Ultra Low Sulfur Fuel?

DianaT - 12-20-2008 at 05:16 PM

OK, I did a search and came up with a 6 page thread from 2007 including the posts from Baja Cactus that the stations were going toward Ultra Bajo Azufre.

As expected, that thread was a giant disagreement. Is there any newer definitive answers?

My son has a BRAND NEW Dodge Truck and wants to come and visit---so what is the situation with the ultra bajo azufre?

Not only is important to know for Baja Cactus and El Rosario, but for the stations in Vizcaino and in between.

Thanks
Diane

There is still a lot of controversy, which I'm sure will soon be posted, but we just drove our new Chevy that requires ULSD over 1700 miles on Baja Diesel without problems.

i just drove another 1600 miles in 4 days with no problems

tell your son there is NO excuse not to "come-on-down"

I don't think running non USLD would hurt the engine. Getting rid of the sulfur in diesel is more of a pollution thing. Some say that you lose some lubricating properties too, but that is not the case. You might contact Dodge and ask, or do a lot of checking with engine rebuilders and get their thoughts. My older engine can take most anything, but the newer computerized engines are a bit more finikey.

Diane, he is going to get lower sulphur diesel at El Rosario and may only have to put in a little to get back to El Rosario which should be pretty unconsequential. I have read all the controversy and opinions of people on this board as well as several others and there is no clear answer but I personally will buy a new diesel truck as soon as I can wear this 2001 out (it only has 110K on it now) knowing that I will be using it primarily in Mexico.

I have engaged in a lengthy discussion on this forum about this issue. I found lots of statements about the damage that could be done to 2007 and later diesel engines. My initial position was that one should not use the older diesel in these engines. Since reading the posts of others and following their links it now appears to me that given the longevity one can anticipate from a diesel engine a short exposure to the old formula COULD shorten the life of some components, but not likely that one would be left stranded by the short term use of the old formula.

There now has been two years of experience and many miles logged by Nomads who report no problems with their vehicles. In my research on the internet I found a few cases of problems, but one can expect a certain number of problems with any product in mass production.

Choosing between the certain good of visiting family and the POSSIBLE long term diminution of longevity of diesel parts I would choose visiting family.

JD- If your son is worried about causig any damage to the fuel system, just have him purchase some cetane boost and injector cleaner made by Golden Eagle. He can purchase these products at any pep boys or autozone, I throw in a bottle every tim I go down to BAJA each bottle is good for up to 5000 miles. I also replace my fuel filter after every run down cheap insurance.

Good call BAHA I use golden eagle products all the time. They actually started selling the ULSD at the pumps here in the states around Sept of 2007. I had the lift pump go out on my 05 cummins the following june on a trip back from Loreto. As soon as I crossed the border at TJ my truck shut down, had to limp her all the way to the norco Dodge dealer, what luck.

the lift pump went out on ALOT of these trucks

Most of the folks up here who are worried about the UlSD add about a quart of 2 cycle oil to a tank of fuel.It actually make your engine run quieter.
The 2 cycle oil gives it more lubrication. You can go on one of the truck Forums and read all about it. As stated earlier most of the problems were with the vp 44.They get there lubrication by the fuel supply line. Dodge corrected that problem on the next generation truck.
