Yes

".....the governor said that in building the highway to Rocky Point and the construction of the new port of entry in San Luis, this fishing village [Santa Clara] will have an opportunity to become a tourist attraction more beautiful than the Mayan Riviera or New Cancun."

Is this hyperbole? Is this area really that beautiful?

Oh, I'm sure - about the same time Humboldt Bay becomes the major container port some people envision!

I'd call it hyperbole. El Golfo is ok in some ways but...

It's about the same sort of place as San Felipe before it got overdeveloped. Shallow water, sandy bottom quite a way out, pretty much limited to pangas or lighter craft, no way to launch any craft of size, currently almost fished out close in- pangueros have to go quite a ways out to catch corvina, shrimp etc. For me, the only attraction is it's close to Yuma.

Oso, I love you! You put it's attractions (or lack, thereof) in terms a fisherman can understand.

No need to visit any time soon................

Any good camping spots in El Golfo? Thanks in advance for your help.

I just assumed it would be taken over by the dune buggie crowd. Not that that's a bad thing

With 4wd aired down, there are miles and miles of beach. For RV's there is a large membership only park and a smaller public one in town. Other than panga fishing, the primary activity is indeed dune buggies and ATV's. They own the beach and there is no way to get away from them. They love to climb El Machorro, the lighthouse atop a steep dune.

Could be hyperbole heaped on hyperbole - or maybe a reporter got mixed up on what the Governor was talking about - but there's already a State coastal highway called Carretera Costera Riviera Mayo. It's located on the extreme southern coastal part of Sonora. It runs through a fishing/vacation area and used mostly by folks from Sinaloa and Sonora - and connects the towns of Yavaros and Agiabampo - I'd recommend this area too.

I wonder if this new coastal route will become the main artery for travel between Mexicali/SLRC and Hermosillo and on south. And what will become of poor old Sonoita.
