Has anyone other than my amigo been hit with a 2% charge for depositing more than 25,000pesos in his accounts (and that is combined accounts!)? He
told me that
--there is a new Mexican law for the banks, and it was effective 1/1/09. Any CASH funds deposited over $25,000 pesos is fined 2% by the Mexican
government. But to understand it further, it's account-holder for ALL accounts at that bank. --

yes, this has been around for a bit now and all we do is deposit a bit less...silly tax for sure...i can understand taxing huge deposits but these
small deposits seems strange.

This is one of those things that makes you scratch your head in wonder.
For years the Mexican government has been trying to change the habits of the people regarding banks. Now when people are getting used to banks they
add this silly surcharge and discourage people from using them.
DUH?
My guess is that it has something to do with tracking drug money. But I seriously doubt this will have any effect on the cartels.

I opened an account with Scotiabank, and the same rules applied, thank God. They would only allow me to put in 2,000 USD without the penalty, so
that's what I did.
Opening a checking account was like buying a home before "deregulation" in the states. I've never seen so much paperwork. I even had to draw them a
map to my home in Punta Banda.
Then, as I watched my peso checking account being devalued on a daily basis, I was grateful that they did not let me open the account for the amount I
had intended. I think there is about 2 bucks left in the account now. I could not get it out fast enough.
I'll get my pesos at the ATM from my US account, like everyone else, thank you very much.
