Hummingbird-like Moth

BMG - 2-28-2009 at 02:26 PM

Quite a few of these big moths come out in the evening to feed. They look a lot like hummingbirds, a bit smaller. Funny how the hummingbirds chase off other hummingbirds but seem to leave the moths alone.

I believe what you have there is a Hyles lineata, or, White-lined sphinx.

See http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/species?l=3477&chosen...

Nice photos.

No worries, they apparently only affect Mormon crops. :lol:
Per the article;

"Management needs:
Occasional outbreaks of caterpillars have damaged tomatoes, grapes, and garden crops in Utah."

Thanks.

BajaBruno, thanks for the info on the moth. They certainly live in a lot of different climates.
