Vizcaino to Bahia de los Angeles via San Rafael

Santiago - 11-28-2008 at 05:55 PM

I'm thinking of doing this leg in early January in a 4X4 pickup (have never done before) and have a few questions:
1. Should I take the turnoff about 6 miles north of Vizcaino and then turn north at Ejido Angel Cesar to El Arco or drive further north on Hiway 1 to the El Arco turnoff?
2. By plotting on Google Earth - I get somewhere about 140 miles - is this doable, taking our time in 8 hours?
3. Should we plan an over-night stop with Poncho?
I will have 2 or 3 college kids with me - any 'must sees/dos' along the way?
Thanks

DO NOT NEED to go through EL ARCO!!

The road goes first to Guillermo Prieto then straight north to the San Francisquito- El Arco road... It crosses the Santa Gertrudis mission road just west of Miraflores... You can see it on Google or Wikimapia.org. Drove it back in New Years '02... very good road.

The almost 12 mile side trip to the mission is an interesting detour...

Here's the AAA map with the section drawn in that they forgot to map on this new edition.

yea, the cutoff from Vizcaino is about 5 miles north and is an easy, fast road. The road doesn't get rough until you get to the mountains. Mission St. Gertrudis is well worth the stop. The artifacts and mission are very nice...check it out.

Here's the 'new road' about the point where it crosses the state border (use your mouse to zoom out or move around): New road at state border

Here's the north end of the 'new road' where it meets the El Arco/ San Francisquito road (just west of Arroyo Purificacion): North end of new road

Hey Santiago;
Pancho's beach is great for a stop. No supplies or anything available though. As far as must stops for college kids. I would take them to Hussongs, Whale watching and maybe some boat camping with one of those big bottles of Cazadores.

MM: yeah - but what do I bring for them to drink?
Thanks for all the good info -will post photos and stuff when we get back.
