Finally Got Home !! Buy the Book and DVD !

Diver - 1-21-2009 at 11:10 AM

Just wanted to let all who may be concerned (curious ?) know that we arrived in our snowless driveway yesterday about an hour past dark. We feverishly started unpacking so things wouldn't freeze between the house and camper; loading big roughtotes and repacking clothes inside....
We had gotten most of the important and freezible into the house and had just started dinner ...... when the power went out.
We are talking really, really dark darkness.
190lbs of frightened yellow labs came running out of their room ! :wow:
I'm immediately just adapting to the next bump in our continuing bad road. I go out to get the generator and check on gas; down to the barn to get a few more cans; might have to get some more gas tomorrow....
The power came back on one hour later and has been good since !!
Dinner in our dinning room, surrounded by our hills, trees and sky; not a bad place to be, really.

About the truck ..... you'll have to wait for the REST of the story !!
At this point we only know that there was overheating involved, a possible cam shaft sensor problem, 2 sensors, the IDI computer and a front-end alignment. I think it's best to bring the truck to an independant diesel mechanic for an opinion before I talk to my dealer. The Chula Vista dealer had doubts as to whether the overheating caused all of the rest of the failures.

.

Glad to hear you're alive and well, Diver. Keep the Baja faith.

BajaGringo - 1-21-2009 at 12:45 PM

Really glad to hear you guys made it home safe and sound Ira. Too bad this vacation didn't work out but I just know you guys must have accumulated lots of good karma points for the next trip down.

Wishing you all the best...

BajaNomads ROCK !!

Just a bit about the people;

When our truck died about an hour before dark on an uphill grade 30 minutes south of El Rosario, the first and only truck to stop was there within minutes containing TW and Shirley with their tow strap in hand. Not only did they tow us off the road and onto the shoulder at the top of the hill, after thinking about us for a few minutes they returned to ferry my family down to Bajacactus. Once that was done, they decided to return to make sure I was safe even passed twice to make sure that I hadn't backed off a cliff - there was no cliff !!
I loved TW's comment when Shirley asked "Where do yo think he went ?"
TW said, "Maybe he got tired of the wife and kids and kept going south ?!"
Priceless and not far off either !!
I had gotten the truck running for it's last long sprint back to the Bajacactus and somehow we had missed each other.

After unsuccessfully trying to convince TW and Shirley to stay and let us buy dinner, we headed to Mama's. After elaxing to a table, I noticed a man and young boy sitting near us and something rang a bell. Took me a few minutes to figure it out until I asked " Are you Igor ?" Yes it was, having dinner with young Alex who is getting older all the time. Alex has that "growing up", kind of nice-kid thing going on really good. He is charming and will soon be killing the ladies.
We saw Igor the next morning but I promised not to divulge any details about his unuasual morning attire.

Later that morning I had time to call Antonio who was very kind in offering any help he could. Although his people tried, there wasn't much they could do. I also got a call from Antonio later in the week when he received the room report and saw that we were still there. One of his maintenance folks drove me to find a mechanic and the room attendants were charming; it's not a bad to place to be stranded for a few days - 8 is too many !

Later that day, I walked to the internet cafe at Mama's and posted on Nomads about our location and all.
The posts and offerings were amazing. I just found even more that came to our email but unfortunately we couldn't access email until we got home.

FDT picked up the phone and called me.
Now, I have never met Fernando and was quite surprised at his offer to help. At the time, we thought we were a fuel filter away from being back on the road and he wished us well.

With a heads-up from FDT,we met Doug Means coming into the Bajacactus that evening. We shared some very nice conversation about many subjects in common and he left before the sun was high enough to read my scribbled note. Still very nice to meet Doug and his family who I cannot praise enough for his enabling of BajaNomads and his many efforts in Baja.

The next day, we called FDT to arrange shipping of a Ford part to El Rosario which he arranged masterfully. He not only is a fluent spanish go-between but also a competent problem solver. As our saga continued, FDT managed the pick-up of another part and the delivery to BajaGringo who was heading south.

BajaGringo was actually already south of TJ but back-tracked to pick up our package and then passed his San Quintin destination to bring it to us in El Rosario. Ron spent much longer than he had planned, trying to help with the diagnosis gone bad. Another Nomads just really, really wanting to help. A very nice man.

We had also run into Steve and Debby on their way home with a huge flatbed and a serious looking rock crawler. Unfortunately, we couldn't think of a way to take them up on a trailer ride to SD.

Time to call Fernando again; we needed a tow to the border.
All arranged through a reputable agency in San Quintin by phone - Viva Fernando !
The next call was to the Trotters who had offered to come down and ferry the gang with dogs to SD. They agreed readily and also conveyed offers from another "former" Nomad to help with the hauling.

The very next morning, John and Diane arrived early as did the tow truck from San Quintin. We loaded up the family with Trotters and the truck and camper and I with the tow truck. Next stop TJ for me and Chula Vista for the rest.

The Trotters were amazing. My kids said that driving back with them was just like driving with the grandparents (who they are very comfortable with), John drives fast and Diane talks enough to keep them occupied !
Wonderful, warm and generous people; they even lent us their little car for a few days ! We hope to enjoy many repayment dinners with our Asuncion neighbors in the future.

I had an interesting ride as the driver pulled over a few miles north of San Quintin to pick up his girlfriend for the ride. This was definitely not the wife but he managed to keep us on the road through all the kissing and thigh squeezing.

As we pull through TJ, a car appears with a waving FDT and leads us through the maze to a secure parking lot near his home. Also waiting for us at the parking lot is the mystery ex-Nomad with F350 ready to tow our camp trailer across the border to the RV park - ROBERTO !!!

This guy is in the amazing catagory when it comes to NICE. He hooked up our trailer and headed through the TJ and border maze like a pro, getting us to the campground before the Trotters and my gang arrived with cold pizza.
AND he volunteered to return on Monday morning to get my truck back across the border, to the dealer for repairs. Due to a few oops's on my part and a problem getting the truck on the trailer, we finally arrived at the dealer after closing and left the whole thing on their doorstep.
I had never met Roberto before but he went WAY out of his way to help a stranded Nomad. As Shari would say, ROBERTO is the BOMB !!

Many more Nomads and more to the story coming up soon !
.

fdt - 1-21-2009 at 03:50 PM

We are so happy to know you are home now. "Por fin".
Also now that the secret is out as to the mistery nomad, I have to agree with you Diver, Roberto is great! I had an opportunity to travel with him to San Pedro Martir and visit with Nomad astrobaja last year and it was a great trip. Roberto is a true friend.

OK, secret is out. Believe me, we really enjoyed meeting Roberto---he is one super person. We hope to be seeing him again.

And, Fernando, well, we WILL meet you in person one of these days.

Welcome home Diver!

Wish we knew you were at Baja Cactus (1-2-09)... perhaps we would have met that night before the staff sent us to Turista Motel because they were full?

Next time... when the Ford is all better!

Nice to hear that even former Nomads offered help... that's the Baja spirit!

What is that supposed to mean? I know a lot of non-Nomads that help... sounds like a lot helped Diver

fishingmako - 1-21-2009 at 06:26 PM

I'm sure glad I became a Baja Nomad, when you travel you have the insurance of knowing someone is available to help you , what a security blanket that is, why aren't all people like this? If everyone just would help the next person asking for help, we wouldn't have all the rage that goes with the problem, most people though just say OH WELL someone will help them, I'm too busy or? but just think when something happens to you remember, what goes around comes around, and If you truly believe that, watch what happens in your life, It will help you to be a much better person.

Diver, question what was the cost of towing from Baja Cactus to TJ?
and what was the part? since I have the same exact Truck and going to be heading South all the way to Cabo, be nice just in case, glad your home, I'm sure this was a night mare for a while.

David K - 1-21-2009 at 06:31 PM

norte, it was supposed to mean just that... non-nomads helped to.

TMW - 1-21-2009 at 07:44 PM

Diver, I'm glad you and your family made it home safe and sound. Almost everyday Shirley would ask how you were doing etc. Now I can tell her all is well the trip is over, you're home at last.

Hey, the Diver clan has been through an ordeal, and no one can blame them if a little typo about help from Nomad family and the Trotters ..",too." comes through.

I had to read it twice to see the mis-insinuation.

I feel confident in assuming the intent of Diver's post is inclusive and with special mention to the Trotters.

I'm not going to get hung up on a typo, I'm going enjoy the sucesses of the storey.

Diver clan,
Glad your home, sorry you're not still in the warm sun where the rest of us stuck-in-the-cold nomads would like to be. And I am very glad to have seen via the posts of all the efforts of everyone to help stranded travelers.

pay it forward..................................

Steve&Debby - 1-21-2009 at 10:15 PM

Diver,
Glad to here you finally made it home.I think I now how to fix your problem with your pickup;

1 Remove radiator cap
2 carefully roll broken truck back
3 drive new truck under radiator cap
4 push broken truck off cliff :o:O:lol:

I dunno S&;D.... the full insurance/parkinglot plan sounds better financially...$$$$

Opps, it was not a Diver post---it was a post from David K

The Diver family are like family--Mrs. Diver is a really super person, the kids are great and Diver? well, OK, he is OK too even if he thinks I need to learn to really like sushi.:lol:

And, he mentioned that the kids saw us as like their grandparents, a compliment we appreciate---enjoy being grandparents to those two kids, but we are NOT old enough to be Diver''s parents. :P

Really sorry that it was not clear.

My bad, too, I didn't go back and read who posted what.

BajaNuts - 1-21-2009 at 11:44 PM

Just a quick follow up,

I believe that those involved in this saga acted as most of us would have if we had been in the position to help. I know I and my family would have helped in any way possible. The key being..."those who were in a position to help". Most of us (and I'm referring to humankind as a whole) will jump in and help. We have been blessed to read about a recent saga with many heros.

Here's good wishes to all and to all.......a good night's sleep with your favorite pillow!

You are entitled to your interpretation and your opinion---look up the meaning of too, the one with the two o's. It is the same as "also"---or in addition to.

We think the wording was quite Freudian, and with that, we got a good laugh.

Meantime, we will choose with whom we chose to be family, so to speak.

Please do let us know what the final diagnosis was, as well as the solution. I agree completely with your plan to use an independent diesel mechanic; I have heard and experienced good things from indies.

Yep, I told Roberto that he is missed by many around here, but I don't think there is a chance he will return. At least we finally got to meet him and are staying in contact.

PLEASE........PLEASE..............PLEASE!

At least let us know what year Diver's truck is so I can finally tune out of this disaster if it has no further relevance to me.

Diver - 1-23-2009 at 08:19 AM

My F350 is a 2004 6.0L with automatic.
Some very interesting info on the Ford and Dieselstop forums.

So far I have found the following;

The codes referred to cam/crank sensor circuits and to FICM programming.
Ford states that the FICM can be damaged by low voltage ie when you have bad batteries or a bad alternator - mine was replaced last month at my hometown dealer.
The SD dealer did not try a retune on the FICM and would not give me the "core". They just replaced it.
My turbo was replaced at my dealer last year and I have complained about leaks but they say it's normal. I get bad fumes inside the cab when using the heat/defrost. The turbo leaks onto the FICM causing it to soot and heat up - another Ford stated concern to damage the FICM.
The truck needs to be reflashed and maybe more as it does not run as strong and shift the same as it used to.
There will be much more to this story .....

Diver - 1-23-2009 at 08:28 AM

Skipjack,

Methinks Alex was looking at my Isabel in the first picture as well.
Although I have been descibed as a visual oddity, even by my own kids !

Unfortunately my not-little-any-more teen daughter is looking at older guys over 5'8" these days - it's killing me !
My wife thought Alex was to-die-for cute !!

Now about the other guy .... I wouldn't have recognized him without his trusty accomplice but I'm glad we made the connection !
.

Diver - 1-23-2009 at 08:34 AM

Another funny connection;

Last year in Asuncion we met Awfulart and Alice when they camped near Shari's house and joined in the holiday feasting. I had a distant view of his truck and camper in my memory.
I was standing in the rear parking area of teh Bajacactus when I caught a distant view of a passing rig. Something clicked in my head and I told my wife that I thought that was Awfulart's rig and was going to the Pemex to find out.

"Are you AWFULart ?"
Turns out is WAS Art and Alice and we got to reintroduce ourselves while they filled their tank.
Nice folks that we hope to see in Asuncion - not El Rosario - next year !
.

Hook - 1-23-2009 at 08:40 AM

Thank you, Diver.

Diver - 1-23-2009 at 09:48 AM

Now some photos;

Overheating heading up the Grapevine; I 5 southbound.
We even heated the distilled water before mixing with the pure antifreeze after waiting 45 minutes for the thing to cool.

DSCN7143.JPG - 44kB

Diver - 1-23-2009 at 09:55 AM

And here we sat ... and sat ... and sat.
The rear parking area at the Bajacactus.

We got the room on the second floor closet to the truck and used the camper kitchen for many meals. The dogs slept in their truck as usual.

The Bajacactus was very nice. Our room was $45 for 2 king beds and a loft with 2 single beds. It's one of only 2 rooms at this "high" price and well worth it. The shower is wonderful with lot's of hot water after the morning rush. We also had 2 partial days with no water; no biggy, like we were in a rush ? Housekeeping was also great. Wonderful matresses and pillows !
Only complaint is the noise from the road traffic going very late and starting very early; and those speed bumps !

Oops, the photo is too large. I will have to work on it.

Santiago - 1-26-2009 at 08:46 AM

Everyone I know who owns a diesel has horror stories about their truck - why the heck do you guys keep buying them?

bigboy - 1-26-2009 at 09:12 AM

I'm with Santiago on the problems of newer diesels. The older ones were very reliable but once the engines had to meet tough emission standards the problems began.

My brother and his son have both had major problems that ruined their vacations. At least they were in the states and could be towed to dealers and fixed under warranty.

I'll stick with my Excursion powered with the V10 gas engine. No problems at all and I my larger boat weighs in at 9,000 plus pounds and always gets better than 10mpg towing. As high as 15 not towing on long trips.

bigboy - 1-26-2009 at 08:04 PM

Whistler................no problem with the transmission. I had the fluid changed at 35,000 miles and it now has 42,000 miles on the clock.

I regularly tow a 7,000 pound boat to Ensenada and I use the Tecate road both ways to avoid the traffic at Tijuana. On that road I always lock out O.D. and avoid excessive downshifting on the mountain roads. So far so good.

I leave a 89 Bronco at my house in Mexico. It has the C6 transmission and has 249,000 miles on it with no drive train issues. I also have a daily driver 95 Bronco with 190,000 miles with the same results. Both Broncos have seen extensive off roading and towing duties. I love my Fords and none of them have ever left me stranded.
