Last night I saw on the news that they found a man that was shot in the head then they showed a chase scene where three men had hijacked a car with two people in it at gun point. They raced thru town for miles weaving in and out of traffic almost hitting other cars before jumping out and running. Both within hours of each other.

I guess I can never go there again.
O by the way that was in San Diego.

San Diego is NOTHING compared to Oakland or WASHDC....there are more violent deaths in WASHDC per month than there were at the height of the Iraq war....but the newsholes didn't report that dontchaknow.

Thanks for the warning. We were planing a trip to the zoo with the kids but with all of the violence going on there I don't think we will risk our family. Specialy with the news of the predator in Balboa Park.

But seriously- they were caught because a witness to the carjacking event called the police right away from a cell phone- would that happen here?

The carjacked vehicle was filmed from a police helicopter, all 3 were caught by the police and all 3 will go bye-bye for a very long time. Would that happen here?

Yeah San Diego is a very violent town. I only drive through there with my windows rolled up and my handgun on my lap as I drive to Tijuana. Oh crap, did I just admit I take a handgun into mexico. Just kidding... :lol:

A friend of mine was getting ready to drive down to Baja Sur a couple of days ago. A friend of his was going to follow in another vehicle. When I talked to him yesterday he said he may have to delay a day or two.......................................

His friends car was in the shop having a window replaced from being shot at..............in Chula Vista.

Violence seems to be endemic to all large cities today. I agree that TJ has its own special flair with tongues being cut out, heads cut off and bodies dissolved in acid. But what does that really matter to the person that is killed? They are just as dead from a bullet to the head in Barrio Logan as a a chopped off head in La Mesa.

When folks ask me about the violence and my experience with it I tell them about the several cars/trucks I have had stolen, my business burglarized so many times I lost count, my home broke into twice and an employee held up on my business front door by a knife wielding junkie.

And that was in Long Beach.

It's all bad and no justifying any of it, be it north or south of the border. It's just not something I want to be around or exposed to...

I had to do time in Memphis (yes, living and working there was like doing time) and you can legally drive with a handgun on the passenger seat in plain sight (I think it's illegal to hide it actually). It was very reassuring. Once a guy aggressivley panhandling at a carwash walked up, saw it, and backed off quickly.

With few exceptions- the system works over there (USA). Crooks get caught, prosecuted and put away. People get involved. In Mexico all those steps are for sale and the jailkeeper can still let you out in the end. (and although everyone will peek out from their curtains- no one picks up a phone- because the bad guys could trace the number back to the house with the help of their TelNor friends.)

The justice system "works" in the USA for those who cannot afford a big enough legal team to get them around it. Lots of stories of justice "sold to the highest bidder" in the USA as well. I agree that Mexico is worse but the USA is by no means "innocent" in that charge.

Much of the problem with the criminal justice system in Mexico derives from an atmosphere of corruption that combines with the Napoleanic Code. As Mexico adopted reform in 2008 that moves it to a system of innocent until proven guilty, versus guilty until proven innocent, I think things will change. Not going to happen overnight, but Habeas Corpus works wonders.

We've lived here in Ensenada for about 14 years, and in total we've had these experiences in our family...
I was robbed at knife point,,,then stabbed in the back and eventually had to fight my way out.
My youngest daughter was held up at gun point on the beach with her friends
My oldest daughter was clubbed over the back of her head and raped.
Now,,,,my stabbing took place in Dana Point (south Cal)
My oldest Daughter was rapped in Buena Park
My youngest was held up down here in Ensenada.
Tell me where I feel the safest.
It is bizarre to see life go on as normal down here then to see what the media is reporting. Yes there is a battle going on in TJ and other boarder laying towns,,,but there's battles going on in the US as well. It seems that as long as everything is OK in your back yard (back in the USA) and you can BBQ with out thinking about what is going on in your own town----there are no problems--take you heads out of the sand and stop relying on the Media to tell you where it is and is not safe to go.

It's more sad than bizarre. Only thing I can think of is that using Mexico as a whipping boy is a distraction from what's going on in their own backyard.

I do not wish to sound too paranoid but anymore you need to answer your door with a loaded firearm. For that task I like my pistol gripped short barrel 12 Gauge shotgun loaded with staggered double aught buckshot and slugs. If that fails, well I can always use one of the many other loaded firearms I have stashed strategically around the house and garage. Just kidding! :lol:

Mexico is far far down that whipping boy list I think. Mexico is like a mosquito biting one arm of the USA while the economy and Iraq/Iran/Israel/Afghis/Pakis are like an alligator tearing the other arm off. It only gets a little media attention and it's all bad.

Whatever attention Mexico gets is a distraction from the big problems you cite, Woooosh. Just like the tabloid crap. Mainstream media, despite being labeled with liberal bias, seems to do a helluva job keeping the real stories away from the eyes and ears of most Americans.

Crime is everywhere in the world but here is what makes for a comfort level we as americans need. It is not. Please compare apples to oranges here as there is no,no,no comparison between the two countries and I am sure anyone with any intellectual honesty will agree with me.
Mexico is great to visit and most of the people are wonderful but it is now sub thirdworld status and its because the authorities do not care about the common man.

Your generalizations of Americans and there response to crime reporting is not totally accurate. Likewise, your implied generalizations about Mexicans and crime reporting is not totally accurate either. I do not think anyone can speak for an entire group of people or culture.. I have "intellectual honesty" but respectfully disagree with you..

I hope we can all agree that there are many unsafe places all over the world and that different cultures have different means to deal with their problems.. We should stop being judgemental of others and their systems. I see two simple options adapt, adjust, and deal with with it or get out of where ever you are this not within your comfort zone and not be critical.
