The ultimate Mexico/Baja Music Mix

CortezBlue - 2-5-2009 at 07:55 AM

So having Rhapsody Music Service I am constantly surfing different types of music, which made me think about building the ultimate Mexico/Baja Playliist that will take me to Mexico whenever I am driving around town or drinking a beer in the back yard.

I will start the list

Jimmy Messina "Mexico Minute", yes I know that Brooks and Dunn did it originally, but I like Jimmy's version.

k-rico - 2-5-2009 at 08:46 AM

Whole albums worth listening to:

Santana, "Abraxis"
Kinky, "Kinky"
Pink Floyd, "Wish You Were Here"
Ozomatli, "Ozomatli"
Jimi Hendrix, "Are You Experienced?"
Stone Temple Pilots, "Core" (trust me, the song Sex Type Thing, cranked up to like 11, is an excellent way to drown out the noise of washboards at high speeds, at least until you realize you have a flat tire)

Sorry, not a parrothead.

Fanatics. My neighbor Art is a capital P Parrothead. Every song on his iPod, which is wired into his stereo system and blasts throughout his house and outside as well, is Buffett. When he comes over to my place, I change the Sirius satellite channel on my stereo to Margaritaville, just to avoid any discussions about whether Buffett is superior to whatever it is I'm listening to. The music aside, I have to admire Buffett for making a lucrative career out of a partying slacker lifestyle.

BajaGringo - 2-6-2009 at 11:34 AM

This is all great music but even more important is the system you have to enjoy these tunes. Are you all using digital or analog???

Nothing rocks like an old school system with heavy analog amps and speakers so big and heavy nobody would even try to steal them.

If you are not sure, feel free to ask for assistance...

I will check out Paco for sure. I have one disc from Jesse Cook. It is his first album self titled. 1995 we were browsing at the Tower Records in La Jolla and they had his album playing in the store. The store was big and divided by a glass wall. I went to find out who was playing and Jesse was actually playing live in the store with his trio promoting his album. We got an autographed copy. I do like flamenco.

Thanks for the tip!

Cyanide41 - 2-6-2009 at 02:40 PM

If you like Ozomatli check out the B-Side Players. There are a San Diego band that infuses the rythem of latin jazz and rock but leaves out most of the hip hop element that Ozo has.

bajabk - 2-6-2009 at 02:48 PM

Willie and Lobo's CD is "Fandango Nights" and is excellent!

BajaGeoff - 2-6-2009 at 02:57 PM

Calexico - The Black Light, Feast of Wire and Hot Rail

All of these albums make for a great soundtrack to any Baja trip!

Listen To Calexico

From Havana Moon, 1983.
Produced by Jerry Wexler in association with Booker T. Jones. Great songs including Who Do You Love and Vereda Tropical (Carlos sings with his father on this cut--rumor has it they recorded it without Carlos' mother knowing it and that she cried when she heard it). Booker T plays the Hammond B3 on it.

Fantastic driving music!

Yes, and no!
I am an old time audiophile and still have over 4000 vinyl LPs stored in rice paper sleeves with plastic jackets in a special room I built for my records.
However, a top notch high bit rate Burr Brown DAC can rival analog, especially if it is an SACD or DVD Audio. I am a huge Lexicon fan and my MC12 has a 192k 48bit ADC for every analog input and a 192k 48bit DAC on every analog output.

Love it all, especially when I am at my baja casa with my original Mirage m5's blasting:coolup:

CortezBlue - 2-6-2009 at 10:48 PM

Wow, this is really a great list. I just thought of another great song.

Pablo Cruise "Ocean Breeze" Put this number on 15 minutes before the sunsets, grab a cold adult beverage and watch the sunset with this tune in the background. It will bring tears to your eyes!!

The problem is that few folks understand that and think that if it is "digital", it must be the best. Someone forgot to teach them about bit rate...

Most anything by Lila Downs or Ozomatli, especially their many versions of La Bruja.
And although they have nothing to do with Mexico, Little Feat always seem to fit the bill when I'm listening in Baja.

My boyfriend cracked me up becuase he could laugh at himself and when he was in a troublesome situation once, he said something like, 'this poor beaner' or 'your sorry as- beaner boyfriend needs your help, pleeease!'
My ex boyfriend is a Mexican born and living in Tijuana, which is where I met him and was surprised, elated, and very dismayed to fall hopelessly, madly, head-over-heels in love with him with every fibre and atom of my being. I've never felt that intense of romantic love in my whole entire life before; I was 45- almost 47 now. He spent most of his life in Cali but moved back to Tijuana a couple of years ago. He gave me a cd with that song. It is sad, funny, blunt and irreverent, and true to life in how so many gringos and the ones portayed in the video loathe, resent, look down upon, stereotype, blame, and view the Mexicans and how the Mexicans respond to them with the truth. I like the song and the video.

UnfotunateIy, I still love Sergio just as much now as before but long distance relationships are too frustrating, unfulfilling, and
heart-breaking. I could not handle it.
Sigh...
Oh well, like the song by Nazareth, Love Hurts!

I also love Santana and the Gypsy Kings and music by Bebe from Spain.

redhilltown - 5-9-2009 at 12:05 AM

A few songs:

Mexican Radio- Wall of Voodoo (I hear the talking of the DJ/Can't understand just what does he say?)

Carmelita-Warren Zevon

Pancho & Lefty--Emmy Lou via Townes van Zandt

Victor Jara-Arlo Guthrie

Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues-Dylan

and while it does not mention Mexico per se, the best driving song I feel of all time is Streets With No Name by U2...especially in an area like south of Catavina where 1 opens up and you really feel like you're free at last! Turn it up to 11.

It's really easy.
Just go to http://www.rhapsody.com/home.html
Look for the "Search for Music" text box.
Enter "Slayer"
Hit the "Track" button
Choose the track "Raining Blood"
Press Play
And that's all there is to it.

Ana Gabriel - Album- La Reina Canta a Mexico. ( ranchera )
Fito Olivares - pretty much anything ( cumbia )
Somebody mentioned Willie and Lobo, and they are really good. They only play instrumentel music and their style is described as "Gypsy Boogaloo". Favorite albums are Siete and Wild Heart.

I am not trying to hijack the thread..MANY good suggestions here...some of which I have never heard of (Fito Olivares)..but...

Could I get a couple of posts about your favorite Cumbia artists? Just watched the movie Cumbia Callera (it is a little different but I liked it!) and I am now hooked even more on cumbia..

Whoever brought up Fito Olivares...you hit a homerun! Jon

bajaandy - 5-10-2009 at 09:12 PM

See, the problem here is that like Baja itself, there is a different "feel" that calls for a specific type of music... driving Mex 1, sitting on the beach on the Pacific side, sitting on the beach on the SOC side, morning, mid-day, evening, at camp, at the hotel, in the cantina.... the list goes on and on.

But just a few that fit the bill for me at various times and places:
The Reverend Horton Heat
Trio Los Panchos
UB40
Herb Alpert
Bob Marley
Ozomatli
Carlos Santana
Dave Matthews Band
Jack Johnson

GeoRock - 5-10-2009 at 09:41 PM

Key West The Band

Any of their CD's-- anyone that is a Parrothead, enjoys country, and likes the Beach Boys will love this band's music.

And yes, "Key West The Band" is their full name.
