Does anyone know the current rules on auto importation? I know they were changed in the last 2 years to only allow a vehicle 10 years old to be imported but was wondering if they had relaxed those regulations.

There is no importation of any vehicles at this time, that could possibly change in Feb.

According to the NAFTA treaty, you can import anything older than 10 years old:

I spoke with a neighbor a few days ago that bought a car in San Diego to import to TJ. He was told he has to wait. Fits with what comitan says.

Anyone have an update on vehicle importation? I'm looking at a 2000 model vehicle that is currently in San Diego. If I could import it to MX without a lot of drama it would keep my lovely wife from having to drive it to New Mexico and back. I guess another question would be would I have to register it in my name in SD first, I'm buying it from a private party.....Thanks....dt

Strictly 2nd hand, so take it for what it's worth.

Last week I heard from a local attorney in La Paz that the restrictions are off right now.

We have gone the SD route on both our vehicles with no problems. Easy and will save you some sales tax and licensing fees. Lots of info on the forum if you do a search.

Both of our vehicles are U.S. registered with South Dakota plates rather than imported with Mexican plates.
