Guerrero Negro?

If I fly my plane to G.N. I'm guessing I can get a taxi into town from the airport.
How can I get from town out to Laguna Ojo de Libre for whale watching?

take a bicycle in your plane. good exercise when you reach your destination.. just don't let DK see you bicycling, he will stop and harangue you about how bikes are dangerous, and a threat to RVs and Toyota Tacomas

fishbuck - 2-12-2009 at 05:42 PM

Ya, I thought about it.
It's probably 5-10 miles to the turn-off and then about 5-10 miles of sandy dirt road.
Possible I guess but not practical.

so maybe a $15-20 cab ride each way? after what you spent on avgas this should be do-able.

it's flat, take the bike. you'll likely have a tail wind for at least one leg.
we occasionally take my friend's plane for mountain biking trips here in the states -- unpack the bikes, load up the panniers, and off you go!

biglar - 2-12-2009 at 05:52 PM

Go to Malarrimo Tours and they'll bus you out there. I'm not sure if Laguna Tours is still in business, but if so, they'll do the same for the same price and have a nice little introduction before you leave. I don't think you can go out across the salt co. land alone, think you've got to have a pass...easier, simpler and quicker to go with the tour.

I like to take morning and afternoon tours the same day. As long as you've gone all that way, why not make the most of it ??

Lar.

you can go alone

BajaDanD - 2-12-2009 at 06:18 PM

You just have to Bike out of GN to the Turn Off then go all the way out to the Lagoon. About half way there is a guy at a booth/gate thingy who takes your info then off you go the rest of the way out to the Lagoon. Better have a motor on that bike.
Go to Malarrimo's If your too lazy to ride a bike out there

When you flying in I might be there.I'll gladly come get you at the airport and drive you out to the Lagoon If Im in town.

fishbuck - 2-12-2009 at 06:31 PM

Okay, I checked with Malarrimo's website. They have a tour from 8am-12pm. That should work okay. I should be able to get to the airport and be airborne by 1-2pm and back to San Diego by 4-5pm.

Los Caracoles Hotel. Raul has tours. Nicer rooms than malarrimo. Sheet! Shari didn't tell you?

fishbuck - 2-12-2009 at 09:50 PM

I just got an email from Caracoles. From Elisa Ruiz. Their tour leaves at 8am also.
No Shari isn't helping me out much this time. Guess I'm on my own.

Sheesh Bucky...I've been away fixing doggies...and waiting to see if your flighst is on or not...you KNOW Juan will come and pick you up at the airstrip...just let us know about what time...you can even give him your frequency and he can dial it into his radio and you can call him...who's your buddy anyhow? We will be a gang out there and need to do beer runs to town anyway...glad to come and get ya and will even either reschedule the dance party to saturday night for you...or do both nights. We would NEVER leave you stranded amigo and it wont be a birthday bash without you. Also there will be a lovely brit mujer along as well!!! It would be good to stay at Caracoles if you can so we can party in your room!!!

dtbushpilot - 2-13-2009 at 08:55 AM

Fish, be careful about trip planning in Baja. Everything takes more time than you think it will especially when you are in a hurry. I wouldn't even consider trying to fly back to the States from GN after a whale trip that is SUPPOSED to be back by 12:00. Sometimes everything goes as scheduled but not often. Nothing worse than being in a hurry to make something happen when you're flying, bad things can happen.

Take your time, stay another night, you might even get lucky.......leave in the morning. You'll have more fun and get home safely........dt

wilderone - 2-13-2009 at 10:15 AM

There must be 8 or 9 whale tour operators in the same block as Mallarimos. A bike? It think it's about 26 miles from GN. Are you going by yourself?

Sorry Cindi, but I am on a roll as Baja Spell Checker this morning! :light:

MALARRIMO (remember, two Ls in Spanish make the y sound, as in La Jolla)

dtbushpilot - 2-13-2009 at 10:25 AM

Hey DK, do you think anybody in Nomad land didn't know where wilderone was referring to?.......no wonder people like to pick on you.....dt

David K - 2-13-2009 at 10:39 AM

Hey DT, I am fully aware of that... the purpose here is to inform Nomads on the way to spell places we love...

If someone says they love Fresno, yet they spell it Fredsno or Frezno, I would hope they would want to spell it the right way, for the locals as well as learning for themselves.

Nomad is for fun and education. Learning the right way is not an insult. If you had been here as long as some others, you would know I am a terrible English speller... but places in Baja should be spelled the right way, out of respect, if for no other reason... IMO.

Diver - 2-13-2009 at 10:50 AM

Personally, I refuse to learn the correct spelling of Mallarraminos because everyone knows what I mean no matter how I spell it !!
(And because it irritates DK ! ) :smug:

Hey DT, now you are getting the hang of it !!:lol::lol:

BTW, I was sure that Shari, the-hostess-with-the-mostess would chime in and take care of the Fishman !!
I have been to one of Shari's birthday whaling extravaganzas and it was well worth the trip !!

David K - 2-13-2009 at 11:01 AM

Hey Diver... bring your 'got baja?' hat by so I can pur a foxtail sticker in it... you know, just so it irritates you!:smug:

LOL

Love to give you guys someting to do... I only wish it was to EXPLORE Baja!:bounce::bounce::bounce:

One of DK's alter egos. Qualities admirable in a 12 year old.

Too bad more people don't help others...

Well, if all that people can do is complain about others instead of adding to Baja information... this forum will have a short life.

Trip Reports, Historic Interests, Photography, Q & A, Group trips, Friendships ... That's the value of a forum. (of course that's an opinion I have)

Skipjack Joe - 2-13-2009 at 11:32 AM

One of the good qualities of youth is that they are not judgmental. That comes later in life.
