buying booze in Ensenada

bajabird - 3-9-2009 at 10:06 AM

Last trip I learned you cant buy booze at costco until 10am. Is there another shop to get wine at that will sell earlier?

Nowhere in the state before 10:00 AM. That's the law.

wilderone - 3-9-2009 at 10:23 AM

Is this a problem?

DENNIS - 3-9-2009 at 10:27 AM

Not for me. I buy large quantities.

BajaGringo - 3-9-2009 at 10:34 AM

Great!

And your address is???

It has been many years since we used to buy our liqour in Ensenada, but this place along the malecon drive was a favorite place to stop. Perhaps someone will recall it? It is somewhat north of the tourist area. Located in on an easy corner to stop and park.

I recall we bought about a million bottles of rum there back in the day. Now I don't even remember the brand name...small wonder. What WAS that rum again...? Pretty cheap stuff.

Aha...Ron Palmas!

Roger....
Looks like El Sauzal [sign indicates that as well] north of Ensenada, just south of the turn off to HWY 3, the Tecate road. That's the main road that skirts the waters edge so I guess it could be called a Malecon of sorts. Just looking at your foto of the establishment made me thirsty. SALUD.

On further inspection, I think there's a Pemex station on the other corner to the right, just out of sight.

Doesn't anyone find this strange?

Mexicans will ignore most every law on the books but not this? WTF? :?:

Thanks for the help.

Anyone know a good stop for wine along the way south. Like San Quintin?

DENNIS - 3-10-2009 at 02:08 PM

Costco Ensenada has a fair sized selection of wines.

Since I will be going through Ensendada before 8:30 am, and dont want to wait to buy at the costco........ does any place further south (like san quintin) have good wines after 10am. ??

Getting wine South of Ensenada will be tough. The Santo Tomas winery is now open in Santo Tomas and their newer wines are quite good. But you'll be a little early even for there (only an hour, tops, from Ensenada). Why not bring it from the States? Mix it in with your clothes in your luggage and other items.

It's all about timing. Actually, I wish I could recall the name of the place, but as you pass through San Quintin, where the "new road" goes over the bridge, there's a very well stock liquor store on the East Side of the road. Perhaps BajaGringo could help on this.

Are you thinking of the place that is in mini mall, sort of, behind a stone wall and iron gate? I remember being charged way too much for cervesa there.

David K - 3-10-2009 at 06:06 PM

Yah, that is a nice liquor store... where the highway goes up the side of the big hill and right were it turns south towards the bridge.

The name??? Uh, I saw a big sign with 'TECATE' on it!!!:lol::lol:

Thanks for the help. I will look around san quintin tomorrow morning (after 10).

ps, I usually bring plenty down, but never to much............... I just want to pick up a little extra for the week.

Bajahowodd - 3-10-2009 at 11:07 PM

Yes. They've been developing the property for several years. There is a wall around it. A few years ago, I almost got stuck in the mud there during a rainy period. I recall they had a surprisingly large wine selection considering where they were. And some bottles required a corkscrew:lol:

In San Quintin there is a good size grocery store on the east side of the hwy. It is lime green and they have good deals on Tequila. I don't know about wine.
