Papa's for lunch

Here are pictures of one of life's major pleasures..... a trip to Papa Fernandez's Cantina for lunch with a detour to the outback for a Pacifico.

Papa's cantina is in Papa's town. He founded it 60-70 (?) years ago while hunting sea turtles in a panga on a trip from La Paz. Papa was a very, very fine man. He died in 2001 when he was well over 100....nobody knows.... and his shrine and grave are just up the hill from the town.

Clara Fernandez is Gonio's wife. (Gorgonio Fernandez; Papa's son). She cooks very good comidas in the cantina. Oscar is a local kid who doesn't like his picture taken but he does a good job of taking orders for food and a cerveza. He smiles a lot....you would too if you lived at Papa Fernandez.

John Wayne came to Papa's in the early 1970s looking for a place for a fish camp. The pictures of him and Papa were taken then. He was a little taller than Papa!

Hope you like the trip.

A month ago we sat at that corner table in the cantina and ate quesadillas. It was windy that day.

Great photos Bonanza Bucko!

Here is our own Texas Nomad 'Desert Rat' with Papa Fernandez in 1994:

Desert Rat was following Graham Mackintosh's route ('Into a Desert Place'), walking around Baja...

More of Desert Rat's '94 walk from San Felipe to Gonzaga Bay is here: http://www.vivabaja.com/desert_rat/index.html

great pics of the place and people, missed the food pics.........

I made a mistake

bonanza bucko - 2-24-2009 at 05:56 PM

Gonio's wife...the cook in Papa's Cantina, is Claudia....not Clara as I put in my post with the pictures.

She's a very pretty lady and a fine person and she deserves to have her name right here....sorry about the mistake :-(:?:
