I fought the law and...

Dave - 12-19-2008 at 12:52 PM

Guess what?

Was stopped by Rosarito's finest last night. Two cops accompanied by a soldier. You would think that would have prevented a shakedown, right? ;D

Thanks, Mr Mayor. I'm glad our boys in black are well protected.

Woooosh - 12-19-2008 at 01:00 PM

So it didn't help? How much for three? Christmas is coming- this is the tradional shakedown season.

40 dollars. The army guy was busy protecting the cops so I didn't have to pay him. But considering I had my business bank bag, expensive billiard cues and musical equipment I guess I got off cheap.

Sharksbaja - 12-19-2008 at 01:46 PM

Tis the season!

ahhh. the good old days. When we only worried about police taking the small bribes. That doesn't even hit the radar any more.

$20 a head was nice of you- I'm sure they'll buy their masked bodyguard a taco or something.

Have you gone pro?

That's outrageous that the army is allowing the extortion to continue...someone call the cops!

tjBill - 12-19-2008 at 02:16 PM

$40! That's a lot for a mordida!!

In Tijuana, you eithier have to be a tourist or drunk driving to get that amount.

bajabound2005 - 12-19-2008 at 02:22 PM

what was your infraction?

That's rich

Feel special. You have just been accepted into the ranks of "Frequent Doners." Where are all those folks here who constantly say, "Never but never pay?"
So, give us the full scoop...what did you do to garner all this attention?

Here I am, Dennis-----------NEVER, BUT NEVER, PAY!!!!!!!

(and I NEVER have)

Barry

Woooosh - 12-19-2008 at 05:30 PM

What's the point of protecting corrupt police officers? Talk about a system stuck on stupid.

The army guy should have turned around and killed those two cops. Who needs them? What's the point of protecting the currupt- that's how we got to this point- isn't it? $20, $40, a simple extoriton , an express kidnapping... what's the diff? WHer do you draw the line? It's all the same... shoot 'em.

BornFisher - 12-19-2008 at 05:31 PM

Dave-- this should be in the "story forum". Then you could tell how you took them the the nearest pool hall, suckered them into a 9 ball game and got your money back!!!
Hey thanks for the reminder "tis the season".

Bob and Susan - 12-19-2008 at 05:32 PM

come on dave...tell us the truth

what did you do to get pulled over....???

bajabif - 12-19-2008 at 06:57 PM

did i miss a post? what did you get pulled over for? i got pulled over a few months back in rosarito for running a red light. and guess what... i was fully at fault. after checking my paperwork, the officer gave me a break.

Mexicali_Kid - 12-19-2008 at 07:24 PM

I haven't paid a bribe in ten years. If you are paying bribes, you are part of the problem.

If the officer insists on a bribe, I usually tell them I need the official receipt for my taxes. That seems to make them scratch their head and give up. Usually the officer will ask you to follow him and within a block or two he will speed away empty handed. DO NOT PAY BRIBES, YOU ONLY PERPETUATE THE PROBLEM. Insist on going to the headquarters and pay the fine.

Thanks for the advice

I'll do better next time.

Promise.

lizard lips - 12-19-2008 at 08:10 PM

If any one knows about bribes it's Dave. He's from Chicago, I mean New York so leave him alone. I'm sure he did what he had to.

Bob and Susan - 12-19-2008 at 08:36 PM

dave...you forgot to answer the question

what did you do wrong...???

I didn't forget

You just haven't asked the right one. ;D

gnukid - 12-19-2008 at 08:56 PM

If you break the law in Mexico you should pay the fine just like anywhere in the world...

Common offenses are no seatbelt, talking on the cell phone, speeding, failing to stop or yield, accidents, malo estacionmento, no lights, etc...

Apparently Dave failed to use my Baja patented long winded story-telling technique which can confuse, distract and bore any mexican police officer. Throw a few mentions of comida rica in there, girls and you've got a distracted, bored, impatient and hungry cop that will walk away happily to go eat.

marv sherrill - 12-19-2008 at 09:00 PM

I'll bite - what were you doing correctly that you got pulled over for???

Not speeding

You aska the right question and you geta the right answer.

lizard lips - 12-19-2008 at 09:26 PM

Ok, WHY did you give him $40 bucks?

AcuDoc - 12-19-2008 at 09:41 PM

I've never been pulled over in TJ, Ensenada etc. My first and only time in over twenty years was in Tecate. It was Sunday night and I'd been driving all day from Loreto. The border was so close I could taste it.

It was my first time going through Tecate and I wasn't very familiar with the same streets etc and I was pulling a 16 foot tin boat. Before I knew it a motorcycle cop had his lights on behind me.

First he said it was 25 kph not 25 mph and I was speeding; I was not I know about that one. Then he said I ran a yellow light and that its not like in the US. I've been driving Baja for years and know that one too. As I had nobody to watch my boat etc if he called me calling him on his bluff and ended up in court I paid the "little bite".

First he said $200 and caught myself starting to laugh. Then he said just make it "easy on yourself". So I came to $30 which he accepted.

Why did I pay when I was innocent of what he was trying to bust me for? One reason was the above. The second was like I said I had been driving all day, I was tired and just wanted to get across the board and I was less then 5 minutes away with no line. And third I thought it would cover the HUGE u-turn I made on the main drag that he never even mentioned. LOL

To protect my investment

A better question would be:

Why would they ask?

They weren't shy about it neither.

ckiefer - 12-19-2008 at 10:09 PM

ok, I'll bite....why would they ask?

Bajafun777 - 12-19-2008 at 10:24 PM

Yep, if I music equipment, new set of pool balls and what I won at the pool hall in the front seat I would not want to leave any of it in a police parking lot while I went inside to pay the ticket:biggrin::tumble::lol:. Just kidding Dave and I try not to pay either but sometimes just to get over the B.S. you do as even if it is $40 dollars there is no ticket in the USA that is that cheap. Like the cell phone use is a $25 dollar ticket but with the court costs as we have the justice hand in there grabbing to it goes up to about $165 or so. So, Mexico has the little bite and we have the giant glup and then some. We also have those speed traps even here in Imperial Valley and God ride with you if you have California plates trying to make it through Texas without getting a B.S. ticket. I don't care what you say or do you gonna pay. Now, you ready for this on the back of the ticket every State in the dang Union can go to online traffic school except who:::::come on you all know, yep California. Right on the back of the ticket they have the gall to write it even. So, why isn't California doing the same thing to Texas the DMV says it's because California let's anybody be anything or do anything they want, yeeeeeehaaaaaaaa So, now as Mr. Wizard would say what did we good boys and girls learn, if the government isn't doing it to you then some its friends will and if that runs out everybody else will take a shot too, just the way this crazy world is. Later-----bajafun777

bajabound2005 - 12-19-2008 at 10:42 PM

well, as much as Rosarito is trying to promote itself, I'd be reporting the incident to someone...if I'd not done anything wrong. But since Dave is being so close-mouthed unless the "right" question is asked....

Dave, looks to me like there was a DWG violation here on your part, no?

You know, 'driving while gringo'?

Sorry. Had to.

Sharksbaja - 12-20-2008 at 01:20 AM

So that army guy was legit? And what about those cops? Who would know?:?:
Yikes, it IS bad!
I'll agree however that mordidocito este necesito sometimes. Works for me. I'd rather pay the fine on the spot.
It's all a matter of good value to me.

DENNIS - 12-20-2008 at 07:14 AM

Actually, they had taken up residence parked in front of his restaurant, Margaritaville in Puerto Nuevo and business had come to a complete stop so, he paid them to repark their police car in front of one of Ortega's joints.

Merry Christmas, Dave.

burnrope - 12-20-2008 at 10:05 AM

My brother got pulled over once for doing wheelies on his XR all over Ensenada one time while he had his helmet cam on. He left his helmet on and taped the entire negociation. It ends with the cop telling him not to hand him the money but to toss it in the patrol car.

David K - 12-20-2008 at 10:16 AM

Can your brother put that on You Tube ???

burnrope - 12-20-2008 at 11:39 AM

I'll ask him next time I see him.

No

They were disappointed when it turned out I wasn't a local (I have Mexican plates on my car). They are far more predatory with their own people.

Bob and Susan - 12-20-2008 at 12:55 PM

i think that is true too..

they know americans tend to "whine" when something is wrong:light:
