Camping in Chula Vista

Bajagypsy - 3-6-2009 at 08:40 AM

I'm sure this has been discussed, but I couldn't find anything when I searched, who has any recommendations for campgrounds near chula vista? We are bring the little gypsy's down with us our next trip, and the hotel costs will kill us! looking for cheaper alternatives.

The KOA in CV is a good jump-off spot.....

My parents stay here when in town:

It's affordable, clean, and there are some great trails around the lake.

If you have any other questions for the San Diego area, don't hesitate to ask.

You can camp over on the silver strand right on the ocean.

We used to overnite in the Target parking lot, now our son is stationed and lives in Imperial Beach so we stay there.

Neal Johns - 3-6-2009 at 03:41 PM

WalMart parking lot works for me.

Diver - 3-6-2009 at 03:45 PM

Silver Strand is nice but no dogs on the beach; leashes only in camp.
We normally stay with the old folks and their fancy rigs at the Chula Vista Marina RV park. Nice pool with dog walking a a nice park/beach for the kids next door.
It's not cheap but nothing in SD is !!
Silver Strand is probably the cheapest that you would want to stay at.

Bajaboy - 3-6-2009 at 05:11 PM

Silver Strand is not cheap...at least 25 bucks and only works if you have are self contained...that is have a trailer, rv, etc. Also, limited access with coming and going during morning/evening is a pain.

KOA

I stayed there a couple of times...but it's been almost 10 years! No idea what their prices are these days. Convenient spot though.

Diver - 3-6-2009 at 06:02 PM

Silver Strand and Sweetwater are the cheapest at around $25.
KOA and Chula Vista Marina are both $38 to $50.

Thanks Zac, I think we'll try out Sweetwater next time down.

Campland on the Bay

in Pacific/Mission Beach is a good bet.

They've grass areas for tent camping, easy access to I-5, pool & hottub, clothes washers and all the expected amenities.

A half-hour over the border in Popotla is a campground right on the cliffs; very pretty.

Another 20 minutes south on the tollroad is a big RV park.

take a look at santee lakes . Its very nice withs lots of stuff to do and quite reasonable.

Whatever happened to camping at WalMart? That used to be a U.S. tradition.

Hook - 3-7-2009 at 04:58 AM

We used to use the parking lot at the Old Town transportation center. It's free. We used that with a cabover camper or our former class C RV. But it's been about 5 years since we've done it now.

Another place is the dirt bluffs overlooking the SD River across from Quivira Boat Basin. It's posted as a no-no...........but so many people do it. We asked the guys who are obviously living in their rigs what's up and they said enforcement was non-existent. This was about 3 years ago.

Our other choices were residential areas. On the streets of Coronado, on the streets of Old Town, on the streets of Ocean Beach. Couldnt get the courage to try residential boondocking in areas from National City and south.

Great overview by Roger!!!

When is the day/night in question? Pretty sure we can help out. We live in Mission Bay right at Highway 5 which is 20 minutes from the Border.

Pompano............thanks for the pics. Is Portero now $28?

I have been camping there every year and it has only been $20. DK turned me on to that campground.

Thanks, Fred

thanx for the information, we don't RV, we tent, I will do some looking into the wonderful suggestions. We hope to be there around May 4 or 5. This will be the first time that we haven't drove straight through, with the new truck there isn't room for the kids and us to sleep comfortably at night, while one person drives.

We can help you and your family out when you drive through San Diego.

We have a guest room for you plus a late model RV for the kids to stay in on our property.

Again, we are 2 minutes from Sea World Drive at Mission Bay and I-5, and twenty minutes north of the border.

Security provided of course...:tumble:
