BajaNomad

Your plane is ready!

fishbuck - 2-8-2009 at 04:23 PM

Okay, it's time to try again!
I have my plane scheduled for Sat. Fed 14 to Monday Mar. 2.
I will depart from Brown Field in San Diego and fly to Guerrero Negro. There will be one stop at San Felipe for fuel and to clear customs.
I have 2-3 seats available on a share expense basis.
We will leave San Diego at about 10:am and arive in G.N. at about 2:pm. A cab into town and then party with other Nomads who are gathering for Shari's birthday and whale watching the next day.
If we get done whale watching early enough we may fly home on Sunday. Otherwise we will leave on Monday morning as early as the weather allows.
Any questions?

I didn't know GN allowed private flight landings ??
Wish I could be there.

fishbuck - 2-8-2009 at 04:58 PM

I'm pretty sure they do now. Just no fuel. But I'll have plenty for the round trip.

Sorry to say I can't figure out how to start a new thread...maybe the moderators can enlighten me or simply move this post to a new thread (figured I'd tag along the aviation thread here)...

NOTICE: Just recieved word via phone from Bill Allen of Flying Samaritans that a Cessna 182RG (tail # N5168S) was stolen out of Bay of LA this morning approximately 4am. It's dark blue/gray/white w/ newer GPS in it. No persons were harmed during the theft.

I'm forwarding this via radio & e-mail to Ralph XE2/N6MNO at Rancho Santa Inez, Paul XE2/N6GRT at Rancho Socorrito, Patrick XF1SD at Pto Lopez Mateos, Geary XE2/WB6PKH at Playa Burro & Dick XE2/N1zg in La Paz. Continue to spread the word.

Thanks.

This sounds like a weekend trip when you say arrive at 2, go to the party the next day and then whale watching and come back as early as Sunday but you wrote Feb 14 to March 2 wich is 2 weeks.
There you have my question.

Timo1 - 2-8-2009 at 05:48 PM

I'm confusilated too Ferna

danaeb - 2-8-2009 at 05:50 PM

He didn't say WHICH Sunday. Jeez Fernando, get with the party!:lol::lol:

BajaGringo - 2-8-2009 at 05:51 PM

After landing the pilot may go fishing, consume alcohol and chase women. At that point all bets are off on the exact date of departure...

Yes, Mike is a pilot. Not sure that he got his mile high club certificate while at the wheel though...

Elena, I will mention it on the local San Carlos Cruiser's Net. Many of the local boats mostly monitor the VHF nets.

Shari, That "Coco Logic". and amounts to a typo,:?:
Let's hope his flying skills are better then his typing.

fishbuck - 2-8-2009 at 10:53 PM

I tried calling Shari this morning pero no en casa.
Okay, I guessed wrong and scheduled the plane for the wrong weekend.
What I meant was Sat. Feb 29 to Mon. March 2.
I am flying on Sat Feb 14 with my instructor just to warm up and train a little.
The other Sat. in Feb is the 21st.
So what day is the Party? The 24th is a Tuesday.

And for the record. I spelled Guerrero wrong. I'll fix it.

fishbuck - 2-8-2009 at 11:06 PM

Last time I landed there was on the big dirt runway in town. The paved runway was owned by the salt company.
The salt company donated the paved runway to the city and they closed the dirt runway.
It's run by the military but I'm like 99% sure it's open for private aircraft. A couple of small airlines fly in there. And ofcouse the salt company still uses it.
But I'll find out for sure before I try landing there.

shari - 2-9-2009 at 07:59 AM

so much for coco logic...so the tentative plan is to arrive in GN on friday the 27th for an early dinner at sto.remedio and go out to the lagoon saturday 28th and depending on weather camp at the lagoon and stay till sunday if it is nice....much depends on weather and a billion other things or course...hard to make definate plans in baja...which sucks if you are trying to rent a plane I guess.

Okay. I did guess right. I reajusted the scehdule. I will leave San Diego at about 9-10am Friday morning. That should get us to Guerrero Negro at around 3pm.
I kept the Monday but will leave Sunday morning if we see whales on Saturday.
So, Friday Feb 27 to Sunday March 1, with the option to stay one more day if needed.
Anymore questions, comments, or ridicule?

Looks like a confident pilot to me! How many flight hours have you logged? IFR?VFR? What is the weight limit including bags?
Thanks!

" Looks like a confident pilot to me! How many flight hours have you logged? IFR?VFR? What is the weight limit including bags?

1) Confidence: Yes, it will be an easy flight. The hardest part is getting the money.
2) I have about 400 hours and about 50 hours of PA-32-300 time. All of the PA-32 time is Baja.
3) The flight will be VFR. I have some instrument dual but haven't finished the rating yet. Besides if the conditions are IFR we aren't going even if I had the rating. IFR means the weather sucks.
4) The plane will carry 5 passengers and 1 pilot. I've never carried more than 5 total so that I can carry more fuel and baggage. But on this trip I'm planning 4 total so maybe 50lbs of gear each. We'll only be there for a few days so we'll be traveling light.

Your navigational computer:

This is a smaller version of the same type of GPS that a modern airliner uses. My plane has one and it works very well.
In Baja I normally navigate by looking out the windshield but a smart pilot always backs that up with his instruments as well.

How much is the fare you are requesting?

dtbushpilot - 2-10-2009 at 10:25 AM

fdt, as a private pilot fishbuck can't request a "fare" but he can ask for people to share expenses. I guess your share would depend on how much beer you drink.

Sounds like a fun trip fishbuck, wish I could join you. We will be down there about the same time but in the camper instead of the plane. Maybe we will run into each other....first beer is on me......dt

fdt - 2-10-2009 at 11:48 AM

Yes, thank you. I meant to write how much is the shared expense?

Based on a 4 way expense share my estimate is $300 each. I need at least 1 person to pitch in but 2 or 3 is better.
It will take about 3.5 hours each way. Plus there is landing fees, an airway fee, and insurance. All fuel and other aircraft expenses are covered in the rental cost.
The plane costs $140/hour while the engine is running. Certainly not cheap but you get to travel at about 150 mph and don't have to deal with traffic etc.
If you fly with me 1 time you will never want to drive again. Flying is much quicker, easier and relaxing. Plus the view is spectacular.

We will probably use this one on the south bound flight.

Non yet. But I will proceed with the plan. I don't think I will fly down by myself although that would be fun.
But the plane will cost somewhere between $1000-1200 so I'm not sure I want to spend that much by myself.

When I recalculated the time it comes out to 2.41 hours based on 135knots(150mph). Or 4.82 hours round trip.
If that is accurate the aircraft rental cost is $676.00 total. Or $170/per person base on a four way expense share.
As I mentioned before there is insurance cost, an airway fee, and landing fees. Or about another $25-50 each.

You can never really be sure how much it will cost until after you've done it. So I always estimate a little high but the expense share will be based on the actual cost.

Somewhere between $200-300 each based on 4 people. I will go if I get one person to go an pitch in the 1/4 share.

fishbuck - 2-12-2009 at 04:34 PM

Okay, I am making a new schedule.
It seems like no one wants to go on this trip. So I think I will fly down alone. I need the flying and I'm planning more Baja trips this year so I need the practice.
I will now leave Saturday morning. Maybe as early as 8am if the weather is VFR. Maybe even a special VFR if it's clear in the direction San Felipe.

Specifications (for a 1972 PA32-300)

- Top Speed 174 mph
- Cruise Speed, 75% power (15.8 gal/h) 168 mph
- Stall Speed, flaps 63 mph
- Stall Speed, no flaps 70 mph
- Landing Roll, flaps 630 ft
- Landing Roll over 50 ft Obstacle 1000 ft
- Empty Weight 1788 lb
- Useful Load 1612 lb
- Engine Lycoming IO-540-K1A5
- Horsepower 300
- Propeller Diameter 80 in
- Fuel Capacity 84 US gal

According to my spec sheet a PA32-300 can cruise at 168mph at 75% power.
It's 170 statute miles from San Diego to San Felipe. So about 1 hour.
And 204 statute miles from San Felipe to Guerrero Negro. About 1.2 hours.
So I should be able to get to G. N. by noon time on Saturday.
Ya, I miss the friday night party but I can party on Saturday night. And then I'll whale watch on Sunday morning and fly home Sunday afternoon.
This way I don't miss any days of work. And I'll be traveling very light so I make that plane go as fast as it can at 75% power. That will be fast.
Of course I will still take someone if the want to share to cost.

fishbuck - 2-13-2009 at 04:13 AM

I really have Baja on my mind. And flying.
1 more day of work and then flying on Saturday. I figure I'll fly about 2 hours. Maybe a little less.
I need to work with the radios and go to a few different airports.
Maybe cost about $400 including the instructor. But this is the last time I'll need him. He already likes my flying. I just need to smooth it up a little and work on congested airspace practice.
It's funny because in Baja there is no one to talk to on the radio. When you get close to a controlled airport there is.
I need to find out if Guerrero Negro is a controlled airport. I don't think so.

I'm having my doubts about spending so much money to go whale watching. I've seen lots of gray whales. But never upclose in the lagoons.
I could save the flying trip for later in the year when it's warmer. For fishing!

Maybe I will get on an airliner and go to Cabo and catch a fish.
Maybe a marlin. It would cost about the same.

But I need this flying trip. I need to get my baja flying back on track.
I was thinking that on the way home from G.N. I will land on my runway in San Quintin. I won't even get out of the plane. Just taxi back and takeoff for home.

But someday San Quintin will be my home. And I'll have my plane there. And I can just jump in and fly where ever I want. Where ever the fish are biting.
Where ever the beer is cold and the women are... well, you know! ;)

[Edited on 2-13-2009 by fishbuck]

dtbushpilot - 2-13-2009 at 05:49 AM

Hope you can make it happen, the part about your own plane and San Quintin too.

Flying in Baja has been one of my greatest adventures in life and I'm fortunate to have a wife who looks forward to adventure as much as I do. Maybe we can fly down together some time.......dt

Flew the plane today. I still have it scheduled for the 27-2 for whale watching.
I will fly it again next Saturday for about 1 more hour.
Weather was great today. Could have made it all the way to Guerrero Negro no problem.:)
