Explosion in Ensenada?

lizard lips - 12-16-2008 at 05:07 PM

Right at 4:00 p.m. today at least my area of Ensenada was rocked with what sounded like an explosion. Right now I hear all kinds of sirens. I live in Valle Dorado just south of downtown.

Anyone else hear or feel it?

fishingmako - 12-16-2008 at 05:49 PM

Do you know of anything as of yet? friends in Cantu area said it shook everything like a huge eartquake, whats up?

lizard lips - 12-16-2008 at 06:50 PM

Many folks felt it in Punta Banda as well as la buff and some seem to think earthquake but unknown for now.

k-rico - 12-16-2008 at 06:57 PM

Is the LNG facility still there?

bajabound2005 - 12-16-2008 at 07:06 PM

Yes it is! That's the first place I looked and we are directly across the bay from them. We think earthquake though it was mostly sound and rattled the windows...and the dogs! We thought it might have been a rock/land slide due to all the rain. We're between Punta Banda and La Bufadora. If Lizard Lips felt it where he is, most likely a quake.

BajaGringo - 12-16-2008 at 07:17 PM

Sonic boom?

Mango - 12-16-2008 at 07:29 PM

Exploded Electrical Transformer maybe?

I'm not there and don't know if it is raining.. But if the Ensenda power system is anything like the power system in Mexicali, this could very well be possible.

Every major rainstorm knocks out hundreds of transformers in Mexicali. The go out with a very loud explosion and flash. One that exploded just outside had me awaking in a hurry and checking that my limbs were still attached before I realized what happened.

There the main problem is dust build up then shorting in Mexicali, but bird nests, etc can cause it too. Instead of hundreds (and yes, sometimes it sounds like a war zone during some storms) you may have just lost a few transformers if it is storming.

I checked for earthquakes on the USGS and nothing near there except a 4.0 last Saturday.

Oh I doubt we'll have to wait that long...

Dynamite for the new golf course!

Bronco - 12-16-2008 at 08:46 PM

just more exploitation on our environment. Yesterday Woods and crew were running up and down Punta Banda via Helio's.
This is just more of a rush to excavate, level and ruin a area that really is not in need of the ultra wealthy and their need for exclusivity and giving nothing to the community - bar the Ejido who will sell anything. And has already began the retraction of agreements etc.

The noise could have been dynamite to begin construction of
Lobera- adding to the desalinization plan that will spew residue into our fishery. As I understand it is already in place.
Locals, try and drive to the development and see how you are greeted. I thought mexican people had access to the coast line???????????????

bajadogs - 12-16-2008 at 09:07 PM

Golf sucks.

bajabound2005 - 12-16-2008 at 09:10 PM

dynamite at "punta brava" would not have affected where Lizard Lips lives....where WE live, YES; because we abut the Punta Brava property. But it sounds like it was much stronger closer to Ensenada.

norte - 12-16-2008 at 09:15 PM

USGS does not show any quakes in that area today.

bajabound2005 - 12-16-2008 at 09:33 PM

so, where's Dennis with his thoughts on this????

bajaguy - 12-16-2008 at 09:36 PM

It probably was the Aurora (replacement to the SR-71) on a return to the US and headed to it's current base at Watertown, NV. The noise and earthquake like jolt was from it's "re-entry". It usually makes the return over the unpopulated Nevada desert south of Calentie where the noise and "jolt" are not as noticable. The Aurora is powered by two regenerative air-turboramjet (RATR) engines with a speed between Mach 5 and Mach 6 and a cruising altitude of 40 kilometers...........

Just my 2 cents worth

greybaby - 12-16-2008 at 09:37 PM

Any updates? We used to live in Valle Dorado & that is actually quite a ways from Cantu and Punta Banda. Lizard Lips, we lived on the corner of Zertuche & Lago de Chapala. Are you anywhere close to that?

lizard lips - 12-16-2008 at 10:09 PM

I'm on Calle Mar Caribe up the hill. Close enough.

Does it shoot microwave beams to implanted RFID chips? GNUKID might need to know about this right away!

If it is flying near Ensenada then the government will probably "beam" me into ANTHONY'S on my way through town this weekend. They will probably make me drink beer and spend money on the girls.
I'll try and resist but those "beams" are like voices in my head.
It's always the same. It says "Go over and talk to that girl with the big b**bs"
What can I do? It's the government.;D

Fish.......I would be more concerned with the black helicopters...(they DO exist)....and as a safety measure, I would put more aluminum foil in my hat.

Happy fishing, and stay away from Anthony's......it's bad Ju-Ju

Bad Ju-ju... ya she works at Anthony's:cool:

I'll try the heavy duty foil this time. I really don't have the time to kill in Anthony's this trip.
Well maybe on the way home...

postholedigger - 12-16-2008 at 11:27 PM

I heard it too. It rattled the windows in the house. I was just bracing for the jolting but it never came. Being from the Orient, noise like that is usually accompanied or followed by an earthquake.

Just keep an eye out for the men in black suits...

lizard lips - 12-17-2008 at 05:32 PM

Just found out it was a quake 4.4 centered east of Ensenada.

norte - 12-17-2008 at 07:10 PM

OH NO. You mean it wasn't the top secret stuff we all think we know about:P:P:P:P:P:P:P:P:P:P:P

lizard lips - 12-17-2008 at 07:44 PM

Earthquake, not really. Top secret? Not now. It was the Sinaloa cartel blasting the tunnel to the border all the way from Culiacan. I heard it was a b-tch going under the Sea of Cortez.

lizard lips - 12-17-2008 at 09:19 PM

Is that you minnow?

bajabound2005 - 12-17-2008 at 09:34 PM

no, it was NOT dynamite and if LL heard it in Valle Dorado --- well we live right next door to Punta Brava....and it was like a whisper, but noticeable.

Anyway, there was a brief and incomplete article in El Vigia yesterday which talked about all the environmental issues with Punta Brava. There was a big pow wow on Monday with the developers and whoever (which I gather were all actually media people) to address these issues.

"Woods and crew" were not running up and down Punta Banda via hellos; Tiger made ONE trip to the location via helicopter and then went off to a golf tourney. Yes, the desal plant is already in place.

What is your source that the Ejido has already begun "retraction of agreements"? Which Ejido? What agreements?

You're right, LL, sounds a lot like u no hoo.

Ejido greedo

Bronco - 12-18-2008 at 07:49 AM

Campo 7 has, from what I understand, made offers that can't be refused. I talked with a friend who had to move to the other side of the road a "trade of property" and another person further up the hill was made a offer for moneys she had put into her property. The one comment that was made, as I was told was , "you better read your agreement." The implication was the paper one recevied for the property purchased/leased in Campo 7 was worthless.

As most know dealing with an Ejido is very dicey to say the least. And lets face it Punta Banda was only a few years ago.

Recently new Cantu real estate experts are getting excited about this proposed concept.

it was very loud here but no earth movement. very strange earthquake.

Real Estate experts in Cantú? Experts?

Bronco....Have we met? It's a small town so we probably have.

lizard lips - 12-18-2008 at 10:44 AM

Yes Bruce it was not like the earthquakes I am use to also.

Yeah, I'm used to a bit more quaking during earthquakes. A part of me was a bit disappointed.

BajaBruno - 12-18-2008 at 01:20 PM

I don't see any earthquakes in the Esenada area for the the 16th at 4 PM, or even within a day of that. Maybe those other sources are worthy of reconsideration. :)

Then again, maybe it was. The rock quarry above the golf course, closer to Valle Dorado than Punta Banda, blows up the hillside frequently.

bajaguy - 12-18-2008 at 07:06 PM

Dennis....when I was down in November, the quarry had been shud down for a while. I don't know if it started up recently.

Whenever we had been there, I never heard any blasting. I don't think a blast or shock wave would propogate that far as people are reporting.

But that's just my 2 cents worth!!!!

wakemall - 12-18-2008 at 09:19 PM

You did not know??? That is how they kill the tuna in the pins...

OK...Lets see. hmmmmm...oh yeah. We can hear the Army base in Chapultepec when they are firing for practice. It's loud and clear. Perhaps they've upped the caliber.

Or...Has anyone here ever heard a propane tank explosion? It's scarey loud and I've heard and seen the damage from two of these. It happens.

shari - 12-19-2008 at 08:56 AM

this is exactly how our earthquakes began here in Asuncion a couple years ago...I heard a big explosion...I ran outside and expected to see the fishing coop in flames or something.....but there was nothing. The next day I asked a few people and they too ran outside to see something on fire....nada...then there was another "eplosion" a few days later and the rest is history. After the first few explosion types the shaking began in earnest! And nothing showed up on any seizmic apparatus either...because there arent any of this stuff down here...once they came and set some up...they showed up and we had up to 50-300 tremors a day!!! It was a very quiet christmas around here that year as most people went elsewhere to cook their turkeys.
