Mother and Little Girl Hit by Car (wednesday)

 Pages:  1

MikeLikeBaja - 2-25-2009 at 10:36 PM

Today on Blvd 2000 corridor not to far from the the Otey crossing there was a lady and a little girl laying in the middle of the highway. I am guessing I was their seconds after they were hit. I saw something in the road and thank God I did. I passed the something and then realized it was a person. I was their until the fire fighters arrived. Anybody know what hospital they would have taken a child with major trauma in that area to? I have never been in a situation like this before and I am quite upset. There was a man there keeping the little girl from moving to much and an off duty police officer helping the lady. I had 3 flairs and we put them out to make the traffic go around. The man comforting the girl was a hero to me. But there were onlookers who I asked for their jackets to help keep warm the mom and child and they said no. Then a woman was onlooking with a blanket around her and she gave the blanket up as soon I asked. Amazing, how we react in these kinda situations. Well back to my primary question. Where would they have taken this little girl? No way Cruz Rojas would have the facilities to help her. The mother (Maria) had a broken leg for sure and was in shock.

I sure hope somene helped them and that they'll be ok. I will pray for them. The hospital I know is Hospital Los Angeles, which is state of the art. nancy

Kudos for doing a really good thing, Mike. 2000 is an accident ready to happen all the time. People speed. There are grade connections after interchanges, vehicles pulling in and out. Lots of new residential construction, and commercial, where most residents have to run across the road. The conditions along this road, with the exception of the rural sections, would never be allowed in the states.

Not sure I agree with Gringa Nancy about up front money, not for citizens. Assuming these were Mexican citizens, there are a number of possibilities as to where they were taken. But severely injured people would be treated at a quality facility.

Thanks to Mike for helping. If I was there, I would have too, as I'm sure most in this forum would have and I'd be crying a lot too, for their suffering. I hope they fully recover and, that for his peace of mind, Mike gets more info on their fate.

Mango - 2-26-2009 at 12:28 AM

Mike welcome to Baja Nomad and more importantly, thanks for stopping to help.

Packoderm - 2-26-2009 at 01:34 AM

Was it hit and run?

lizard lips - 2-26-2009 at 08:11 AM

Good job Mike. You do what you have to in a situation like this and you did Mike. I'm sure many others just drove on by. Chances are the ambulance took them to a IMSS Hospital in TJ.

MikeLikeBaja - 2-26-2009 at 08:41 AM

I have to assume it was hit and run. Unless the man helping the child or the off duty police officer hit them. If they did, I would put a very high percentage that they were not at fault. When I passed the lady, I didn't even know there was a child I passed about 3 meters back. They were both in the middle between the left and right north bound lane. Otherwise I or someone else probably would have hit them again. It was around 6:00 am and not that light out. That area honestly is a gauntlet of buses, people standing very near the road, cars pulling in and out, excessive speeds, and people crossing the highway. Does anyone know where the IMSS closest to that area is?

MikeLikeBaja - 2-26-2009 at 08:53 AM

I am no great guy. I almost kept going myself. I was scared that the person was going to be hit again and I did not want to run up and witness that. I was really relieved that she hadn't been and I was actually able to get traffic away. Between pulling over, dumping my tool box out, and grabbing the flairs probably was 30 seconds or more. I don't know if the little girl was hit again, because I didn't see her position the first time.

fdt - 2-26-2009 at 10:06 AM

Welcome to Baja Nomad Mike. Thank you very much for having stoped to help these people. FYI it was a hit and run and both were taken to the Cruz Roja Hospital as you can see here :
http://www.el-mexicano.com.mx/noticias/estatal/2009/02/26/ca...

I did call right now to check and of course information can not be given over the phone but they are both alive. I wasn't even told if they were stable, the most I got is that the child is still there and the father is there, they did not tell me were the mother was transfered to. I don't know how far you want to go with this, if you want to go visit and offer aditional assistance. One thing I can asure you is that contrary to what nancy from portland stated , NO, they do not charge a penny for theire emergency services, ever!
If they need aditional care then that would definately incure in some sort of costs. As for the hospital of Cruz Roja, it is very well equiped to deal with these type of trauma situations. I don't know were you are but if you'd like I can accompany you there so you can personaly check. Let me know.
Saludos
Fernando
It might be good to know for all those that visit Baja California or any part of México what services are provided, since regardless of how much insurance or services you might have or that youre dollar can buy, it will be the Cruz Roja that will be there for you initialy for any emergency and no one else.

fdt - 2-26-2009 at 10:07 AM

The number at the hospital is (664) 608-6700

BajaGringo - 2-26-2009 at 10:16 AM

A friend of mine was in a motorcycle accident / head-on collision a few years back and was taken to the Cruz Roja in Tijuana. He will be the first to tell you that the doctors and nurses there performed miracles just keeping him alive the first few hours. They were able to stabilize him and then prepped him for transport to Scripps in San Diego. The only thing they asked for after almost 36 hours of care was the cost of the medications which was less than $50. His wife gave them all the cash she had with her, about $800.

I have been to the Cruz Roja twice and received excellent care both times - once was an emergency and was never asked for cash up front.

Citizens or not are all treated the same and the Cruz Roja facility were these people were taken is quality.

"Citizens or not are all treated the same and the Cruz Roja facility were these people were taken is quality. "

Mike, I too wish to thank you for your concern and humane actions. I hope the mom and daughter recover fully. I work with kids (and their families), and this story just breaks my heart....

I'm glad that I've donated to Cruz Roja... I imagine most of you have also been stopped and asked to donate. Who knows when I, or a loved one, or one of you might need their help !

24baja - 2-26-2009 at 10:55 AM

I have to say that in the short time I have been a member of this board I am astonished by the unconditional friendship offered to others on this board. I am honoured to be able to learn from your wisdom and thank you for the many lessons I am learning. Connie

Bajahowodd - 2-26-2009 at 12:41 PM

Thanks for the clarification, Fernando. I was sort thrown aback by Nancy's first post, didn't research the foreigner issue, but knew that Mexican citizens are well cared for.

Bajagypsy - 2-26-2009 at 03:29 PM

I to am hoping that the mother and child are doing fine.

I know that when I needed medical attention in Asuncion, I had to practically throw the money at the doctor and nurse, they would not take it. They seemed very embarrased to take it.

[Edited on 2-26-2009 by Bajagypsy]

DianaT - 2-26-2009 at 03:38 PM

I so hope the mother and child fully recover. It is so easy to misjudge the speed of oncoming traffic.

MikeLike Baja, sounds like you really did everything you could. It is just so awful to come across these accidents.

We never pass by one of the Cruz Roja Ambulance collection points without donating. We hope that we will never need their services, but it is good to know they are there if needed.

fdt - 2-26-2009 at 04:27 PM

Were is Mike?

Natalie Ann - 2-26-2009 at 04:49 PM

I, too, have been helped by Cruz Roja - they're angels indeed.

For those who might be interested in donating money to them beyond the dinero dropped into their cups at Baja intersections...
http://www.loscabosguide.com/redcrosslapaz/
Says they will issue a donation receipt upon request.

Thank you so much for the info. The newspaper says 6 in the afternoon. But it was six in the morning. The ladies name was Maria. So its got to be the same people. I will have my wife call the hospital Saturday. If anyone has info about their condition please post it. I am sure the mom is stable unless she had internal injuries. I remember the off duty police officer used my phone to call the ladies family. I will have my wife call that number Saturday and see if we can sensitively get info on their condition. Again thank you all for the help

fishbuck - 2-26-2009 at 06:27 PM

I heard another lady was hit crossing the street today in Tijuana... and every other city in Mexico... and probably the US too.
Anybody know what hospital they are in and if the are okay?

[Edited on 2-27-2009 by fishbuck]

fishbuck - 2-26-2009 at 06:41 PM

No my point is that this probably occurs daily. If this is a true story it is tragic but hardly newsworthy. Is it?
And if it is then we should report and be concerned about all those other people to.
I heard Egogato got hit by a big Ford truck driving to fast. Anyone know what hospital he's in?

Fishbuck, IMO, your posts on this thread are inappropriate. Making jokes about 2 people seriously injured in a hit & run accident shows extreme insensitivity & immaturity...and you wonder why you didn't get any takers to fly with you??

You don't even know if this is true do you? I didn't make a joke about 2 people seriuosly injured.
My joke is about how gulible you are to believe a story like this. It may be true. Or not.
And if people don't want to fly with me I really don't care that much. Sure it would be nice but eventually I'll afford it by myself. And then I won't ask you. You can take a 10 hour drive if you want. I'll fly it in 3.
And if I try to brighten my day by making light of everyday occurances then what do you care.
This board can be a real drag sometimes especially with all the self-rightious a-holes telling other people how to think or talk.
Mind you own business.

An earnest post? Really? How do you know it's earnest. The guy has never posted here before Wenedsday and has a total of 5 posts.
Why come on here and ask his questions. No one here knows. He was at the alleged accident site. He should have asked there.
But he did manage to get a whole bunch of sympathy for himself and the "victims" of this "accident".
Even if this did occur nothing that I say or do (and you also) can change anything about it.
But continue to scold me if it makes you feel better about yourself. It's all my fault.

I think you have not read the original post, Mike seems geniunely (howerver it's spelled) concerned about these people because he personaly witnessed the accident and got involved. He showed concerne for knowing were the people were taken and if they were properly cared for. I looked for something in the news about it and there it was, the 6pm to 6am discrepancy is probably a misprint (they do it often) so I went ahead and called to find out more. I got little information on it and Mike has not asked me to persue it further but what I did learn I posted here.
Yes, there were probably hundreds of people run over on the same day all over the planet and oh well, what can we do about it but when it hits personaly that is when empathy kicks in.
So if a plane goes down in Baja in the next week or so we should all just think that it's just another plane going down as they do all over the world?
Or a drunk gringo gets hassled on Revolucion while looking for a future wife at 3am ?

Ok, now we can say good night.

fishbuck - 2-26-2009 at 11:30 PM

I did reread Mike's last post. He has the lady's family telephone number in his phone. So he had all the information he needed the whole time.
So why come on here and get everyone upset about something that is not really our concern. Did anyone here know anything? Did anyone help?
FDT offered some help (he read a newspaper) and Mike actually turned it down.
So maybe he should not have even posted this story here.

My guess is that Maria and her child are okay and in the hospital receiving the best care Tijuana has. I'm sure that the first responders in Tijuana knew what to do and where to take them.
And they did it without our help.
I'm fairly certain any of you would stop and render assistance if you saw injured people on the road. And I hope that never happens.

My suggestion is that if you have a sensitive emergency that you should contact BajaNomad first.

Fishbuck,

Careful buddie, remember that you are a pilot. And being a pilot you are trained especially for emergency situations, i.e. stalls, spins etc. You have training others do not. It appears to me that the poster was distressed and reaching out for information and a little compassion. Being pilots, we did not have compassion drained from our hearts during flight school. You may want to consider this while looking for flight companions. Fly safe. ;D

Mike

I wrote you a sarcastic response. But I deleted it.
Here is my heartfelt response.

You are an absolute gentleman for stopping to help Maria and her young daughter.
I'm sure it was very tramatic for you. I hope that if I ever find myself in that situation that I can perform as well as you did.
I never carry road flares but I can see now how that might have saved Maria and her daughter's lives. In reading you thread I learned something very useful.

It seems you had the lady's phone number but maybe you were just still in shock and confused a little. I hope you are okay now.
Since you were directly involved you want to follow up on how they are. I hope that you can find out. That might give closure to the emergency and begin the recovery.

And I hope they are recovering well. And I hope that they can be restored to their lives. And that they can tell their story of how a man named Mike saved them.
Good job nomad!

I did not realize I had numbers in my phone until the next day. They may not even be right. The officer called 3 numbers with the area code . The first thing I am going to do Saturday is have my wife call the hospital number that Fernando provided. I would really rather not use the numbers of possible family members so soon. They are going through something very sad. I have not lived some sheltered life, but I have never seen obvious and extreme broken bones and road mutilation. The fact that this was a little girl and her mom was emotionally overwhelming for me. This will be my last defensive post.

BajaGringo - 2-27-2009 at 09:48 AM

No problem Mike. I know what its like to be one of the first to arrive on such a traumatic scene and the effect it has on you. I still have a couple of such scenes burned in my memory and I remember how I followed their fates as well. It will stick with you and only tells me that you are someone of great compassion and heart...

24baja - 2-27-2009 at 12:45 PM

In the early 80's I witnessed a pedestrian hit by a car, I still see his body being thrown like a rag doll over the car and to the ground knocking him out of his boots. My husband, our 2 sons and myself come from an emergency services background and no matter how much we may prepare for emergencies there will always be some that stay clear in our minds eye. If I can offer a little empathy to someone who has witnessed a tramatic scene I will, besides who am I to judge what is tramatic to someone else. Still in my prayers Mike! Connie

Update: My wife called the hospital but they said the mom was not registered there. She then called one of the numbers from my phone. It was a neighbor. The neighbor said that the little girl lost one eye but was going to make it. She said that she didn’t know which hospital the mother was at and was going to look for her tomorrow. The neighbor said that the mother had multiple fractures in her legs and was in need of a lot of blood (must be internal bleeding). She said we can call her tomorrow and get an update. We will ask which hospital and if they need blood. I am guessing some of you will want to donate. thanks

nancyinpdx - 2-27-2009 at 11:21 PM

I'm so sorry that poor baby lost an eye but glad she'll live. Hope her mommy will be ok and also get the blood she needs. Thanks for the updates and please continue them as much as possible. God bless them, Mike, and all of you here that care about them and others.

MikeLikeBaja - 2-28-2009 at 07:15 PM

My wife called and spoke with the neighbor today and the story is completely opposite. The woman is at Hospital General (sounds very generic) and the little girl is the one who is critical and the mom is going to make it. They don't know what type of blood she is. Thanks to all of those that were helpful and caring. Apparently, I am a scammer, liar, and too new to be posting this on here.

I will be happy to meet you in Tijuana to donate some blood.

No Mike, you aren't any of those things, you are a thoughtful, compassionate individual who was unfortunate enough to come across the scene to an accident, get involved & care enough to follow up.

Nothing you said or did deserved the rude greeting you received. There are enough knowledgeable & respectful posters here that I sincerely hope you'll stick around & give the majority a chance to restore your faith in human nature & to discover that one naysayer doesn't speak for the entire group.

Welcome!! (and I personally don't care what brought you to Baja or what brings you back! Just keep on coming!)

Or maybe they can just send some money.

And, if you are really lucky, we'll all be around if you need blood.

Fishbuck,

Your posts lately are in poor taste. Regarding sending money, you seem to be calling the kettle black here. It seems to me that you were recently begging people to cough up money to help subsidize your flying trip.

UnoMas - 2-28-2009 at 08:55 PM

Mikelikebaja, Welcome to Baja Nomads!
This post brought me out of retirement as far as Baja Nomads are concerned........:fire:
I thank you for your compation for your fellow man and your concern of their well being, I hope you stick around and give positive posts here.
I have a few things I would like to say regarding this post,
The only time fishbuck opens his mouth is to change feet, and don't ever get into an airplane with this fool.......unless you are flying it!:lol::lol:

fishbuck - 2-28-2009 at 08:59 PM

Hey Mike

2 more volunteers to donate blood!
Or maybe they can just send money.

ckiefer - 2-28-2009 at 09:04 PM

Uh oh, looks like there's gonna be a lynching tonight, and fishbuck you're gonna have to bend over and take it like a man!

Sharksbaja - 2-28-2009 at 09:25 PM

Make that 3.

Too bad that while you tried to take it all back , you just can't.

David, I'm surprised you didn't give this new guy the benefit of doubt. Why would someone make up a story like that anyhoo?

If you think it's for attention I would say that that prize goes to you know who.

DENNIS - 2-28-2009 at 09:28 PM

Why don't you a-holes just leave it alone and go to bed. You, who think your comments are so important and wonderful, are self deluded. Let it go. There's nobody in the world who will think you made a classy statement so, stop your nonsense. Stop trying to be recognized. It's senseless.
Stop it..........

DENNIS - 2-28-2009 at 09:30 PM

That means you!!!!!!!!!!

Paula - 2-28-2009 at 09:31 PM

Well now, that's a real good idea Dennis.

Yah, I think it's pretty obvious the lack of trust the Bucker has accumulated. Too bad that while you tried to take it all back , you just can't.:P

Hey Mike!

1 more blood donor.
Or maybe he can just send money.

Paula - 2-28-2009 at 09:32 PM

Fishbuck, you're boring.

nancyinpdx - 2-28-2009 at 09:45 PM

Don't worry when a few ppl act weird; sometimes I feel uncomfortable at ppl's responses to my posts or their perceived attitudes or opinions about me here, Lonely Planet Thorntree Mexico branch or other boards I belong to but there are lots of nice ppl on the boards too that care and wanna help out.
I hope you stay here and keep posting. Take care, nancy

Not all of us hold that opinion. Your story rang true, and the truth of the incident was supported by the news articles. Unfortunately, somebody seemed to be having a Bad Hair Day. Bravo to you and your wife for being caring people!

Sharksbaja - 2-28-2009 at 09:47 PM

8 pm and all is(was) well.
Dennis you really shouldn't be so general.

Senseless....oh, I get it, too many ganging up on poor Fishbuck. He deserves every bit of it imo and maybe then some.

I guess "Birds of a feather" covers other demographics. ie; single and drunk. Ga' night sweetie....

UnoMas - 2-28-2009 at 10:05 PM

Wow Dennis has spoken:lol::lol::lol:
One of the reasons I quit participating on this board, I guess I am not one of the righteous few.
O.K. I will go to bed and Obey!
Good bye again.................

You and your a-hole buddy up there can bend over and bite me.
Or, maybe a tender kiss on the big, round soft tissue part since neither of you have the jaws to render a statement.

Statement

ckiefer - 2-28-2009 at 11:19 PM

:lol::lol::lol: You sent us to bed while pretending to do the same! Looks like you need to visit the bathroom and use a little soap on that mouth of yours. How's that for a statement?

Lame. This place used to have a set of balls. They're lost and gone with JR. Too bad.

Bajahowodd - 2-28-2009 at 11:41 PM

Perhaps this thread should be considered as an exemplar for all those who wish to extol the wonders of Baja.

DENNIS - 2-28-2009 at 11:44 PM

I LOVE dirt.

if you had "a set" you would take your "a hole" comments to off topics. There you can get as foul mouthed as you wish. Had you read the entire thread and the other that it refers to, you wouldn't be so quick to fan the flames.

OhhhhPleeeeze.........I've been scolded here by the best. You arn't amongst them.
Where do you come off telling me how to act on this site? Who are you?
Flames are mine to fan and if they don't suit my needs, I'll start my own.
Are you here in Baja?
Are you in any position to tell me how to conduct myself?
Are you a moderator?
Are you a priest?

I'm willing to bet your answer is NO to each question.

When you get out of "Qualifying School," feel free to criticize me. Till then, settle back with your AAA guide book and dream of a place where you want to direct traffic.

Sharksbaja - 3-1-2009 at 12:40 AM

He sounds like a nice guy from what I have read. Just seemed like he made a big deal out of something unnecessarily and stuck with it. OK, I'm done.

DENNIS - 3-1-2009 at 12:42 AM

TIDE.
