Still Stranded and Want to go HOME

 Pages:  1

Diver - 1-9-2009 at 11:07 AM

Thought I'd start a new thread just to make sure the message gets out instewad of buried in the original post.

Bajagringo showed up with the new part yesterday afternoon and we got it instaqlled with the help of the ocal mechanic. I am glad to say that Bajagringo looks nothing like his mug shot !!

Unfortunately the part did not fix the problem - strike 3 or 4 or 5 !!

We are now giving up on trying to fix the truck and are looking for ways to get back to the US with the truck and trailer, wife, 2 kids and 2 dogs.

We have received some very generous offers for rides and towing and I guess it's time to call in all offers. Our Telcel number in Baja is 616-163-9450 and I will check the board again in an hour or so. We cannot access email from this computer so Nomads is all we have.

If nothing works out by later today, we will call Abe's towing in TJ and see if they'll come get us.

Thanks for all the suggestions, support etc.
.

Bajaboy - 1-9-2009 at 11:46 AM

Diver-wish I could drive down and help out but Tracy and I have certification exams tomorrow. If you need anything once you get to SD, please let me know. Also, not to make matters worse but I saw on the news last night that parts of I-5 in Washington are closed due to flooding.

The good news it that it's supposed to be in the upper 70s to low 80s here this weekend.

Terryboo - 1-9-2009 at 11:48 AM

Driver, I am a retired oilburner mechanic that used to work on over the road rigs up until last year. What year is your truck. While many here have posted about the use of Mexican diesel in late model trucks,Its been my experience that the V8 diesels have a harder time with the particulate filter and the symptoms that go with that problem. The dodge trucks do not seem to be having trouble with this.
First, get under your truck with tools and unbolt the exhaust pipe leading to to particulate filter . Just open it up enough to get some exhaust gas around it. When the filter plugs up,a couple of things happen. You will lose power and and your truck overheats. Its a little like when your Cat Converter fails in a gas power vehicle.
Now after you has opened up the exhaust , you will be able to eliminate the particulate filter as the culprit. I have done this to a ford in LaPaz last year and he was able to limp home after doing it. If your truck starts to run after this effort. It will run a little louder than normal but it will not cause any damage.

The problem with these new fuel systems such as the high pressure common rail and electronic injectors is its getting harder to diagnose problems in the middle of no where. In the old days we needed compression, air, fuel and we could get any deisel to run.Now its a electronic guessing game.
I am sorry to hear about your problem but I think what I have told will help.

Good luck to you.

Sharksbaja - 1-9-2009 at 11:52 AM

I still think it's a fuel related problem. Does it start at all? Can you check to see if the fuel pump is actually working? What kind of fuel pressure do you have at the fuel manifold when cranking the engine, and what is it when it does start?? Have you eliminated the fuel system as the prob? Did you replace that noisy relay? What relay was buzzing? Just some last minute thoughts. Sorry about your mess.

I didn't see your post Terry, good ideas!

Diver,
If for some reason you end up needing anything else from the U.S. before you head home let us know. Jim and I will be driving by there on Tuesday on our way to Asuncion. Sounds like you should be on your way back home by then. Lauri

Debra - 1-9-2009 at 02:53 PM

Zac, I believe he lives in eastern wa. He will head up through NV. to get home. You are right though, it's a mess up here, I5 closed at Centrailia..don't know how long that will be the case.

Seeking information

Diver - 1-9-2009 at 03:10 PM

Phone calls and more phone calls ....

Trotters are coming down to pick up the family and the dogs.
Another wonderful offer has come to trailer the truck back to SD.
Now we need to get the camp trailer back to the US and not quite sure how that will happen yet.

If anyone is heading north soon with an empty trailer hitch ....
It's a 21 foot Prowler LT and is very light for it's size.
A friend pulls his with a V8 Explorer so any 1/2 ton or whatever will work.

I'd leave the trailer here except that it will make a handy place for us to live while the the truck is getting fixed and I-5 is drying out.
Worst case, I will drive back after the truck is fixed and hope the trailer and contents are still all there ???

Deb, we are 1 hour east of Portland and 3 miles north of the Columbia River. I-5 to I-84 to the Hood River bridge...

We've checked fuel pump and fuel filters and cam sensors and fuel lines and air filters and ....
It's got to be the computer thingy !!

Thank you again for all the kind words and offers.
Please excuse me not returning all the wonderful U2's I've gotten but I will.

Any trailer towers out there ??? :?:

Diver - 1-9-2009 at 03:10 PM

I love it Sharks !!!!

Debra - 1-9-2009 at 03:30 PM

Diver, you should be okay then. Good luck!

rob - 1-9-2009 at 03:36 PM

We are leaving San Diego Sat a.m. for La Paz (which could be bumped to Sunday if required). Consider this a last parts purchase/transport option - be happy to help and know the local Ford dealer locations from bitter experience.

Number in San Diego (actually Cardiff) is 760-944-1695 (John will answer - my own Telcel naturally doesn't work here).

Email is wahoo123@starband.net - will be home tonight packing, not carousing.

shari - 1-9-2009 at 07:17 PM

oh my...bajagringo is busted...when we had a blind meeting, I was looking for that hunky prison guy too...jejejejje

well Diver...soooo sorry for your problemas. If it's any consolation...juan didn't catch a bunch of fish today...just some bonita and a yellowtail...no tuna around. Our Suburban has been at three different mechanics for nearly 8 months now...like you we have replaced lots of parts and no go....crap

Way to go nomads for helping out ...baja gringo is a gentleman indeed and well done John and Diane for rescueing Pam and the kids...drive carefully and have a safe trip.

Sharksbaja - 1-9-2009 at 08:12 PM

"just some bonita" How dare you!:lol:

Actually I think Bonita(o) are my fav smoked fish. Not as good for regular prep.

shari - 1-9-2009 at 08:18 PM

oh yeah and a grouper....just trying to make Diver feel better!
We just smoked our first round of bonita and yeah, it's just fine...also makes fantastic tuna sandwiches when just boiled and shredded and mixed with tomato, onion, pickle and mayo....oooops...hi jack.....sorry diver...

DianaT - 1-9-2009 at 08:40 PM

Sharks,
That is just too funny. Really creative and a great comic relief.

We are now at Jardins in San Quintin and just talked with Diver. We think we have all the logistics worked out for in the morning. Broke our rule and drove some after dark. opps

Well, we love this place and are glad to be here---headed out for dinner soon. Carmen, the owner laughed because she knows we will keep coming back, but since we were here on Monday, she did not expect us so soon.

Always good to be in Baja

Diane

Mango - 1-9-2009 at 08:49 PM

Right on. You guys are all awesome. I wish I was around to help out; but, my Subaru couldn't tow much if I was anyways.

Either way, its nice to see nomadic goodness in action!

hisworker - 1-10-2009 at 09:53 AM

surfer jim, i will let you know if we need to store there.

I'm in San Diego, Diver has been to my house in Mission Bay if secure storage is needed for the trailer.

Diver, the truck and trailer left El Rosario this morning on tow. Talked to them at 9:30Am and were at San Quintin. Will talk with them again when they get to Ensenada. Mrs. Diver, kids and dogs are also on the road with the Trotters.
For future needs of anyone, excellent tow service is beeing provided by Enrique Salcedo Towing from San Quintin, phone (616) 165-2280, cel is (616) 163-0088, reasonable rates and you can pay them with a credit card.

ALL WELL DONE, FDT and TROTTERS
Nomads are a great crew.......

TMW - 1-10-2009 at 11:55 AM

That's great news and a great tip on a towing co.

ELINVESTIG8R - 1-10-2009 at 12:09 PM

I did not want to chime in during Diver's ordeal because I was not in a position to help and did not wish to clutter up the request for help forum. Now that Diver and family have been rescued all I want to say is Baja Nomad has some great folks who really care. I swear I am proud to be a member.

Keri - 1-10-2009 at 01:26 PM

I opened this in it's own thread because I also wanted the people who haven;t been reading this to see it also. Diver sorry I did see it sooner.k
I have been reading all the problems diver has been having trying to get his truck fixed and trying to get home. Sorry I didn't see it sooner so I could have given him this info. This is for anyone traveling Baja. It is Mexican Auto club. It's $99 to $109 a year or you can buy it daily also. Fantastic service Autoclubofmexico.com It can give you great peace of mind and security while you are traveling Baja. Check them out. From the US 866-639-4869 From Mex 001-866-639-4869.k:yes:

fdt - 1-10-2009 at 02:06 PM

@1PM they are at the Ensenada toll booth.

Paulina - 1-10-2009 at 03:10 PM

Very cool. Thanks fdt for keeping us updated. Dern is hoping that when the problem with Diver's truck is solved, that he'll follow up with the info.

My dad always said that FORD stood for First On Race Day, but we want to be prepared for when the fix or repair daily jinx should hit us.

If there's another part we need and don't have, then we want to add it to the tool box.

P<*)))>{

Sharksbaja - 1-10-2009 at 03:15 PM

Well at least they are making it back safe. It's probably some stupid problem that can only be resolved by folks in the know.

btw, did he ever put a code reader on that thing? I'd like to know what it says.

surfer jim - 1-10-2009 at 03:36 PM

Good news so far....still have to get truck fixed so it is not over yet....I think a lot of NOMADS are following this....I guess it could have happened to any of us......

BajaGringo - 1-10-2009 at 04:12 PM

Dropped off the part on Thursday afternoon and hung around to wait to see if that would fix it. Really was hoping for a happy ending to this and see the family be able to get on with their vacation but it was not meant to be. I put my code reader on Diver's truck but it wouldn't read. Just kept telling me "link error". I have never been confused with a good mechanic so I was just left wondering if the problem was connected somehow...

The upside for me was that I got to meet Ira, Pam and the rest of the Diver clan - what nice folks they are! I really hope they get the problem fixed and life gives them a super great vacation next time around. They really deserve it!!!

Sharksbaja - 1-10-2009 at 04:29 PM

The 6.0 starting in 2003 switch to the obdII CAN protocol.

You will need to update your scanner.

BajaGringo - 1-10-2009 at 04:45 PM

It is brand new and I have used it on a 2007 F250

Good job Nomads!

Barry A. - 1-10-2009 at 05:05 PM

The problem with Diver's truck is that it is RED!!!! Even the border patrol is looking for RED trucks------I am sure there is a connection there.

Barry

fdt - 1-10-2009 at 05:33 PM

I waited at the hwy just as you enter Tijuana after talking to Enrique Salceda on his cel and he told me the were between Rosarito and Tijuana. At 2:20Pm I spoted the tow truck with the red F350 on top and trailer in tow and got on the road and guided them to the pre arranged parking lot downtown were we were met by a fellow Nomad that was there to tow the trailer back. So at this time all has been done, they are at the border wait pulling the trailer and will return to get the truck to the downtown parking as soon as the Ford dealers re open on Monday morning.

Packoderm - 1-10-2009 at 05:47 PM

We passed by there, but we were on the internet and loggin onto Nomads, so I was not able to offer any help. I'm so sorry you are going through all this. It makes me feel so good to see all the help you are getting. Anyway, I probably wouldn't have recognized you with your full beard. I count my lucky stars every time I make it down and back in my junky vehicles. I'm sure my time is going to come any time. Godspeed for you.

Notice the #'s here are the same (minus the leading "44")?

I believe it was noted that the truck and trailer were being dropped in Tijuana by the tow operator and heading across the border by other means.

Still the same for all of the above. Can not cross the border and cel is the same but remember there are diferent ways to call a cel in México, 044 from land to cel or cel to cel localy (within same area code) 045 from land to cel or cel to cel long distance (outside area code) and 01152 1 from US to a MX cel.

Update on the Divers

DianaT - 1-10-2009 at 11:16 PM

At approximately 8p.m. we delivered Mrs. Diver the two children, two Diver dogs and all the left over pizza to the Chula Vista RV park where Diver and the person who met FDT and Diver in Tijuana and towed the trailer over the border were waiting.

They cannot go back to Tijuana for the truck until Monday----the locked lot is closed on Sunday, but then again, so are the Ford Dealers. Truck will either be on a flat bed trailer or towed, but it will get back.

John and I had a really good time.

Now our big dog, Tom, was a little horrified because he had to ride in the back of the truck (with camper shell) with the two Diver dogs---he was a little outraged at being treated like a dog! Didn't matter that he had his big fluffy dog bed. So spoiled.

Our little dog rode on my lap because we were afraid she might cause trouble and try to eat the big labs.

Good to have all of them back safe and sound----now about that red truck----

Diane

fdt - 1-10-2009 at 11:31 PM

Glad to hear that they are back together and that the labs didn't get eaten by the Trotter dogs. ;D

One more to add---with the cell phones in Mexico, the area code is determined by where the cell phone is purchased. Example. I bought my in Bahia Asuncion and Diver bought his in El Rosario so even when he was in El Rosario, and we were in San Qunitin, I still had to call him like it was long distance using the 045 instead of 044.

Now that should have cleared it all up.:lol::lol::lol:

BTW, I keep a cheat sheet with me at all times or I would never be able to call anyone.

Hoping that the problem with the truck is not real serious.

Good job Trotters, and other Nomads, what a super group of people. Sorry we could not help, if our Suburban did not have similar malady, we could have used it to help. We are back in Canada now and sorely missed our Diver family this trip.
Now for the good news Diver, you have used up all of your Baja bad luck travelling, and some Washington State bad luck as well, so you are now good to go in the future for a long time. Noboby got hurt, so remember our credo, life is an adventure, live it. You did and now you deserve some good luck for a long time.
Cheers from Tia Juanita and the family as well.

Yes, except in the US you just have to dial the area code. With a Mexican cell phone, besides the area code, you have to remember weather to dial 044 or 045 first if you are in Mexico.

If called a cell from the US, you don't use the 044 or 045----instead, it is as FDT said 011-52-1 then the area code and the number. The extra "1" designates that you are calling a cell phone and not a land line.

I like my cheat sheet.:yes:

Hi Diver, Mr. Gypsy here....
Just read all the posts and feel for you and your family in your adventure. Very sorry we couldnt be there to help you guys out, but have to mention I'm totally floored on the outpouring of help from fellow nomads, my hat is off to you all
When you get your truck finally fixed up, please post the results. Very curious on what all went wrong with the truck. We have retired the landcruiser (gas) and have gone to diesel aswell with the new dodge 2500 (well its new to us... its a 2006 that doesnt need the low sulfur diesel) and if it is fuel issues of any sort would like to know about it.
Hope all is well, and hopefully see you guys in the new year!

Mr. Gypsy

They will get the truck from Tijuana tomorrow and hopefully the problem will be discovered quickly, and will not be serious.

Since his laptop died, he can't take advantage of wi-fi at the Chula Vista RV park---so, it may take a little longer, but I know he plans on reporting all the details.

Diver and Mrs. Diver had very good things to say about you---said you were not anything like your avatar.

They have one of our cars so they can get around---Mrs. Diver and kids rode bikes to the Chula Vista Nature center---which BTW is a nice and interesting place to visit, and today plans are for them to go to the San Diego Zoo---so they are making the best of it and having fun!

But they are anxious to get the verdict on the truck.

What an ordeal! Great that the Baja Nomad family is everywhere... Very kind of the Trotters for all they are doing, too!

BajaGringo - 1-14-2009 at 01:01 PM

The fact that it is taking them this long tells me that it was not something simple. Either that or the dealer's service department is backed up...

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

I've been thinking we should hold a Nomad of the Year award...and I want to nominate FDT!

Not to detract from FDT in the slightest, but me thinks there was a larger than normal cast of heros who went over & above in this particular saga!!:bounce:

A lot of us did try to help but Fernando was always the common thread, keeping it all connected and trying to get these nice folks back on the road...

Fernando is always the first person to offer and extend help.

BajaGringo - 1-14-2009 at 02:54 PM

I am also amazed at all that you guys have done in helping these nice folks Diane. My hat is off to all of you.

So when are we going to get a mechanics report? I really am curious now...

shari - 1-14-2009 at 02:54 PM

I fully acknowledge it was an excellent group effort but Ferna has been there for all and anyone who needs help...always...all ways...thanks to all involved.

Waiting, waiting, waiting. I hope they have heard by now.

We are planning on all going out for Thai food tonight and Mrs. Diver said she hoped it would be a celebration dinner.

BajaGringo - 1-14-2009 at 03:00 PM

I'll make a cadillac margarita and raise my glass as well...

:):):)

fdt - 1-14-2009 at 03:37 PM

I think it's all been a great effort by many Baja Nomads to help another in need. When is the party?

DENNIS - 1-14-2009 at 03:39 PM

Ferna...You da man.

Update

DianaT - 1-14-2009 at 05:27 PM

Just spoke with Mrs. Diver--no absolute news on the Truck yet---dealer says they think they know the problem and it may be ready tomorrow morning. They want it DEFINITELY fixed before they leave. They don't want any open questions. Gees, I wonder why.

So we are all off for Thai food soon.

Diane

BajaGringo - 1-14-2009 at 05:32 PM

When a dealer tells you that, here is the "real" translation:

We don't have any idea what it is but we are working with a factory rep who is researching the problem and will call our service manager back in the morning.

I speak from experience on this one...

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Hook - 1-14-2009 at 09:38 PM

Agreed, Baja Gringo.

It's something that is not showing up on the computer and they are clueless. I am guessing that it's fuel related now. Maybe the HPOP that pressurizes the injectors.

Well, my mom should be here on Friday...maybe we should have a Bahia Asuncion party here in San Diego. I know we'll have great weather. Ask the Divers and let us know.

Zac

DianaT - 1-14-2009 at 09:50 PM

Well, Thai food was good, Diver spirits are good and hopeful. Mrs. Diver and Diver kids loved the San Diego Zoo.

Dealer is talking fuel injector, but still testing.

Zac,

Before i read this, I sent you a u2u with Diver's cell phone number. He wants you to call him.

Or maybe they are gone. Maybe they got a trailer hitch and hooked up their trailer to our Toyota Echo. Afterall, his trailer is a 21 foot Prowler Light.:lol::lol:

We are sure the sight of a little Echo in front of his trailer is giving pause to the other RV people there.

Have not talked to them yet today---sure hope the mystery is solved.

It's like watching a two week long miniseries and now we're all waiting for the final episode. I even popped some popcorn...

OK, I called and talked with one of the Diver kids---dad was not there.

She reported that the dealer has a part that they are going to install and then test drive the truck tomorrow and they hope that will do it!

Keep the popcorn popping, it ain't over yet.
