we saw these plants during june about 20 feet from the high tide line in the central region. they seemed to be growing in the sandy bluffs but not so
much along the sandy beaches.
any ideas what they're called?

woody in ob Hmmmmmmmmm. I had a good look through my photos, as I thought I had photographed something similar, but no luck. I
thought, perhaps another photo from another angle would help the botanists that are lurking to come up with something.
Sorry, nothing looks like a match - I have done a precursory search.

i have a picture with yellow open flowers but can't resize it small enough.

I don't see any spikes or thorns in your photo - did I miss them?
The long thinner bean-looking items are the flowers gone to seed pod form?
I'm chock full of questions today -
Was the stem soft and green? Hard and green?
Was there any scent to the flowers or the plant, in general?
Uh, what can I say, I like to play field botanist in my spare time.
Where are the real botanists when you need one? ;^~

Off hand —with no detailed flower parts to key out in Ira Wiggins definitive Flora of Baja California — looks like an Onagraceae family member, close
to an Oenothera or Camissonia. Given the habitat this fits as well.

sure looks like what we call Mal de Ojo which if a touch it and rub your eyes you will go blind...or at least your eyes will be sore...I'm not the one
who will try to prove its an old wives tail...it is a very common plant here.

Marla has it ;it's a primrose of some sort - probably a rare or occasional species - Oenothera for sure - !
