Viva Yaqui Taco ?

elgatoloco - 1-16-2009 at 10:47 AM

Heard a word about a sign on the wall at Yaqui saying closed permanently? Don't know if something lost in translation or...........?

Heading down tomorrow for some golf, tequila and tacos. May have to get the tacos elsewhere.

If there is anybody left in Rosarito have you seen/heard/witnessed anything about Yaqui first hand?

Perones!!! It what's for breakfast!! :saint:

There are so many empty available storefronts on the main blvd- that maybe they are just moving to a better location. I hope that's it (although I never liked beans in my carne asada quesadillas). I'll do a drive by today and let you know...

BajaGringo - 1-16-2009 at 11:09 AM

I would be surprised as the last few times I was there they seemed to be staying busy. I like the beans but just not in my taco, so I just ask to have them served on the side...

, :yes::yes::yes:

David K - 1-16-2009 at 11:17 AM

Say it isn't so!

Where else do they make dog barking and cat sounds as they chop the meat!!!???

I didn't think I would like the beans on the taco as well... but was amazed at how good they are! Baja Angel doesn't care for the cheese, so hers are 'sin queso'... otherwise, we loved getting a meal there!

So get the beans AND cheese on the side, dab a little salsa and picante on it and you have a free side order of Chili beans!

Well, almost...

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

... Yes, and I still take my friends there and just ask for no beans on my tacos. It's closed one day a week maybe you just hit it on a closed day... If any Taco stand is consistent with business- it's them.

I will never complain about the many options for great street-side food in Rosarito. Tacos Manuel and Tacos el Zurdo are both great. The guy (sergio) that sells incredible mexican-style hot dogs at night next to the new Carne Mart on the Blvd is a decnt surfer too. Not to be out done are the two TJ Juniors locations- it's sit down dining mostly but you get a free cup of soup and the four squeeze-bottle sauces they put on your table are incredible. Try the combinatino fish taco plate- fish tacos three different ways! Glenn will love those!

I've never noticed the number of fat grams on the taco wrapper- so it must be zero.

I like that analogy. It will now be my new mantra. If it don't say it must be zero!!!

Thank you for the live at five update. I know that seņor Yaqui has usually shut down for a time around the holidaze and when it was reported to me that the sign said "permanently" I was skeptical. :smug:

Last time I was there Yaqui was talking to his contractor about expanding the little service building in the back and the fact that he does not rely on the tourist for his core business means he should be able to weather the downturn.

I regret to say that my first thought was that he had run into similar issues as other successful businessmen in our beloved Baja Norte/Gold Coast/Paradise by The Border region and was forced to leave town. Can you say Iggy?

Tomorrow I will be introducing a couple of greenhorn amigos from back east (Ohio & Toronto) to the wonderful world of Yaqui, liquid sensimilla and golf by the sea! :saint:

We may even hit La Fonda so they can get the full "run the gauntlet" treatment.

If only the weather out here would improve!

Buy tequila futures!!

I am going to go all technical on you.

Tacos have no beans. :o

Perones have beans. :smug:

I am sure between the beans and the beers my wife will be glad she is not along for the ride.

Thank you again for the in town get down no frown not a clown first persona update! You made my day. If you get by there again could you make a reservation for three? :dudette:

Viva Yaqui!

BajaGeoff - 1-16-2009 at 05:30 PM

Viva Yaqui indeed! My stomach was going to be very sad if they had in fact closed their doors!

BajaGringo - 1-16-2009 at 05:35 PM

Just came back and had a couple myself. And it's only 25 minutes to five - happy hour!!!

I don't know who complained about your real avatar- but these new guys are just too scary. And what time do they close now? I though they closed early afternoon for some reason.

Please let me know the exchange rate at La Fonda if you don't run out of tequila first. (hint: bring pesos).

BajaGringo - 1-16-2009 at 07:20 PM

Not sure what time they close as I usually have lunch there. Reading my prior post I should have made it clear that I had a couple of tacos but from Manuels. Didn't want to make the drive to that part of town today as I had others things to do.

As far as the exchange rate at La Fonda I am not sure what it is right now. I always pay for everything in pesos and just avoid those screwy exchange rates some folks are offering. I saw a Pemex yesterday still only giving 10.50. Those attendants can make some great $$$ just in the exchange.

Not sure what to do with my avatar. Nobody seems to like any of them...

:(:(:(

I always enjoyed...

Mexray - 1-16-2009 at 07:43 PM

...tossing a few morsels to the Pero's on the roof of the buildings next door to Yaqui's...:o

Bajahowodd - 1-16-2009 at 07:50 PM

Sorry, but I thought perones was an Italian beer or a condition noted about Bill Clinton's penis.

Bob H - 1-16-2009 at 08:20 PM

OH, had some heart palpatations when I saw the subject line on this thread. Thank goodness it is not true. Love those perones there!
Bob H

Bajahowodd - 1-16-2009 at 11:37 PM

Let me in on this. Perones is a disease of the penis. Who loves that?

BajaGringo - 1-16-2009 at 11:44 PM

Let's just say that Bill was not a "straight" shooter....

:lol::lol::lol:

Bajahowodd - 1-16-2009 at 11:49 PM

So. Who'se up for some perones??

BajaGringo - 1-17-2009 at 12:37 AM

Which one do you go to? (There are 2)

elgatoloco - 1-17-2009 at 12:46 AM

I have heard good things about 2000. Someday I WILL make it there.

Viva Pesos!
Viva Perones!
Viva Tequila!

Hay que lastima!

Bajahowodd - 1-17-2009 at 12:47 AM

What's a perone? Please.

elgatoloco - 1-17-2009 at 12:51 AM

oversized flour tortilla
melted monterey jack
marinaded carne asada
frijoles de olla
fresh guacamole
homemade pico de gallo
squeeze of lime
shake of salt
radish on the side
swig of cold cerveza

PERONE!!!

Yaqui invented then perfected it!

Check it out!

What is interesting to watch after your order these is how fast they can put it all together. They slop it on there quickly, and it's messy and tasty for sure!!!!

That marinated carne asada is cooked right in front of you over mesquite, then they soak it more in more marinade in a big covered heated pot. They take it out, chop it all up on a big stump of wood, and then make up the perone.... unreal!

Taqueria 2000

I honestly couldn't tell the difference. But then it's been over a year since I've been to Yaqui. Taqueria 2000 is much easier to get in and out of especially now that the cuota exit is also an entrance. Exit and drive 3 blocks then reverse. The fewer Rosarito streets traveled the better 'cause the cops are predators. :fire:

I understand that 2000 is a bit cheaper but I couldn't swear to it.

I only know of one of them. The one on Calle Ensenada, or "the street off the dairy exit from the toll road" ... they've always been great. I prefer going to this one over Yaqui mainly because I tend to avoid the tourist area ... en donde esta el otro tacos 2000?

Another Tacos Manuel is on Benito Juarez across from the strip mall where "Coppel" and "Auto Zone" are. Tacos El Zurdo (even better IMHO) is on Benito Juarez at the light just after the McDonalds intersection light. That have one over-stuffed carne asada burrito there that would fill a bull.

Wow, they finally turned it into an entrance going southbound? That IS good news. It makes Taqueria 2000 more like a pit stop rather than a detour. I gotta make it a point to hit that on the way south. Heck there's even a new Pemex right there too if memory serves...one stop shop

BajaGringo - 1-18-2009 at 12:48 PM

Another option is to just head two blocks north from Yaqui's to tacos EL Gerente. The owner of the place is the guy that originally set up Yaqui and makes them the exact same way.

In fact most of the locals go to El Gerente, not to Yaqui...

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

I love that inside info on the taco stuff... The only fast food I eat is In-n-Out BUrgers and carne asada burritos from any San Diego taco shop with a "to's" Robertos, Albertos, Alibertos, Just to's ... whatever in it.

But... I find something intersting to enjoy in every streetside taco shop in Rosarito. The sit down dinin places recently... not so much.
