You Never Know Who You're Gonna Meet In Baja

BajaGeoff - 2-3-2009 at 03:17 PM

Last week I was having dinner with some friends in Baja and ended up meeting Randy Seol, who played drums in Strawberry Alarm Clock back in the 60's. He still plays from time to time, but his main line of work is installing solar panels, and was down in Baja to do an install. This is a clip of him playing recently....pretty impressive stuff!

BajaNomad - 2-3-2009 at 03:33 PM

Being a drummer yourself, my question is did you recognize him, or how did this come out in the conversation?

Just curious...

BajaGeoff - 2-3-2009 at 03:40 PM

I had no idea who he was....seeing as how I was born six years after they had their big hit! We were actually talking about music, and his girlfriend mentioned that he was a drummer and that started the whole thing. It was fun talking to him about his experiences over the years....

Russ - 2-3-2009 at 04:19 PM

Wow! DENNIS will want him as a neighbor for sure.

my friends claim to have seen Zena the Warrior Princess

BajaVida - 2-3-2009 at 04:48 PM

fishing near La Paz

BajaGeoff - 2-3-2009 at 05:05 PM

Awesome! Was she in full costume? Hehe.

thebajarunner - 2-3-2009 at 05:34 PM

I met Doug Toms, Reagan's Highway Transportation Czar, while we were all stuck in a wash South of Punta Prieta in the 1972 Mexican 1000.

He actually used his skills to get some organization going and a bunch of us on our way again.

BajaGringo - 2-3-2009 at 05:40 PM

Incense and Peppermint...

Saw them at the Hollywood Bowl - think it was maybe 1968???

tripledigitken - 2-3-2009 at 05:41 PM

I saw the Lone Ranger at the Pyramid Hotel!:tumble::cool:

and I only had a couple of tequila shots at the time.

Ken

BajaGringo - 2-3-2009 at 05:47 PM

Yea - he had a place down here years back. Not sure if he is still a neighbor or not???

BajaGeoff - 2-3-2009 at 05:52 PM

PROOF:

BajaGeoff and The Lone Ranger:

Here is the web site for John Hart: http://www.lonerangerfanclub.com/johnhart.html

Contrary to popular belief, the Lone Ranger is not dead.
Clayton Moore, the actor who played the character on television in the 1950s and who is most
associated with the masked man, passed away in 1999. But there is another actor who played the
Lone Ranger on TV who is very much alive and well - a man who is now the lone Lone Ranger.
John Hart played the part from 1952 to 1954 on 52 episodes of the show while Moore held out in a
contact dispute.

Von - 2-3-2009 at 06:17 PM

Lone Ranger lives in Rosarito now. My Friend talks to him all the time..

55steve - 2-3-2009 at 07:06 PM

Tommy Lee Jones and his son overnighted in Mulege two years ago. Was recognized dining in El Candil by the proprietor. "Call me Tom," was all he said. Baja's a great place for a getaway!

wilderone - 2-4-2009 at 09:54 AM

Had coffee with Lance Alworth at Rancho Leonero last summer. He's building a house on the beach there.

David K - 2-4-2009 at 10:04 AM

Around 1966, Lloyd Bridges (then star of Sea Hunt) and others arrived at Nuevo Mazatlan (Agua de Chale) in dune buggies.

Sam Elliot

dravnx - 2-4-2009 at 12:02 PM

Met Sam Elliot in a bar in San Felipe. Don't remember the name of the bar but it's the one where you can ride your bike or quad into the back room next to the pool tables. Sam rode in on a dirt bike. This was around '95-99.

David K and Baja Angel

BajaVida - 2-4-2009 at 08:24 PM

We meet them in a Marie Callender's parking lot in N. San Diego County.

I also saw God when I almost had a head on with a Pemex truck when we were headed northbound in 1 south of El Rosario--he was about 2 feet over the center line and but for may maneuver into the culvert, I would not be writing this.

And I saw Baja Vida

thebajarunner - 2-4-2009 at 08:50 PM

In the racing days we had James Garner.
and Parnelli
and Mickey
and Rick Mears

I think those were the "good old days"

I also met Bill France, Jr. in El Arco during the 1971 Mexican 1000
He was sitting on a stool, smoking a Winston
(oh yeah, and he died last year from lung cancer)

I totally forgot about the motorsports stars! Heck, they were just good folks like the rest of us Nomads!

Parnelli Jones, Walker Evans, Roger Mears, Mickey Thompson... I met and talked with them all!

Parnelli at the 1973 Baja 1000, in Ensenada the day before the race "warming up the tires" he said:

Mickey Thompson at the 1975 Baja Internacional (500) where he broke at Valle de Trinidad:

Ivan Stewart at the 1975 Baja 300 in Santo Tomas as he just won here:

Here's Parnelli again at the 1975 Baja 1000 in Valle de Trinidad getting fuel:

Here's Mickey Thompson again at the '79 or '80 Parker 400 race next to my pit I was running for Los Campeones Racing Team. Here was by the Turtle Mountains on the California loop.

Mears Gang

motoged - 2-4-2009 at 09:50 PM

While riding in Baja this past Xmas, I met a guy who later met up with Roger Mears at San Borja Mission....as he says in his ride report:

http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=427503&page=3

tripledigitken - 2-4-2009 at 11:19 PM

Motoged,

That looks like a very cool buggy that Mears has there. Can you fill in any details about it.

Thanks,

Ken

motoged - 2-5-2009 at 12:06 AM

TDK,
Sorry, I can't...as my post indicated, a guy I met while riding posted those pics on his ride report that is identified at the beginning of my post...

BajaGeoff - 2-5-2009 at 12:12 AM

Great stuff! More, more, more!

pacside - 2-5-2009 at 01:56 PM

Thanks to two folks my husband met in a 12 hour period he was persuaded to agree (with me) to buy a little patch of dirt in baja sur.

First at the Hotel Twin Dolphin in Cabo he got drunk at the pool bar with the Halliburton heir who owned the Hotel Twin Dolphin (so sad the place got torn down recently). The Halliburton guy talked on and on about how great a place this was and reassured husband the place to buy is a bit up north where we were looking.

Second, during a wait at the Cabo airport he went up to Sammy Hagar and proceeded to talk to him for 30 minutes about baja and Sammy went on and on about how great this place is and reiterated how much he liked the area we were looking at. Husband was so jazzed that Sammy spoke to him for so long and thought that was the coolest thing. So I guess if it weren't for these two folks we might not have taken the plunge and bought.

So thank you Mr. Hagar and Mr. Halliburton.

DENNIS - 2-5-2009 at 02:44 PM

Welcome to BajaNomad, Cantinflas. I thought you were dead.

BajaGeoff - 2-5-2009 at 02:47 PM

Welcome cantinflas!

As a kid I was really into Airwolf with Jan Michael Vincent! I know he was a decent surfer too...I think he did a lot of his own surfing when they filmed Big Wednesday.

cantinflas - 2-5-2009 at 03:05 PM

Dead? Heck no I'm hanging out in Mexico with Elvis. BajaGeoff= He was'nt a great surfer but he could hold his own in the line up.

I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Cerritos
His hair was perfect

motoged - 2-5-2009 at 03:41 PM

Yeah?!?!

Well, one late evening I met Mr Cabra....

He asked me to call him by his first name after a while ...

It felt a bit weird at first as it was an unusual first name ...

I had never heard that name before that night, but I certainly have never forgotten it....

Chupa.....

Chupacabra.....

MISTER to you....

LancairDriver - 2-6-2009 at 02:42 PM

Read Lou Federico's book "One Hell of a Ride" where he describes building the original Hotel Mulege and Punta Chivato. He had guests such as Ann Margaret, John Wayne, Jane Mansfield, and a few other well known personalities. A very interesting book on Baja in the time before the road was put in. Don Johnson at the Hotel Serenidad has had quite a few celebrities stop in, and was a personal friend of John Wayne. I have heard Olivia Newton-John had a house around Conception Bay also. I have run into Harrison Ford and Patrick Swayzy checking in at the San Filepe airport in the past, not to mention Javier Arellano-Felix and a couple of other thugs buying fuel at the same airport. He was later busted which started the current drug wars. By the way- he was given preferential treatment by everyone at the airport and I wondered why at the time.

I knew I could count on you BG, oh, and Maynard, from Tool lives here, has a very successful vineyard, and the drummer from Pearl Jam left. I wanna play, too.
