BajaNomad

stranded in el rosaro

Diver - 1-3-2009 at 05:48 PM

so here we sit at bajacactus trying to find a control modual for our f 350.
the whole story will come later.
the short version is that we met nomad TW on the road and were rescued to bajacactus by he and his wife. he not only towed us off the road but ran my family to bajacactus and then came back looking for me. what an awsome person and imagine that the one person that stops is a nomad !!

anyway, we are here and antonio may be able to help us get the part sent down.
if anyone is passing or heading this way from SD in the next day or 2 please let us know. my baja cell is616-163-9450 and we are at the bajacactus with the truck and camper parked in their back lot.
very nice especially for my wife an kids to be in the arms of bajacactus and meeting many more nomads.
last night we met skipjack and son alex at mamas !!

we"ve already had one great nomad rescue and i bet nomads have something to do with the rest of our story.

seill trying to get to asuncion - maybe by monday or tuesday..

bajajudy - 1-3-2009 at 06:03 PM

NOMADS RULE

GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR ADVENTURE

Remember the difference between an adventure and an ordeal is attitude.

shari - 1-3-2009 at 06:38 PM

I can just see Pam and the kids curled up on a king size bed watching movies and taking nice hot showers in those fancy bathrooms with tile to die for...geez, wish we were broke down too. Weather here in Asuncion got real grey and threatening this afternoon...may even get some rain so Diver...good timing on the little truck adventure...some of my best times in baja were the result of breakdowns....enjoy the movie.

Pam could go see Kim who runs the fossil/gallery there..she could do some shopping...I bought a cool painting of hers and neat earrings...the best part is that the proceeds go to her doggie shelter...say hi from me.

[Edited on 1-4-2009 by shari]

Debra - 1-3-2009 at 06:53 PM

Diver, wish I was there to help in the rescue..........seems I'm always the one being rescued..........Nomad's are the BEST!

Sharksbaja - 1-3-2009 at 06:57 PM

Whew! Sounds like bad day ending up saved by a Nomad. Bueno suerte.

Paulina - 1-3-2009 at 08:15 PM

I'm waiting for the whole story. We left Bahia on the 2nd, passed through El Rosario at 10:20 am, making it to Punta Banda by 2:15. We didn't see anyone on the side of the road broken down. Bad timing on our part I guess. We have an F350 too, so if we had the part it (diesel) would have been yours.

I'm glad that you were rescued and hope that your part come quickly. If you think about it, it's a great way to start the year with a Nomad rescue and hospitality!

PS. Dern wants to know what a control module is. Sounds like another spare part we need to start carrying around. It's not your cam position sensor that went out, is it?

P<*)))>{

UnoMas - 1-3-2009 at 09:00 PM

Diver:
Better to be broke down in El Rosario than in the North West, I would take that vacation over the weather here.;)
These are truly the things that make memories, the locals will get you back on the road, it has never failed me, maybe a few day delay so enjoy it, could be shoveling snow:lol:
Your paradise is still waiting for you, hope you get there soon.
Happy Travels...........

Hook - 1-3-2009 at 09:07 PM

How did you determine that it was your power control module so quickly?

It is not the cam position sensor, correct?

BajaGringo - 1-4-2009 at 12:43 AM

Diver, just came back from San Quintin but will be back down on Wednesday of that is any help...

Sharksbaja - 1-4-2009 at 01:21 AM

Do you have a code reader? Might be able to confirm/dispell your probs.

Pompano - 1-4-2009 at 05:46 AM

Ira, sorry about your delay, but no better place than where you are. Today, Sunday, some friends are passing through Rosario enroute to my place. They may be at the BajaCactus right now. You might ask for the Despards. Unfortunately, they will have left US too early to be of any help with a parts purchase, but maybe..just maybe...Zeph has a spare module. He's an old Baja road vet. I know you have exhausted all the common cures..like turning ignition key (without starting) to on-off, on-off, on-off to reset computer...right?

Here's a couple 'possibles'..

http://www.dieselbombers.com/diesel-distress-support-ticket/...
.
If you are stuck, I will help in any way I can.

I have guests coming manana from north and south, but can send my DieselDodge your way.

1. Tow your trailer to Asuncion for you. My rig is set up for Fiver and trailer hauling.

2. Tow the Ford to a taller. (The Dodge is used to towing Fords, so will be no problem.)

3. Some house guests will be northbound soon and could bring whatever part I can get in Mulege, Sta. Rosalia, Vizcaino, or GN.

4. If you have found a part between Coyote and Rosario, but can't get it soon, I will get it to you a.s.a.p.

5. mi casa es su casa...the water is sooo much warmer here in Coyote Bay. Got kayaks for the kids, plus we're having bonfires.

But, I know you would rather be waiting for that part in Asuncion, so just let me know. The Dodge can be towing the trailer to your lot in 6-7 hours from here. Asuncion DOES stock Pacifico, no?

Have fun in Mama's (post food report?), say Hi to Kim at the fossile store for me, and hang loose. Not like the old days, is it?...now help is just a click away.
.

Bob and Susan - 1-4-2009 at 06:38 AM

diver...

rent a car from someone in town and
drive to the border and get the parts you need

you are only about 5-6 hours away

the ford dealer is right there at the border

then have the guys in town repair the truck

if you moved today you could have the parts
in el rosario monday afternoon and
the truck repaired tuesday for travel wednesday

keep the family safe in el rosario
and do what need to be done
dont fail

woody with a view - 1-4-2009 at 06:42 AM

what about the ford dealer in ensenada? is it closed sunday?

'Fraid so.

DENNIS - 1-4-2009 at 08:46 AM

Diver....

Woody mentioned Ford Dealer. If it will help, I can get the part from them tomorrow AM and send it south on the first bus to El Rosario. Let me know if that will work.

shari - 1-4-2009 at 09:00 AM

NIce offer Pomp...you just want an excuse to come and eat burro and lobster...I know! Diver, we all know that "should I go or should I stay now" feeling....I sure hope you are SURE it is that part that is the problem. This could take awhile...no rush though...looks like the tuna are in Abreojos anyway...there will still be lots of yellowtail for ya....if Pam and the kids want to hop a bus, we will be in Vizcaino tomorrow and again wednesday with a big car to take em all and can pick them up and settle them into a house.

Diver - 1-4-2009 at 10:23 AM

so we are still here and yes we are enjoying another fe days at bajacactus.

at first I thoought it was a fuel problem and amazingly found the 2 filter set fror my truck in el rosario. fuel was dirty but not too bad.
the truck would start and run for a few minutes before stopping - after it stopped and with the key still on, I heard a buzzing noise.
I found a 1x1x1 cube in the fuse panel under the hood that was buzzing.
both my US mechanic and the local taller electrica think that the part is bad. it appears to be some kind of fuel control modual ??
I had hopes of getting the part yesterday through Antonio but we missed the boat with phone calls.
I received a wonderful call from Ferna offering to send the part and I may take him up on that tomorrow.
Another option is for me to take the bus this afternoon to TJ and return tomorrow with the part. The part should be available at any large auto part store. the problem is how to describe it.
Something will work out manana !!!
I may sit outside the <Pemex looking for a Ņomad ride to TJ later today.

If/when we get the part, if the truck is still broke, we will have to look at ways to get the rig and trailer back to the US. Follow the continuing saga tomorrow.

thanks to all for your offers and well wishes.
and sorry - I am getting used to this mexican computer with worn off keys.

shari - 1-4-2009 at 10:25 AM

in my experience, the ONLY way to get the right part is to take it out and bring it with you as a sample...good luck...TioMiguel says you guys can stay in his casa here if you bus it down and he'll lend you his really cool Land Cruiser too.

Diver - 1-4-2009 at 10:27 AM

yes roger et all, we ate at mamas yesterday when we met skipjack and alex.
the place was jammed and the wait was not too long considering the crowd.
enchiladas con queso, tacos de pescado and hamburgesa for the little man were all happily eaten in quick order - not exceptional but certainly plenty good enough for our semi literate palettes.

jorgie - 1-4-2009 at 10:43 AM

Diver, it sounds like the crank sensor. if so you'll need to pull it
take good care, catch many YT.....

Ken Bondy - 1-4-2009 at 10:59 AM

Diver this is a longshot but I had something similar happen with my H1 a few years ago, solved by just draining the fuel pump and changing/cleaning the fuel filter. It may not work but you can do it yourself on the spot. If it doesn't work you are no worse off. Buena suerte, wish I could help.

Iflyfish - 1-4-2009 at 11:06 AM

Avia Bien amigo. Viva Nomads!

Timo1 - 1-4-2009 at 12:54 PM

C'mon Ira
We can't wait for ya to get here
Git 'er dun pal
cya in a couple days hopefully

Diver - 1-4-2009 at 02:52 PM

thanks again,

already drained and replaced both fuel filters.
Supposedly the crank sensor problem was fixed in 03.
hoping that either Antonio or FDT can get it sent down tomorrow.
Then we will hope it solves the problem !!!!!!!

rbwrivers - 1-4-2009 at 02:58 PM

Hope to hear you are back on the road and pulling into B. Asuncion soon.

shari - 1-4-2009 at 03:32 PM

OK diver....Santiago caught tuna today so as Timo says....git yer burro down here pronto and maybe you can catch a tuna!

rts551 - 1-4-2009 at 03:50 PM

Diver.

Started thinking after I saw you Sun Morning (white ford truck). Someone should have a code reader in El Rosario. If it is an electrical problem It should should show as a malfunction code. If so you would be assured of getting the right part.

Ralph

Tiomiguel - 1-4-2009 at 05:23 PM

Sorry to hear that you guys are held up for sure, but I understand its a nice place to get held up at. I have had the same types of troubles in the US and been stuck even there for a couple of days waiting for parts and dealers to open. We are leaving early Wednesday to spend an extra day in Loreto at the San Javier mission. It looks like we will have to wait for our reunion until next year right now. That will make it just that much sweeter. Good luck and love to Pam and the kids. Cheers guys and remember just to take it as it comes as its the best way to deal with stuff.

Ken Cooke - 1-4-2009 at 07:27 PM

I just saw Doug Means from Nomad today in Tijuana. Diver, did you see Doug?

Skipjack Joe - 1-4-2009 at 08:21 PM

I'm sorry to read all of this, Diver. When I got home I expected you to be at Asuncion by now. Our intial guess about the problem seemed to have been inaccurate. There's still the possibility of bad gas though, as you said the problems appeared right after the fillup there. That's just too much of a coincidence and needs an explanation.

The kids are probably getting restless by now. You have a wonderful family. We enjoyed meeting them very much. I especially enjoyed your impersonation of barbara that evening ....

BajaNomad - 1-4-2009 at 11:37 PM

Diver seemed to have confidently diagnosed the problem by the time we spoke in-person last night at the Baja Cactus. It was not a question of fuel quality.

He also shared Nomad-related stories with me - and I appreciate it. His story of assistance in this instance I will leave for him to share with everyone.

I found his business card on my windshield this morning on our way out (shortly after 6:00 a.m.), stowed it in my backpack and left him mine in return.

When I arrived in Tijuana today, FDT asked if I had Diver's truck part with me...

...uh-oh...

Fuel pump relay?

BajaNomad - 1-5-2009 at 09:02 AM

As he mentioned, after checking the fuel line, replacing the filters, etc... he was under the hood and - by chance - heard a strange buzzing sound. When he lifted the cover to the electronics, he found a small "control module" that was buzzing, and found that it was now not properly opening and closing the circuit as intended (or as I believe it was explained to me). It's something he reviewed - by telephone - with his mechanic back home and others... whom all believe it to be the issue he's experiencing. A "$10 part" per se.

Diver, I've heard so much about you (and read your posts) that I decided to stay on in Asuncion until you get here. Then it's back to Northern CA. Looking forward to meeting you!

bajaandy - 1-5-2009 at 06:54 PM

From the various descriptions, it sounds like a faulty electrical relay. Hope everything gets fixed-up and you get on your way again! Good luck! How nice to have all those various Nomad's trying to help you out. Social networking at it's best.

TMW - 1-5-2009 at 07:18 PM

Diver, wishing you the best. Once it's fixed have a great vacation.

Hook - 1-6-2009 at 07:33 AM

Hope that is the right part. If so, PLEASE LET THE REST OF US PSD OWNERS KNOW EXACTLY WHAT IT WAS. If there is a ten dollar part that I should carry, I want to know about it.

Also, it is smart to carry a backup CPS (cam position sensor) with you. I saw them available at AutoZone for under 5.00. I know you said yours was replaced but at the time that Ford finally issued a recall on the CPS (2007, I think), FORD WAS SHIPPING FAULTY REPLACEMENTS TO DEALERS FOR AWHILE. There is a chance you might have gotten one through this avenue or even through an aftermarket source. If this delivered part doesnt work, see if you can scrounge up a CPS.

I actually carry two in case I come across someone on the road. Once upon a time these were actually being sold for around 100.00.

bigboy - 1-6-2009 at 08:09 AM

I'm sure glad I have the V10 in my Excursion! My brother and nephew have both been stranded with their 6.0 diesels.

The V10 has never had a problem and never has been to the dealer! It may not get the mileage of a diesel but the Excursion has a 44 gallon fuel tank and the mileage is between 12 and 14mpg.

Hook - 1-6-2009 at 08:19 AM

6.0L arent PSDs.........they're POS!

We're talking 7.3s here.

bigboy - 1-6-2009 at 09:03 AM

Hook, you're correct! If the 7.3 was available when I bought my Excursion, I probably would have gone with the diesel!

Diver - 1-6-2009 at 01:34 PM

As you have heard, FDT was amazing in offering to help, sourcing the part and getting it on the bus to El Rosario.
Unfortunately. the mechanic -me- had the diagnosis wrong.

Funny things happpen ....
As we looked into things further and with more help from another diesel owner, I found another plug that was detached.
Having recently paid my Ford dealer to replace an alternator and belt, they apparently missed reconnecting this plug - the temp sensor that tells the thermostat what to do.
Now things are starting to make sense.
The truck overheated about a week ago for no reason - now I know the reason.
The overheating appears to have fried the cam shaft sensor.
Having talked to three mechanics in the states and a few Ford diesel owners who passed through - we think this is it !!
I managed to find a mechanic who with his small hands and my tools managed to get the old sensor out without taking anything apart - Ford says strip the belt and radiator to get at it !!
Tomorrow at 10 am the new one should arrive at the autopartes Mesa.
We will remain safe - and getting bored - in El Rosario at Bajacactus.
Happy hour starts any time now so feel free to stop and say hi if you're passing through.

Diver - 1-6-2009 at 01:36 PM

Oh and by the way, the 04 and later 6 liters do not normally have a cam shaft sensor problem.
The newer 7.3 owners should carry a spare sensor with them because it goes often in the 7.3.
I am thinking of rebuilding my 94 F250 with 7.3 and little electronics !!
Something I can understand !!

dtbushpilot - 1-6-2009 at 01:51 PM

I think I'll go out and give my Dodge diesel a big hug.....sorry Diver, I couldn't resist.

Hope you get on the road soon and hope to meet you in Asuncion, I'll be there on the 13th....dt

Skipjack Joe - 1-6-2009 at 01:53 PM

Diver,

You probably don't need my advice on any of this. But if you could somehow get the wife and kids to asuncion while this whole truck thing is resolved they won't have to miss out on their vacation as well. This may all resolve itself this afternoon, or it may go on.

Hook - 1-6-2009 at 03:35 PM

Here's hoping its the CPS.............I'm raising my glass of club soda and lime as I write!

Typical mfgr suggestion on removing a part; maximize the labor time. While those can be a byatch to remove, it shouldnt necessitate removing the radiator and belts.

Buena suerte, Diver.

My first thought was to save all your reciepts for the $$$$ you spent on hotel, food, parts, etc. and present them for reimbursement to your Ford dealer. Their mistake should pay for your losses. In the real world that probably can't happen, but the Scorpio in me would want to go get 'em!

I also second Igor's idea regarding sending the family ahead. They'll have a fun experience, that is unless they have to get back for school. :(

Sharksbaja - 1-6-2009 at 06:39 PM

What about that buzzing relay? I hate it when they do that!:fire:

Were all pullin' fer ya Diver!

DianaT - 1-6-2009 at 06:43 PM

Happy to report that the Diver family is doing well and holding up quite well--making the best of the situation.

Spirits seem high, youngest diver found a playmate, and they have a great room.

We stopped and visited with them a little earlier on our way to San Quintin.

We had hoped to visit with our BA neighbors in BA, but it was good to see them under any circumstances. Shoot they even had a really nice xmas present for us.

Some neighbors---when they visit for dinner, they bring the food, cook the dinner and clean up the mess---then they bring us a Christmas present. OK, Diver, I will try sushi again.

Sure hope all works well tomorrow!

Diane and John

TMW - 1-6-2009 at 07:36 PM

Ford is probably basing it on someone with big mechanics hands. But as Diver said small hands can do it. I helped a friend change one in Catavina at the south water crossing. His son had small hands and we had it changed in no time. He had seen a FORD bulletin on the sensor so he had a spare with him when it quit running.

stimbo - 1-6-2009 at 07:53 PM

Hey Diver -- At least on my '99 Ford, all you need is a 10mm wrench to replace your CPS. Good luck and happy trails from now on! Jim

Bob and Susan - 1-7-2009 at 06:49 AM

so ford owner carry spare mechanical parts ALL the time???

so...the old saying "fix or repair daily" is true???

Hook - 1-7-2009 at 07:07 AM

No problems with my fuel pumps so far, BOB.

Of course, a disconnected cable by a repair guy and all bets are off.:wow: This is the single biggest reason I like to do work on my truck myself.

I got to thinking about that disconnected cable, Diver. I'm not understanding how this could raise engine temps through information sent to/from the thermostat. THERMOSTATS ARE GENERALLY NOT ELECTRONIC DEVICES. THEY OPEN WHEN THE COOLANT TEMP REACHES A CERTAIN TEMP. I assume they do this by the characteristics of the materials they are composed of. I highly suggest you drive around close to ER for a good hour to get the temps back up (not just at idle) and see what happens. WAS THE THERMOSTAT REPLACED WHEN THIS OVERHEATING INCIDENT OCCURRED? IS IT POSSIBLE THAT YOUR RUN TO ER AND THE OVERHEATING INCIDENT WERE THE TWO HOTTEST/HARDEST THINGS YOU'VE ASKED YOUR TRUCK TO DO IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS?

Bob and Susan - 1-7-2009 at 08:27 AM

I have to be honest, I've put far more money into my truck ('99 Ford F250 diesel) lately than I care to admit, but then again it has nearly 200,000 miles on it. The wear and tear is starting to show.... the thing has thousands of Baja miles under the hood. I'm currently looking for a new "ride." But.... that said, I do carry a full tool box, spare hoses, belts, a spare CPS, etc.... I believe in self-sufficient travel in case the "sh*t hits the fan."

bigboy - 1-7-2009 at 09:50 AM

David,

My Baja Bronco has 240,000 miles on it and it never left me stranded. It probably has 40.000 off road miles and has towed boats that weighed in excess of 7,000 pounds.

Not one major problem, just the normal routine servicing. Presently it lives at my house in the Punta Banda area and I expect it to last many more miles!

The truck broke down around Catavina and helped back to ER by TW. So, you're right, the hills between ER and Catavina were probably the toughest part of the drive of the entire trip.

David -- Did I mention I was shopping for a Toyota? We got our moneys worth out of the Ford, but with kids moving on to college, we don't need the mother-ship anymore. We are starting to downsize....

Unless they're doing it differently today, thermostats used to be made to open/close based upon the liquid/solid state of a wax pellet (the wax coming in different compositions to melt at different temps, 160/180/etc).

Bajaboy - 1-7-2009 at 04:34 PM

We're sorry we missed you in Asuncion. We looked for you every day. Yesterday, I did a quick look for you truck at Baja Cactus but didn't see you. Give us a shout on your way north.

Diver - 1-7-2009 at 05:15 PM

THE SAGA CONTINUES .....

This morning I went to the autopartes to pick up the ordered cps - it arrived but was the wrong one ! I was one sad puppy.

Oh sorry senior, we don't carry THAT one, maybe 3 days.

Another quick call to FDT, a confirmed part number from my local Washington dealer to the SD ford dealer ....
Then the SD dealer wouldn't take my credit card over the phone cause they don't trust a single one of you California crooks.
Then I called my hometown Ford dealer parts department, gave him the credit card number, he called Ford in SD and now the part will be picked up and put on another bus tomorrow by the wonderful Simone and FDT !
Scheduled arrival is 9 pm.
I will need to find the mechanic with the small hands again on Friday morning.

Check the Friday midday update, if it doesn't work this time, we will thumbing rides at the Pemex !!

Hook etc.
I think this sensor goes to the gauge and possible to a secondary cooling fan - I never knew it was overheating until it starting loosing power. I have checked since then, even when the truck eventually died climbing the hill outside of El Rosario and it was not overheated - just a little puff when I opened the cap.

And David .... oh nevermind ! :P :P :P

Diver - 1-7-2009 at 05:23 PM

Skipjack and others,

Yes I have thought of trying to get some of us somewhere but with 2 dogs and 2 kids, there was just not a workeable solution. The kids are making the best of it, biking through and around town, driving the folks at the Bajacactus and Mamas a little nuts with their walkie-talkie games and other fun ideas. I was personally seen doing my labomba dance immitation to the cleaning ladies music this morning.
We are still planning to head south if all works well on Friday, otherwise this may become the vacation that never was.

Thanks to all of you friends and well wishers.
It actually DOES really help to have all of you Nomads to help and support us, or even just give us grief.

Thanks all very, very much.

The funny thing about baja trips, Diver, is that you don't know how good they are until they're over. A lot has been said recently about the well planned baja trip as a model for success. I have found that not to be true. What I'm trying to say is that years from now you and your family will be fondly remembering this trip. Mark my words. It's the unexpected that makes life interesting and worth living. Look at baitcast. It's been what, 50 years, since he and his wife struggled to get over the Three Sisters on gonzaga and he's still talking about it. It's not the beautiful views or the idealic weather that has survived all those years.

"Dad, remember the time we broke down at El Rosario? Mom was so nervous. And then that guy TW showed up ....."

Paulina - 1-7-2009 at 07:39 PM

Igor,

You just nailed it. "It's the unexpected that makes life interesting and worth living."

This trip, Diver, is going to be one not to be forgotten. You've also made new connections in ER that many of us can only wish we had, specially in times of need.

P.S. I hope your wife took photos of your dancing debut.

Paulina,

I developed this outlook on life by watching "Groundhog Day" - repeatedly.

David,
This is really over the top. We just don't believe it. Diver and family are stranded in El Rosario and you from this post on, make the thread about you, your political beliefs, and lifestyle.

Gees, you were even in El Rosario and did you offer any help?

We are Toyota people through and through but our Tundra would not do well towing Diver's trailer. OK, it has towed a small trailer, but we don't have two young children.

Your style of traveling is your style, your preference in trucks is your preference, your right wing politics are always present, but what does any of that have to do with this thread?

Yes, David, you are a real nomad. You were in El Rosario and offered nothing, but now you are just smug over the performance of your Toyota. Our Tundra with well over 100,000 miles is flawless, but so what??

Does that offer any help to Diver? Gee, Ira, (Diver) see if you can find a toyota in town and solve all your problems.
:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Diver, we arrived home safe and sound and are still thinking about you. While we hope things turn real positive real soon, if not, let us know and we will drive down there and ferry your family back to San Diego so they can fly home, or stay here in Imperial Beach with us until your truck has recovered.

Is there any chance that we can keep this about Diver and his problem? Maybe good suggestions as to the possible problem?

We are ready to head back down to pick him and or his family, wife, two kids and two dogs, if necessary---and through U2U we have offers of help with this.

Diane

DianaT - 1-7-2009 at 09:39 PM

OK, and WOW

Besides the offer via u2u to help ferry the family back to the US, we have also had an offer from a former nomad to bring back the truck and trailer with a flat bed. We have forwarded that e-mail to you.

Diver while you know that we really hope you make it down to Diverlandia in BA, we along with others are here and ready to bring you north if needed.

Diane, you are the only one staying sane in this whole thread! Maybe a few others but Ken and David K can back off for now. We've already seen all of your pix of all of your trips (both of you!). This isn't a thread of who has the better Baja vehicle....#$%^ happens to everyone and sometimes the vehicle just "no go" or no va as some of you may be more familiar with! Hope never to be in that sitch!

Iflyfish - 1-7-2009 at 10:04 PM

Diver,

grrr, what a bummer

If tthere is anything I can do anything here in Oregon, let me know.

BajaGringo - 1-7-2009 at 10:16 PM

Diver: I am at the border and heading down to San Quintin. Let me know and I can bring a part with me down tomorrow....

David K - 1-7-2009 at 10:20 PM

Before adding other stuff, I understood Diver got the part from Ferna... so I thought it was fixed.

Diane, we arrived at a full Baja Cactus parking area, we had NO idea any Nomads were there or were in trouble... I walked to the office and the clerk said they were all full (even the commercial rooms) and told us to go to the Turista Motel... which we did. She did not tell us of any Nomads in need of help... and she knew who I was (called me Sr. Dah-veed). If it was important, than maybe a sign taped to the front desk asking for help or for any Nomads to go to Room #xyz would have been an idea... I would have gladly offered to help Diver, let alone just to meet him. Shame on you for that low blow. How many of you stopped to offer help to a Mexican motorist? We did Saturday, north of Guadalupe Valley to an overheated car. We are good American travelers, not the 'ugly' ones.

Frank, my wife is in a union, so I am not anti all unions... just the ones that put their demands ahead of a companies abilty to stay in business. It is just silly... and sad that so many think because a company is big it can afford every demand put upon it. Obviously, they cannot.

Again, sounded like Diver was out of trouble... at least I hope so!

Sure wish I knew what Diver's current status and symptoms are.

I HAVE learned that Obama is the second coming of Christ, GWB is apparently not the Ricardo Cabeza I thought he was, unions are the cause of the poor management at GM AND GMAC (didn't realize loan officers were unionized, lol!).

And Nomad are a pretty helpful lot, in a pinch..............

Sunman - 1-7-2009 at 10:25 PM

This quote comes to mind...

"All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveler is unaware."

Sounds like you have things in perspective Diver, as others have said, this will be a trip you will never forget and something good will blossom from it if it hasn't already. Nomad generosity never ceases to amaze me.

As noted by his 4:15 p.m. (Pacific Time) post to this thread, he's received the wrong part, and is still stranded - along with wife, kids and dogs - in El Rosario.

David K - 1-7-2009 at 10:51 PM

Thanks Doug for that... I will delete all my replies to others in this thread that are not Diver related... sorry for the distraction!

Diver is not answering or posting as soon as he could for a very good reason. Just to top things off, his laptop died so he is using the internet cafe.

Hope the news is better today.

jorgie - 1-8-2009 at 07:48 AM

go to page 4 , Divers update is there.
maybe a Nomads LOG book at various accomodation locations would show the sign in / date of Nomads in-house or having been there.
maybe a project for somebody..................

shari - 1-8-2009 at 08:27 AM

hey Diver...Tiomiguel said you could use their house if ya wanna send Ms.Diver and the diverettes down on the bus...we can pick them up in vizcaino....suerte buddy...

Diver - 1-8-2009 at 04:09 PM

Go Nomads !!
The rescue continues !!

Bajagringo has followed the post and when he saw that a part for my truck needed to get from TJ to me in El Rosario, he jumped right in.
He has driven north to TJ and now will overshoot his planned destination of San Quintin to bring us the part. He just called from the road and should be here within the hour !

I have to run and find the mechanic and plan to test the truck tonight if all goes well.
Keep all of your fingers crossed for us please !

We have received the most wonderful offers,
from Pompano offering to come and get us - and he means it !
We just never figured we would be here this long.
To offers to drive the family north to offers to trailer the truck and even offers to send money.
Nomads are amazing and wonderful and .... I have to run but hope to have good news soon.

fdt - 1-8-2009 at 04:25 PM

Great. This part has to be the one.

DianaT - 1-8-2009 at 04:45 PM

Sending positive thoughts your way and making offerings to the part's god.

Oh, I heard there is a Ford Dealership in Washington who is closing up shop----they don't want to be there when you return.

Diane

Ken Cooke - 1-8-2009 at 04:48 PM

Baja Gringo is a great guy. Good to hear your part is being delivered.

Tiomiguel - 1-8-2009 at 08:35 PM

We are on our way home now, Loreto for a couple of days, so Diver and family, keep cool and enjoy being together wherever you are. It was a great trip for us, sorry yours delayed so we could not hook up. By the way, San Javier mission rocks, but its a heck of a drive up there for sure, 4x4 suggested with decent ground clearance and not sure how your big truck would make it up that road. But you may want to try it sometime, Ben, Edder and Tia Juanita send our best wishes. Keep on trucking.

Paulina - 1-8-2009 at 08:38 PM

Yeah! Crossing my fingers over here!

Or time to get another hat

Diver - 1-9-2009 at 10:53 AM

Bajagringo showed up with the new part yesterday afternoon and we got it instaqlled with the help of the ocal mechanic. I am glad to say that Bajagringo looks nothing like his mug shot !!

Unfortunately the part did not fix the problem - strike 3 or 4 or 5 !!

We are now giving up on trying to fix the truck and are looking for ways to get back to the US with the truck and trailer, wife, 2 kids and 2 dogs.

We have received some very generous offers for rides and towing and I guess it's time to call in all offers. Our Telcel number in Baja is 616-163-9450 and I will check the board again in an hour or so. We cannot access email from this computer so Nomads is all we have.

If nothing works out by later today, we will call Abe's towing in TJ and see if they'll come get us.

Thanks for all the suggestions, support etc.
.

Katiejay99 - 1-9-2009 at 11:02 AM

Hi Diver - I have watched this thread and been waiting to hear the good news that you were on the road again. So very sorry to hear that you are not. I wish I could help in some way, but I'm way too far away. I just wanted to let you know that if you were closer to Todos Santos, I'd jump right in.

Please keep us all posted. Buena Suerte. Kathy
