate in its perpetuation:!::!::!:

Ya know, I think you're right. I'm going to "edit" it and erase it. I really don't want to be an alarmist spreading false rumors. Sorry.

No, that would be confusing. Leave it at the top. Edit it with a personal disclaimer.

OK, I see you modified it. That is probably better. Thanks, Wilderone.

Cant find the story but I did read about Aeromexico changing some routes and not informing current ticket holders of the changes in arriving times. Apparently they were adding stops through cities that werent on the original itinerary. It was playing havoc with persons getting connecting flights. They only discovered it when the called to confirm their flights.

If you hate it, then why do it? There seems to be a race on this board to try to be the first to post any bad news. It is an unfortunate story, but think back to the crime activities in the united states during prohibition. Only now the news sources are faster and the weapons are a little more powerful.

Again, if you hate doing it then stop!

Russ - 11-21-2008 at 06:43 AM

OK

Sheesh! - I meant that, IF IT WERE A HOAX, I would hate to be the one to promote such a false story. If true, as I originally thought, it was a pretty sensational story and travelers should know about it - mainland or Baja - a wave of violence against tourists, if propagated by drug cartel gentes, may spill over to Baja environs where, as we all know, is a drug cartel warzone.
Doug, feel free to delete the entire thread if you want.

The problem with the current situation in Mexico is that EVERYTHING is believable. This is a result from no one being in control, no one offering security and no one offering instant accurate information.

If Mexico can figure out how to accurately tell you how many cars are in each line waitingto cross the border and have live web-cams to visually confirm- how come no one can get accurate info about REAL events in real time?

stanburn - 11-21-2008 at 11:51 AM

wilderone,

I was referring to Russ' post that is now deleted where he started it with the phrase, "I hate to do this, but"

So I asked the simple question, why would you do something you hate to do.

Regarding realtime Mexican news. Living here full-time with Mexican Satellite TV I find it very easy to keep up with current events. You have to remember that info north of the border is easy to get via the internet because everyone is wired. That is still not the case here. Newspapers, radio and TV are the timeliest.

At least that is my opinion.

Well, as I just flew from Oaxaca to Mexico to Los Cabos last Saturday, so of course I am wondering what happened when I wasn't looking. I will have to pop over to Thorn Tree to see what I missed on my flight from the mainland.
