Highway 3

We just took the MX-3 road from Ensenada to Tecate. There is a lot of construction on the Ensenada side - they are making it four lanes now. It's a mess in the beginning, going North... but then after a few miles you are on the original road - but lots of pot holes. It's a mess. It looks like they have plans to 4-lane it all the way to Tecate, not sure.

Yes, lots of construction and it is a mess , but there is one good benefit from same. Our two recent trips north, we found far fewer big trucks on that highway than normal. Made it faster through the mountains.

The really nice thing is a short wait at the Tecate border crossing. No more than 30-minutes for us on Monday afternoon.

Thirty minutes on a Monday----that is a long wait for Tecate during the week. Heck, during the week we consider 10 minutes long.:lol:

Now we did have a 40 minute wait on a Saturday afternoon, but waiting in line in Tecate is so much easier. It is the only way we return anymore --- for us, it is well worth the backtrack to Imperial Beach.

I do wonder, however, once they widen that road if it will change and more people will use it---

Curious, did you notice fewer big trucks?

Supposed to become a major truck route.

With fours lane I should become a lot easier to drive and safer. No more macho drivers passing into the other lanes on blind curves.

Yes, there were not many big trucks! And I agree with you that once it's all finished I think a lot more people will use it.

We drove home that way on Jan. 3rd... Not a problem that Saturday afternoon... There was no sign of construction north of Guadalupe Valley... Perhaps that will be Phase 2?

There is still no sign of construction that far North. But, just after the turnoff from MX-1 it's terrible, especially in a cabover camper of if you are towing something. It's very very bumpy. There are steep dropoffs from the pavement (going North) and very narrow in some places. I was white knuckled a couple of times. If I had known about this I would not have taken that route in my cabover camper.

A wise detour to Tecate (if you don't want to have the construction mess)would be to stay on 1-D to Puerto Nuevo... exit to Mex. 1 to the Blvd. 2000 (just south of Foxploration/ Popotla)... then it is a great 4 lane highway that dumps you right onto the Tecate Toll road (2-D) or exit before there for the free road (2) to Tecate.
