Juan's got rocks in his head these days!

shari - 2-5-2009 at 09:47 AM

Juan has been putting in a hard couple weeks of rock work on our new addition...it is very slow going...first he goes and hand picks pretty rock with flat faces, dumps em and spreads em all around our place...then like putting a big puzzle together he chooses and places the rocks so they look pretty...very time consuming as you have to do the same process outside AND inside too.
But its' looking real nice...this week we got the door and window frames in thanks to mr.redmesa's technical assistance...good thing nobody wants to go fishing these days...we have worked out a nice schedule of rock work till 2, then race to the beach for a swim and relaxing in the sand for a couple hours....ahhhh....baja

Timo1 - 2-5-2009 at 09:51 AM

Looks like those 2x4s got used after all
Lookin good Juan

shari - 2-5-2009 at 10:17 AM

2x6's Timo...you should see redmesas place now...2nd floor up, railing on the upstairs deck, gorgeous rock staircase...
the campground weeps for you guys...way too empty...firepit cold and neglected...but at least we're getting some work done now! cheers amigo

Timo1 - 2-5-2009 at 10:22 AM

I hope they post some pics of their progress
Sounds awesome

jorgie - 2-5-2009 at 10:29 AM

LOOKING GREAT

Barry A. - 2-5-2009 at 10:29 AM

Tell Juan that he needs some re-bar in there someplace to stand up to those "Asunsion tremors" we all have heard of. :o (looks like some sticking up from the corners, alright)

It is going to be beautiful-----------fun, fun.

Barry

shari - 2-5-2009 at 10:44 AM

oh yeah, dont worry...we REMEMBER those shakes rattles n rolls and have thick rebar in the corners and other stragecis spots....that is why we are now building with rock....it gives and doesnt crack like cement blocks...not one problem with any of the rock walls we built...so it passed the test....another neat thing is you dont have to do anything inside...no drywall, no painting and no worries about damage by some drunk guy...rock solid.

mulegemichael - 2-5-2009 at 11:59 AM

....that "drunk guy" is on his way, shari....see you midday monday..with bells on ...

Lauriboats - 2-5-2009 at 12:48 PM

Looking really good. I'll bet Juan is looking forward to a fishing trip day to relax.

Iflyfish - 2-5-2009 at 12:56 PM

Juan es un grande artiste! Looking good. What energy.

Saludos!

Sharksbaja - 2-5-2009 at 01:14 PM

Impressive rock work!

ELINVESTIG8R - 2-5-2009 at 01:17 PM

That Juan is multi-talented. Nice work Juan!

Bajagypsy - 2-5-2009 at 01:45 PM

Can't wait to come down and see it!

abreojos - 2-5-2009 at 02:44 PM

Excellent rock work. Just hope you don't have any spray painters around. Is Jaun available for hire?

shari - 2-5-2009 at 04:04 PM

spraypainters wouldnt dare come near our place with all our loud dogs and guard cats!...rock work is very slow and meticulous to get it to look nice...ya wouldnt want to pay somebody to do it....would get expensive.

fishbuck - 2-5-2009 at 04:23 PM

"good thing nobody wants to go fishing these days"

I want to go fishing!!!!

But I'll settle for whale petting at the end of February.

k-rico - 2-5-2009 at 05:28 PM

The wall looks great!! I'd love to have the time to do that in such a great place. You're lucky folks, and I know you have made your luck with a lot of hard work. Bravo!

EnseNADAslim - 2-5-2009 at 06:01 PM

Hi,
Rock work looks nice, real nice. Thinking of coming by and checking out and staying a night or two with my wife on our way home from Mulege at the end of February,,,,,got a room available?

pacside - 2-5-2009 at 06:16 PM

Shari - wow love the rock wall. It is like a work of art picking out all those pieces and making them all work together both on the inside and out. Good job Juan.

Russ - 2-5-2009 at 07:12 PM

This is my first place in Punta Chivato. The work is definitely not as nice as what Juan does. But it is gone now:( The new owners put stucco over it when they remodeled. Originally the contractor built a block building and then broke each rock to face the out side. Different rock for the bulkhead but also split each rock. Sure glad I didn't loose these pics.

LOL, there is a guy in Abreojos named Chutin Arce who did it for 500 pesos a meter a few years ago. Making a 10 meter wall 3 meters high would cost $15,000 back then. Not a bad deal at all. Doing it for yourself, your right, it makes it priceless!

Skip_Mac - 2-5-2009 at 08:24 PM

Shari, can you give me the directions/details...Looks like I may very well be on unpaid time off in February...perhaps in late Feb. I'd love to make it, Several years ago I was at the lagoon with the Green Tortoise and would love to do it again and visit Asuncion for fishing and all. I may be coming down alone. Car is a Prius, not a lot of extra space.. but the last time Mary and I brought down some things. So I'll do what I can (at least Maple Syrup, sushi rice and Nori). U2U me

Skip_Mac - 2-5-2009 at 08:25 PM

Shari, Sorry, thats directions and details for the Whale Watch Late Feb.. Just to be clear.

Gaucho - 2-5-2009 at 08:28 PM

Really beautiful Shari.

Bob H - 2-5-2009 at 10:38 PM

Shari, Juan's rock work looks fantastic. It's finally coming along. Lots and lots of hard work collecting the rocks, sorting them out and then placing them so nicely with perfect presentation. WOW!

Russ, I cannot believe that beautiful rock house was stuccoed over... wow.

BajaGringo - 2-6-2009 at 12:33 AM

Shari, that looks great. We are planning on doing a very similar look to the exterior of our place we are building right now.

Post more pictures as the project progresses...

shari - 2-6-2009 at 07:57 AM

thanks everyone...yes...rock...well....rocks! Some stick rock on the outside but this place is all rock...the whole wall inside and out. It is very tricky to get it nice and flat and pleasant to look at with a combination of colour and sizes. I am learning to appreciate the nuances of rock work....I always did like the Flinstones!

rbwrivers - 2-6-2009 at 08:14 AM

Looks really great!

2-tie-dye-4 - 2-8-2009 at 07:38 AM

Beautiful, can't wait to see the finished product. Btw, that's a Juan rock wall in the background of my avatar. And, of course, "Baja Lucy Big dog who has immigrated to the states" on my lap. Shari....we love you...what else can we say but, thanks.

Diver - 2-8-2009 at 09:37 AM

You mean Lucy is really gone ? :wow:
I hope she will be a snowbird and return for the winter !!

BajaGringo - 2-8-2009 at 06:02 PM

So are we going to get some updated photos? Or did you give him then weekend off???

shari - 2-8-2009 at 08:15 PM

Juan takes sundays off...so this is what he did today

Juan in 'got baja?' hat brings home the fish!

David K - 2-8-2009 at 08:20 PM

I like it when he does this!

BajaGringo - 2-8-2009 at 08:23 PM

I just noticed the Heart on the wall.

Very cool Juan!

shari - 2-8-2009 at 08:27 PM

ah BG...so glad you are observant! its a valentine wall.

Barbareno - 2-9-2009 at 07:36 AM

Shari I wish Tim was there helping Juan right now and learning how to do that. Looking real good.

Speaking of rocks...how did Vgabndo's (Perry) rock art fair? I loved that.

Barb

jorgie - 2-9-2009 at 10:27 AM

OK, BG and Shari, I've looked......where is the heart ????

shari - 2-9-2009 at 10:33 AM

you can see it clearer in the second photo of the thread...unfocus your eyes a bit...have a tequila first!

DianaT - 2-9-2009 at 10:37 AM

Glad I am not the only one who did not see the heart in the last photo---but now I definitely see it in the second photo.

ELINVESTIG8R - 2-9-2009 at 10:43 AM

Juan and Sheri's "Love Shack" I think the song sang by the B-52's has the word whale and something about setting sail mentioned in it so this could be an appropriate song.

Edited to add a litle color!

shari - 2-9-2009 at 10:46 AM

know what I LOVE....that the heart appeared mysteriously..Juan wasnt concious of it either...nor did he see it right away so dont feel bad

BajaGringo - 2-9-2009 at 11:11 AM

The mysteries of love...

2-tie-dye-4 - 2-9-2009 at 11:30 AM

Oh my Buddha! didn't see the heart the first time, but I see it now. How wonderful. Well, there goes our thought of giving Juan our Sax that we don't know how to play, Even more wonderful. Baja time. It's snowing with sunshine here. Baja time.

BajaGringo - 2-10-2009 at 11:48 AM

Any updated photos Shari???

jorgie - 2-10-2009 at 02:10 PM

I CAN SEE.....I CAN SEE.....

Iflyfish - 2-10-2009 at 09:27 PM

How cool is that!!

I don't believe we can draw a line without it displaying our character is you know how to look. I am not surprised that a heart emerges in his work. Not at all.

Iflyfish

Iflyfish - 2-10-2009 at 09:34 PM

Bet you didn't see the Omega beside the heart. Love is the end (of it).

Nice, even though unconscious in a Jungian sense of it.

Iflyfish

jorgie - 2-12-2009 at 06:40 AM

Hey Iflyfish, do you think Juan really didn't know it was in the rockwork ?
Juan's artwork ? He is way too good .......
