Can anybody bring a cat north?

Packoderm - 1-24-2009 at 08:22 PM

My brother Dan would like to adopt Spooky the cat who is at Shari's place in Asuncion. If somebody would bring Spooky across the border, Dan would be happy to pay any costs incurred such as vaccinations or whatnot. He says he will travel within California if somebody will bring Spooky that close. Anybody?

Describe spooky

Dave - 1-24-2009 at 08:38 PM

I got lots of cats. I'll even paint one to match, put it in a box and mail it (not insured, sorry) anywhere.

Packoderm - 1-24-2009 at 08:49 PM

Thanks for the offer Dave, but my brother was impressed with Spooky.

DianaT - 1-24-2009 at 08:53 PM

Yes, in Bahia Asuncion there are many animals that need rescue, but there are also many, many animals in local shelters in California.

There are even more today who are victims of the foreclosure epidemic. So if your brother wants a cat, why not adopt a local needy cat who is facing certain death if not adopted.

He already has one cat that is not that sociable, and he says that Spooky's being very friendly would complement her. And I guess he just likes Spooky. With Lucy, I didn't really care about the situation in which she was living; I just liked her and knew I had to take her home. Dan knew right off the bat that he liked Spooky, but our attention was on Lucy at the time.

Well, if that is the only cat he will consider, I wish you luck.

I hope Lucy is doing well in her new home.

Packoderm - 1-24-2009 at 09:14 PM

Lucy is in my lap as I'm typing this. I can't imagine a better pooch. She is so gentle and really complements my somewhat of a roughneck other dog Rita. With our two cats, we now have a big, happy animal family.

Trust me...

Uh, I don't think so; my brother has only one eye.

I assume it was not meant to be offensive, but it reads that way. IMHO, the post was not funny and the way it read, it was in poor taste.

Legs------I am sorry but you are going to have to explain that one to me--------what in the world is "offensive" about Shari's post?? :?::?::?::?:

Barry

Barry

DianaT - 1-25-2009 at 11:18 AM

Maybe it is not offensive to you, and maybe you are reading it in a different way, but saying that Spooky has a brother as as President made my jaw drop open---just couldn't believe I was reading that.

Again, maybe you don't find that in poor taste, but some do. IMHO, it was probably meant to be humorous, but sometimes that doesn't work for everyone.

David K - 1-25-2009 at 11:23 AM

Is Spooky HALF black, too????

So what??? In Mexico, race humor is very common! What about those Chinese fast food places that use a logo of a slant eyed, buck toothed person?

longlegsinlapaz - 1-25-2009 at 11:29 AM

Barry, the black cat's name is the same racial repugnant derogatory slang term used frequently in reference to blacks...referring to that black cat as a brother to the president of the USA, or to any black person would be in poor taste to me. And obviously to the others who U2u'd me to look at the post. I'm disappointed they chose not to speak up themselves, but that's their right.

It's possible that it's a term that's never been used in your presence, but to me, it's just as offensive as other derogatory terms/racial slur used against Asians, Italians, Japanese or any other nationality or group of people.

Edited brother in place of erroneously having said cousin in original response

nevadacitynurse - 1-25-2009 at 11:31 AM

This ought to be good.....

Barry A. - 1-25-2009 at 11:33 AM

Thanks Diane----------but I still am not sure what the "offensive" part is-----------if Spooky is a black cat, then I guess I see what Shari meant (??), and fail to find anything offensive about that---------I am pretty sure that the Nation has moved on about the subject of our new President being "black", and it is now a non-issue---------we as a Nation voted, and now we have a new President-------period-------------black, yellow, red, white, brown, etc. is behind us now, hopefully never to be an "issue" again-------at least for me and my friends it won't be.

I doubt that there was ANYTHING derogatory that Shari intended, but of course I really can't know what is in her head-----------she seems like a very sweet person to me, from her many posts. I thought is was funny-----sounds like something Jay Leno would say, and Jay is one of the "good guys", to me.

Just my "take".

Thanks for your view on the subject, tho.

Barry

shari - 1-25-2009 at 11:37 AM

OMG...sorry sorry sorry...certainly wasnt meant to be offensive...guess I've been living in mexico too long...her name Spooky (not spook) wasnt given to her because she's black...it's because she's well....spooky as in scary halloween cat type spooky and she's so weird...NOT BLACK...well ummm...yes she happens to be black but I didn't even THINK of it in THOSE terms....wow, this is soooo weird...all those U2U's flying back and forth and jaws dropping over for a misunderstanding...REALLY folks...i was just thinking of her being black...and didnt even relate the work spooky to some derogatory name. So I have deleted the thread...NOW would you all please do the same in your quote boxes so I'm not linched!...oooops, guess I shouldnt use that word either then....so I am not burned at the nomad stake...(ooops, sorry all you witches out there...or is wicca people more politically correct these days).....honest to goddess...it was in jest...and fully supportive of your new president.

Oh my golly....I also had no idea that the word brother was unacceptable to some of you too....my oh my...listen up...I was raised with african canadians, dated some, had ALOT of fun with lots of my african canadian pals...hug with Jamacans all through university and the word brother and sister have been used all the time in a positive sense....it was just a joke about our cat being comfortable in the USA....I apologize a billion trillion times and it was NOT meant to be offensive to african americans or whatever I am supposed to call people of color (brownish) there....geesh dianne, I thought you knew me better than that.

Easy, easy---someone sure has you in a knot--phew. Political correctness has nothing to do with it nor does politics. Get a grip.

Some people, and more than have posted here, found the way that post was worded to be in bad taste and others found it to be nothing----just a matter of opinion. No one accused anyone of being anything.

As I said in before, I was sure it was meant to be humorous. Would it be better to not confront the issue openly and just let many think it was meant to be offensive?

Interesting, as to how when someone has an opinion with which someone else disagrees, the name calling begins and it keeps getting back to politics----really quite absurd, IMHO.

Never to be taken seriously.

Oh, I see where you were going with this. All is cool. My two cats, however, wait for me to pull in with my truck. Surprisingly, this happens even when their food dispenser isn't empty. My cats do seem to show love to me as they sit in their respective places on my recliner.

Oh yeah, please excuse me as I briefly interrupt the above conversations to ask again on my brother's behalf if anybody headed north via Asuncion could bring the kitty with you? It's a lot to ask, and I'd be very pleasantly surprised if it comes to fruition, but nothing ventured nothing gained they say. Thanks.

Obama is exactly as white as he is black. Now if I had a cat named "snowball", would I not be able to talk about it? If that doesn't make sense, neither does the second half of this thread. In defense of my SISTER Shari; she has a heart as big as all outdoors, seemed to me to be as "colorblind" as anyone I've met lately, and she speaks her truth without fear. Even so, after this, I imagine she'll be a bit more careful about calling "a spade a spade".:?:

Back on topic...Spooky actually loved ME the most, and the feeling was mutual.

Amen Perry....some people just take themselves a bit too serious. There are plenty of things and people around here that offend me but I don't go around talking about it or talking about how many u2us I received regarding the matter. It's easier just to move forward...

Zac

Yes Zac, it would have been the easy way to go, to just let many people think that the comment was meant in an offensive way. That would have been the easy way.

But perhaps it was better to put it out in the open instead of keeping it in the shadows. If people don't know what is being said and how something reads to many because it is the easy way to go, they don't have a chance to reply.

For anyone interesting in bringing the cat back, there is a petstore in Vizcaino that sells crates---at least they did before. It is located at the south end of town on the west side of the street---near the tomato place.

WHOA.......

All this over someone asking for a favor on Nomads.

Shari, for what it's worth, I had to re-read your post several times to figure out what had so many's panties in a wad, my mind also went to Halloween, and it reminded of a cat I had, his name was Slick because my son said he looked like an oil slick. I'm a huge cat lover (this might offend some, sorry) and I still got a big kick out of the book "101 uses for dead cats" seems the PC are on overdrive.

I know someone who named her (black) puppydog Barack Hussein Obama. I also know somebody who calls his cat Sh*thead--- oops! can i say sh*thead on BajaNomad??? They both love their animals... and their new President.

Actually, I thought Shari's turn-of-phrase sort of clever, and definately NOT OFFENSIVE.

And some fire equipment south.........

Firefighting clothes 4 Punta Banda need transporting

I had every intention of traveling south on the 30th to take this gear down to PBFD at La Jolla but due to needing money I will be working instead and then with school starting my schedule is booked for quite awhile........good for me but bad for discretionary time.
If anyone is interested in being a "mule" let me know.
It would take about just over 1/2 a toyota size truck bed if boxed.

Sounds like a great Nomad project.........shouldn't be that difficult.

can't help the kitty until July- but I do want to add to the list of unappropriate names-

we found a baby kitty at the dump, he's totally black (we've stepped on him many times while walking down the halls at night). Our son was a toddler at the time. The name choice was "SMOKEY" .....yaa...yaa how original! It took no time at all for the toddler version of "Smokey" to become "Smokers" pronounced "Smokerz".

Yea, that's really PC to be hanging at the soccer field talking about Smokers................

and we are a totally tobacco-free family!
