Dont know if it is a country wide policy but HSBC will not accept dollars in cash for deposit nor change.
Since this is an international bank, it makes me wonder why? Do they know something that the rest of us dont?!?!?!?!?

I paid 2 different fideicomisos at HSBC in San Lucas not more than three months ago. They were more than happy to accept pesos and even quoted a 10

article in yesterday's El Vigia (Ensenada) that prices in Mexico quoted in dollars are illegal -- including leases, etc. Story was about several
families having to move from their homes because their leases were quoted in dollars and with current exchange rate, they could no longer afford the
rent. Also cited several cases of stores having to close and move for the same reason. A seperate story was about how restaurant prices have
increased dramatically for the same reason, but on food/supply costs rather than rent. The article said some wholesale stores won't even put prices
out any more, you have to ask (this is interesting because we noticed one of the restaurant supply stores in town (PROSAN) has some items marked in
dollars and others in pesos....)
So, although pricing in dollars is illegal because the peso is the country's currency, all of this needs to go the supreme court....so that issue

We tried to pay our Fideo fees at Scotia Bank in La Paz in November. As in 2007 we took dollars as the fee is quoted in dollars but the bank would not
take dollars- explaining there was a charge for conversion of the dollars to pesos and back to dollars at the central branch in Mexico city. We could
however go to our bank- Banamex, buy a cashier's check for the conversion rate pesos from dollars and then pay the fee. We chose to come home and send

The problem is that we have a dollar account, many of our book customers pay us in dollars, all of our publishers want to be paid in dollars and we
are shut our of these transactions.
We have since heard the HSBC is in trouble world wide.

Mexico is attempting to reduce the demand for dollars and ultimately effect the exchange rate. As I understand it now, even if you have dollar
accounts, any withdrawls made wil be given to you in pesos at the current exchange rate. At least that was how Bancomer explained it to me last

This is illegal. Prices must be posted. Rarely enforced.
