I've been reading the post on lumber and got to wondering if anyone has ever tried to import SIPs (structural insulated panels) houses or other kit
houses to Baja? With the discussions about concrete blocks vs foam block houses, the SIPs panels would seem to be a great option for insulation value
etc.
I'm wondering if anyone has ever imported or tried to import a kit, or pre-engineered house panels like that?

you can import anything...
you just have it sent to the importer and he will forward it to your site
just add around 20-24% to your price
remember no tax if the product is sent directly to baja

You can find at the larger construction supply houses 4' x 8' pannels in stock in Baja. I met an architech in Loreto that has done many homes in Cabo,
La Paz, Loreto. He uses panels from Mexicali.A system with pre- bent corners, window / door jambs. The only way to build. There are a number of
builders in Baja that have built with type system for some time.
We did last year and it is just incredable how much warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer..... And if it makes a difference, fire resistant.

SIP's are a pretty expensive way to build unless you are short for time.
Have you looked at the Tri-D panels ?
I think they are cheaper than foam block in most areas and made in Baja.

I can't find the Baja manuf. website.
Most call them Tri-D but some are calling them 3-D panels.

Tri-D panels are made in Mexicali. 4' width and made in any length you want AKA wall height. It is a wire mesh both sides, of a inner styro-foam. The
wire mesh is connected thru the styro-foam every couple of inches. Tied together with factory corners, door / window caps. You use a plumbers torch to
make the race way for plumbing and electrical. By hand the walls and ceiling are troweled with 1-1/2" concrete both sides. A finish coat of stucco
over that. Wall thickness is 7" to 10" inches. The structural strength is with re-bar concrete corners and wall caps.
We have two built in Tripui with that type system. Mine E5 and John and Rosie A27/28.

that looks like a really neat building system. Definitely going to keep that in mind. What are we talking about for cost , say on one 4'x8' panel?
