Dry Camping in Tecate, Ca?

fletchgd - 12-28-2008 at 06:38 AM

I’m crossing into Tecate, Mexico next week and would like to know if there is a place on the USA side of the border that would allow overnight dry camping. We would like to dry camp on the American side so we could get a early start the next day. Were driving a 24 ft motor home and were pulling a Scion xA.

Why dry camp ?
I would just pull into Potrero County Park - 8 miles from the border.

Diver has it right!

Portrero - A San Diego County Park - we've used it a number of times to get that early start through Tecate.

Not long ago the border crossing didn't open until 6:00 a.m., not sure about now.

Image doesn't look so good, but you may get the idea.

Thanks for the Potrero County Park suggestion. I wasn’t aware of any parks near Tecata so was attempting to dry camp instead.
Thanks again,
Gary

We should be there Wednesday night - in a red F350.

If you get there early enough, take the Scion to the border and get your FMTs the afternoon before you cross to save time in the AM. You will be able to park on the US side and walk across to the immigration office and bank.

We will be leaving Texas on 2nd or 3rd of January and won’t cross the border until 5th or 6th of January. I like your suggestion to get our FMTs the afternoon before crossing with the motor home.
