I going kiting in southern baja for 3weeks. I am wrenting a car in cobo and need advice on insurance i keep get conflicting reports. i know i need
libility ins. so i don't go to jail but the rental companies are pricy. and icanot find an alternative for a mex plated rental car???? the car is
$435 for 21days rental but i can't get a actual price in insurence i think $9 or $14 per day. is there a beter way? i know about the credit card ins
but it dosent have libility included.

By law, Mexican rental agencies provide minimum required liability insurance in the price of the rental. As for physical damage coverage, a different
story. And that can run as much as $25 a day. However, if you're renting using a credit card, check with your card benefits. You may have that
coverage on your card. So, if you do damage your rental vehicle, the agency will charge your card. When you get back home initiate a claim with your
card issuer to be reimbursed.

I'm in a similar dilemna. Where did you find a 21 day rental for that price - chepaest I've found in Cabo was around $700 ....

dollar rental cars main office in san jose del cobo then i just booked a shuttle service for $22 round trip from airport. they hane not confirmed the
shuttle yet there called trans baja services.

It's that whole personal injury thing that can get ya. There are others who may have rented a car more recent than we did a year ago, but we were
VERY suprised to find out (while standing at the rental car counter) the rental car mandated insurance wasn't the $175 a year rate we had seen on
other Baja insurance websites. The rental agencies won't accept the other insurance like what you would get for a private vehicle.
Our insurance rate on a rental car for a month was about $23/day, effectively doubling what we had budgeted for a car. I don't think you have to buy
it, but you'd be in a world of hurt if something did happen and you didn't have insurance. I think they take you to jail until you pay for personal
injury damages to the other party.
Like I said, it's been a year........

Hello! Minimum mandatory liability insurance is included in the daily rate. Physical damage to the vehicle you are driving is not. See my previous
post. Dollar is not in San Jose, but just about a mile outside the airport.

You have be dealing with someone with integrity. There is a big incentive to get people to buy extra insurance. All cars come with minimum required
limits. They are low. But they prevent you from being arrested if you get into an accident. So, they try to up-sell the liability. Just simply ask
about the built in minimum. Check my previous posts about the physical damage coverage. I've been renting vehicles in Mexico for twenty years. Have
never paid a dime over the posted daily/ weekly rate for a car.
You may be able to confirm this simply by going to one of the agencies' web sites, such as Avis or Dollar. You can reserve a car there.

the Dollar shuttle stops outside the doors to the terminal at SJD... there will be several "facilitators" trying to help you get to the shuttle....
there is no fee... but tourist typically give a dollar or two for the driver handling the luggage... I too have rented many, many times(and from
Dollar) and always have to decline the insurance....

Actually, most, if not all the rental agencies have counters near the baggage area. They don't process your rental, but they usually have a list of
reservations and will call and alert the shuttle for you. Then proceed through customs and out to the curb. In all my years of renting, I've found
both Avis and Dollar to be very reliable. The one time I used Thrifty, I had a problem.
