car rental insurance

Mexican rental agencies provide liability insurance in the stated rate. They will ask you to purchase physical damage coverage at additional cost. If your credit card provides the coverage, decline it, and don't pay more than the base daily rate. If, you actually incur damage to the vehicle you rent, they will charge your credit card. Then, you can make claim against your card issuer to be reinbursed.

I highly recommend paying the extra damage coverage...it's a scam....when you take the car back they always find some little scratch or something that supposedly wasnt there and then they tell you it will take 3 days to fix it so they cant tell you how much it will cost till then...when usually you take the car back when you are leaving in a few hours...really is a huge screw up if you dont have the extra little coverage.

Can't argue with that. However, I've been renting cars in many Mexican locations for decades, never have purchased extra insurance, and only once had something occur. Fortunately, it happened within an hour of my rental and i made a big stink. Rented a car at Thrifty just outside the San Jose Airport. During the process, there was a time share shill there. Tried to get us to sign up for a breakfast. Refused. When, during the process of paperwork, i declined the physical damage coverage, Mr. Time Share was quite adamant that I should buy it. Nope. Anyway, we had to go back to the airport to pick up another member of our group arriving on a later flight. As I was hanging around the terminal, I noticed the same time share guy there. Picked up our party, got to the car and noticed that the Nissan hood badge was missing. Drove right back toThrifty, made a big stink about what had happened, and they made a note. No hassle when I returned the car. The beauty of this little trick is that all they would have had to do was "pop" the badge right back into its holder. And the beat goes on. So, yes. If you truly want to be hassle-free, buy the physical damage coverage.
