Where would one look for a typical Baja panga for sale? How much would a decent one run?

Just a guess here. Decent one with T-top $5000 up. I have a '92 super ponga with an 2002 Yamaha 100hp 2 stroke new..ish Pacific trailer and good electronics. I'd ask $12,000 for it. Here's a photo just for reference:

no t-top just a bimini top

russ has a much NICER boat...
now thats a fishing machine that could travel around

there is a new one here in mulege for about 17 grand

i got two simular for $50 each and one for $75

these are all over the place

problem is they don't float very long without bailing :lol:

You need to be a little more specific as to the area. I have looked in La Paz where a typical 21 foot fishing panga with 4 or 5 seats across were going around $750 US for an edgy one that might need some fiberglass up to $1500 US for a pretty nice boat. In other areas the price is relative to the local market. In Loreto I found the fishing pangas pretty expensive whereas in Santa Rosalia where there were more available, they were a little less expensive. These boats were built to be tiller steered and were workhorses, easy to fix with a little fiberglass. The most famous of these boats were built by Arca and were great boats in terms of how they handled. From the mainland, there were lots of Reforma boats built and they were marked by higher gunnels in the rear of the boat to keep spray off of the operator. Because of their hull design they sprayed a lot more than the Arca boats. Ensenada had their own boat design which was a kind of mix and their boats were more designed to surf launch but I think the ride was never as good as the ARCA boats.
An early builder of the Arca boats was Lupe Diaz who is the designer and builder of Russ's boat. Lupe had a labor dispute and left Arca and started building super pangas which were a whole different boat and not a modified fishing boat with ladder style seats. The early boats were narrower than the current boats but did have some tendency to flex in the middle and delaminate the deck from the hull. Later boats of Diaz design took care of this flaw. These boats are probably the best riding boat ever designed for the sea of Cortez. The 23 especially, has the right length to ride the typical waves of the Sea of Cortez well.

Russ says his is a "super panga" in his post. It looks to be a 23 or 24 foot super panga and built by Diaz, as you say. Arca (or Arce ?) is now located in Las Barilles, I believe. I have seen his new super pangas that are equipped a lot like Russ's. They cost a lot more new! I wonder why Russ is selling? It would be hard to replace what he has.

Mine is a 21' Diaz. I could use the $ now and I haven't been using it the way I use to. It's an excellent boat and I really can't think of another boat I'd like more down here. Mine is pretty well equipped. And last time I had it out it ran flawlessly. Just now considering selling it so don't have a list of all the goodies that will go with it. If there is someone that is interested at this price they should come out and we'll take it for a cruise and go over what's what.

As Russ says, his is the 21 Diaz super panga which is narrower than the new panga which is basically a 23. Lupe made the new mold wider and put in some interesting reinforcement points. Harry Oxley has one of the new molded boats and has twin 55's on his boat and it is a really sweet boat. Arca went out of business and the last I saw of the molds was that they were pretty much unusable. A hardware and lumber yard in La Paz bought them and tried to make a few boats but it was pretty much a non-functional disaster. When Lupe Diaz left La Paz he moved to Las Barrilles and made a lot of the super pangas but when Van Wormer came in on a patnership, they went exclusively to the newer molds. They now make a sport edition, a full blown super-panga with deck caps and the whole works, and are now building a small sportfisher which looks to be a really well built and designed boat for the charter business on the east cape.

we have always bought our pangas from the fishing coops...they are super cheap and then ya can fix em up gringo style....a medium size panga might run ya usually under a grand.

i dunno what the bajagringo is selling, and i really don't wanna part with my baby, but if you come get it you can have it....only problem is it's 80 miles from the hiway.....and if i told you where, the sacred saints of the secret surf spots would pelt you with rocks from the shadows of the cardon......

Was the last person seen to be using that panga one who was observed recording GPS coordinates?

That would explain its current condition.

Just saw in the IV Press a Panga for sale. 21 foot 1990 too much to list. I dont know the person at all. 7500.00 Call 760-353-5881 no calls after 9:00 pm. Might be able to see it in classified online at IVPRESSONLINE.COM
