East Cape?

fishbuck - 2-10-2009 at 12:32 AM

Cheapest (but still decent) beachfront hotel? I'm jonesing for a sea of cortez fishing trip in about April.
I might go back to La Ventana but the airfare is about half to go to Cabo instead of La Paz.
Maybe I'll fly into Cabo and drive to La Ventana.
Little longer drive but probably very scenic.

Hotel Punta Colorada was still affordable a year or so ago...not sure about now...i DO know it's situated in the most beautiful spot in all of the east cape..and fab fishing from the beach right out in front

Try Martin Verdugo's ocean front rooms mas o menos $70. Killer location in Los Barriles. I dont have contact info but there are a lot of Nomads who stay there so they will probably chime in.

Can't go wrong at Verdugo's. Decent place, nice people, excellent captains and equipment and right on the beach.

I should be down there then, I'd be happy to buy you a beer and share a boat. u2u me for contact info.....dt

Both great suggestions. My preference would be Punta Colorado for the remoteness. On the other hand, if you get tired of their restaurant, you'll have a bit of driving to do for tacos of a different flavor.

I love Punta Colorada also and have stayed there several times. It is a bit remote and unless you have your own transportation you are stuck there. That's not necessarily a bad thing, there's not many more beautiful places to be stuck. Nice people, great bar and a million dollar view. You can probably find a ride to town if you really need to go but it can get pricey. Then you need to find a ride back which can be difficult.....and pricey. They have a nice dirt strip if you wanted to fly in.

Verdugo's is right in town, walking distance from everything and there may even be some "eye candy" on the beach. All the necessity's of life in one place.

Can't go wrong at either place, just a matter of what you want to do there.....dt

I checked out Verdugo's but he doesn't list his rates. $70 is in the ballpark.
La Ventana is about $50/night for beachfront plus the panga's are a lot cheaper.
But I do love East Cape.
Never been to Hotel Punta Colorado but stayed at Hotel Palmas De Cortez a few times.
Anybody ever stay at Hotel Las Barriles? I think it's across the street from the beach but only $55/night.

Hotel Los Barriles is very nice also. It is across the street but beach access is down the street a ways then several blocks East. The main drag is pretty busy at times. The rooms are nice and they have a nice pool too. They can fix you up with a fishing trip also.

Are you coming down just for fishing? How long do you plan to stay?...dt

Stayed at Punta Colorado two times, for a week each time. It was great both times!!! including the food, and staff.

We hired a cab (van) there (on call by telephone) to take us to Los Cabos one day----he stayed with us for the entire day, and costs us $100 US flat. With 4 of us, that was only $25 + tip-----not bad. We gave him a $50US tip he was so good, and flexible, and tolerate.

Love it there.

Just a few days. 1 or 2 fishing days and a beach day. It sounds like Verdugos is what I'm after this trip.
I'll have a rental car so I'll drive over to Punta Colorado for a drink and to check it out.

Get out that credit card and stay at Rancho Leonero - you won't regret it. All meals provided, all choices of boats - cheaptest is 1/2 day panga $175 (7 am to noon). Great snorkling right in front of the hotel; pool, bar, your own patio, lots of other fishermen. A taxi van from Cabo airport is about $60 OW. You can hook up with Cabo Pulmo snorkling trip, horseback riding, ATV riding, local hiking on your own, massage, taxi to Los Barriles.

East Cape

rogbag - 2-11-2009 at 03:04 PM

Hotel Punta Colorada was closed when we were in Buena Vista first week of December. Potential customers were being referred to Hotel Palmas. Rancho Leonero was still open, but they had no guests and were talking about closing until March. Rancho Buena Vista was open but their restaurant was closed. The bar was still open, so all was not lost. Hotel Buena Vista was open as was their restaurant.

"...cheaptest is 1/2 day panga $175 (7 am to noon). "

That's how much I paid for a full day at Los Suenos (Muertos) and at Bahia Asuncion.
I love the East Cape but don't like their prices.

dtbushpilot - 2-11-2009 at 05:36 PM

Prices in the East Cape are high for most things. I'm sure it has to do with the large gringo presence. It is beautiful, the fishing is great and if you find comfort in being around lots of gringos they're there. My neighbor goes to La Ventana from time to time and it's much cheaper to go fishing there but there are always trade-offs......dt
