San Felipe - Crossing at Mexicali - Is it safe?

nbarland - 12-22-2008 at 02:57 PM

Hi,

We have a planned trip to San Felipe - crossing the border on Dec. 25th morning.
We just heard about the crime along the border (and the US Travel Advisory).
I was wondering how bad it really is? Has any of this hit around Mexicali/San Felipe?

Thanks!

I have not seen any reports of trouble in Mexicali to San Felipe travel... to tourists or locals.

In fact, tourists are rarely affected in the Tijuana area, as well. Keep reading Baja Nomad or use the search feature to seek information.

We are crossing south at Mexicali on the 31st.

I cross there at least twice a month. I have never had a problem in Mexicali. I came back yesterday and the wait must have been three hours at the crossing in town. Be aware that there is a detour in the middle of town but follow the signs and you will be ok. Anyone who knows the area, insted of going on the right side of costco stay on the road to san luis at the circle and follow the detour signs about two miles down to get you back to 5. that is where the detour ends up without getting into the long lines by costco. We will be at our house on the rio hardy from the 27th until the 3th. I don't think we'll make lou's this year as we have many people coming to our place. If you would like to see what the rio hardy is all about anyone is welcome to stop by for a tour. Just let me know.
Merry Christmas to all
Mick

Szell: Is it safe?
Babe: You're talking to me?
Szell: Is it safe?
Babe: Is what safe?
Szell: Is it safe?
Babe: I don't know what you mean. I can't tell you something's safe or not, unless I know specifically what you're talking about.
Szell: Is it safe?
Babe: Tell me what the "it" refers to.
Szell: Is it safe?
Babe: Yes, it's safe, it's very safe, it's so safe you wouldn't believe it.
Szell: Is it safe?
Babe: No. It's not safe, it's... very dangerous, be careful.

I cross in Mexicali regularly and have had no problems. And I've not heard of problems from anyone I know down here in San Felipe. Itook the detour Mick mentioned and went without a hitch.

Too bad you won't make it down Mick, would love to have you visit again.

I've been in and out of Mexicali on a couple of occassions since November, the most recent northbound crossing was on 12/13. No problema. I always use the Calexico East crossing, the only problem was long line.:fire: There is some construction with Hwy5 closed in front of Costco and Mega. There are well marked detours though.:o Actually, I find recently that there are less vendors and beggars at the intersections lately. :?: On Hwy5 south of the Ensenada/Mexicali intersection there are some nasty pot holes. They're in process of making that portion of hwy a 4 lane. Probably ignoring the pothole repair due to that.:?:

We cross a couple of times a month, however, as mentioned before going south can be a pain. If you are coming from Phx, I find it is easier to cross at San Luis and take toll road 2 to hwy 5

We are crossing Thursday the 25th at sunrise... see you there.
