Cingular and AT&T in the USA use the SIM chips and I just called them and they unlocked my phone, twice. Used a Motorazr and then a Nokia 3g. Very
easy to switch chips, store the chip in the glove box. Only one phone to learn, address books and call records are great to retain...Nothing to it...

From what I've heard, the key is your phones are Motorola and Nokia. I've heard that if you have an AT&T, Sprint or other brand of phone, they
won't unlock it. Things may have changed since last year, but it's not who your carrier is, it's the brand of phone.
It would be nice if I was wrong and AT&T brand phones could be unlocked....
Someone else pointed out something we didn't think of before venturing south with our north cell phones. Call the carrier and expand your coverage
area to include international/Mexico. We could make calls from La Paz to a La Paz # but no calls to the states.
BTW, the La Paz calls were billed to our carrier at $3.99 / minute!

I had a Cingular, they are now AT&T phone and I unlocked it myself.
There are various programs on the internet you can download to do this yourself. Or you can pay someone to do it for you at a cooperative phone
store, etc..
