Great!

Natalie Ann - 2-28-2009 at 10:06 AM

Tube worms are so neat, Ken, and the one you posted is no exception. I love the color! And that little red/white trumpet thingie off to the right looks like a morning glory on acid.;D:biggrin::dudette:
Thank you!

I could never get tired of looking at nudibranchs. The tube worm is quite beautiful as well. Thanks Ken!

Thanks David, Nena and Paulina. Nena they are amazing little animals aren't they? Closely related to the lowly earthworm, go figger that one out. The little trumpet thingie is the stopper that plugs the top of the tube when the worm retracts (that happens almost instantly when you get too close). It's called an operculum if anybody cares :). Love the term "morning glory on acid" - can I plagiarize that from you?

Who's gonna eat the worm

Osprey - 3-1-2009 at 09:56 AM

Ken, are any of those nudibranchs in the Navanax family? Navanax are famous -- they follow any slime trail and if they encounter another the bigger one eats the smaller one. If they are both the same size, predation is impossible so they mate. I'll let you all put that into old joke vernacular.

BirdDog - 3-1-2009 at 10:09 AM

Once again great pics.

Hi Osprey

These guys are related to Navanax (all are opisthobranchs) but these nudibranchs have no shell. Navanax has an internal shell. Navanax are voracious predators, I have seen them eating other nudibranchs. I have some joke ideas about same-size Navanax, but on second thought that is better left alone :)

Osprey - here's a Navanax on the hunt! They are also very beautiful:
