The last time my Dad will be going to Baja. He is one of the pioneers, lots of stories.He may want to stay. Q is, if he needs meds, can he get them or should I get a supply before to take with us?

More details are needed for any good advice. Such as how old he is, what medications, and whether he's going to stay.

Sally, I agree with Bajahowodd, it depends on the area you plan on staying as to the local availability of various medications. Somewhere like La Paz, or Cabo is more likely to have the specific meds he needs than a smaller more remote area. If you can post the meds he takes, it's likely that other Nomads will know if they're available in a specific area. Would he stay here on his own, or would he have someone available to drive to get his meds if necessary? My 90-y/o mother was here in La Paz for 2 years & she was able to get the meds she needed locally. If he wants to stay in an area that doesn't currently stock what he needs, I'd try talking with the local farmicia to see if they'd be willing to start stocking what he needs.

We will be staying with mija, in between Cabo and San Jose.He takes Aricept and namenda and lots of vitamins.He is 85 yrs. old.He lost his wife(my Mom) of 64 yrs last April and really needs a change.I have a feeling he will want to stay longer than I can, just until it gets too hot for him.There will be plenty of people to care for him while he is there so that is not a main concern.Good idea, L.legs, I will have mija ask the local famacia if they carry/stock those meds.Thanks, Sally

I have been able to get medications mailed to me for my husband. Better to get a mail order pharmacy to send you a three month supply if that's possible for you. Depending on your medical insurance situation, some medication can be purchased locally for less or close to your co-pay.

Not sure about the requirements on prescriptions- Mexico offers many medications requiring prescription in the U.S. as over the counter. But a reliable and affordable source would be Walmart. There is a Walmart just North of San Lucas- has its own offramp and overpass from the main highway. I've been able to purchase the asthma inhaler Salbutamol for approximately $3.50 usd. my prescription co-pay is $10.

is also a good place to check pharmacy. if they are out of a medication, they can usually get it in by the next day :yes:

and their prices on some meds easily beat the canadian mail order prices.

All the meds are available in Los Cabos. I have a couple of different expatriate friends that live on the corridor between San Lucas and San Jose. One is 87, the other 85. Still going strong, up early in the morning for walks on the beach or in the desert. We go over and play Rummikube with one of them. He beats me more often than I beat him. The other does the daily crossword puzzles in the Los Cabos Daily News.

Life will be good here for your dad.

oxxo, Maybe my sweet ol Dad could meet these xpats for coffee and some games? That would be soo cool!! He has just started going to the senior center here in Capo and the old farts wouldn't give him the time of day.He is a very gentle guy, but since Mom has been gone he has had the wind knocked out of him, so to speak. U2U me if you think this is a possibility.I would love to see him make friends with others his age and see that life doesn't end after his partner in life goes to Heaven :saint:

U.S. Department of State has a wealth of information on this and other useful subjects. How accurate or current it is I have no idea. But I'm going to check it out for our own situation.

Here goes:

Importing Medicine to Mexico: To import prescription medication into Mexico for personal use, a foreigner must obtain a permit from the Mexican Health Department prior to importing the medicine into Mexico. Additional information in Spanish is available at http://www.cofepris.gob.mx/. For a fee, a customs broker can process the permit before the Mexican authorities on behalf of an individual. If using the services of a customs broker, it is advisable to agree upon the fees before telling the broker to proceed. Current information on local customs brokers (agencias aduanales) is available at the Mexico City yellow pages at http://www.seccionamarilla.com.mx/.

Lucky You, SallySouth, getting to travel with your dad one more time to Baja. The best thing I ever did in life was to look after my parents when they became old. Now I'm in Baja with their memory. Enjoy your time together for "we may never pass this way again".

Brava, Mulegena! My mother, who taught me about Mexico, will be 90 this year. We're going on a cruise to Mexico to celebrate.

My parents gave me the love of music and nature, the appreciation of simple pleasures and a thirst for adventure and wild-away places! Glad you still have the pleasure of their company. Enjoy yourselves.
