The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration confirmed the detention in Mexico of Angel Jacome Gamboa, who is described as a high-ranking killer for a
brutal drug gang operating in the Tijuana region.
Jacome was among about 60 people detained early Sunday at a 15th birthday party at a social hall in eastern Tijuana, according to press reports.
Nicknamed El Kaibil, Jacome once worked as a Rosarito Beach police officer and is suspected of participating in the December 2007 attempt to kill the
city's police chief, Jorge Eduardo Montero Alvarez.
Jacome allegedly was a top lieutenant working for Teodoro Eduardo Garcia Simental, a former member of the Arellano Felix cartel who broke away last
year, mounting a brutal fight for control of the region's drug routes and domestic markets.
Authorities say the group is responsible for numerous kidnappings and killings that have occurred in the region in the past year.
A DEA source confirmed the detention today, but requested anonymity because the detention occurred in Mexico. The Mexican military is expected to
announce details of the operation later today.
Jacome's detention follows that of another former police officer suspected of working for Garcia Simental. Jesus Alfonso Trapero Ibarra, known as El
Profe, was arrested by Mexican Federal Police in Tijuana earlier this month. Trapero was described as as a leader of a criminal cell responsible for
smuggling drugs to the United States.

Another of Roasrito Beach's finest. What is it with baptisms and quincieras?
They didn't accuse him of anything specific. He'll be just fine hanging with Mr three letters. Watch the money on this one. Unless he's extradited
to the USA (and I don't see on what grounds they would) he has the narco-friendly attorneys, prosecutors, judges and jailkeepers already in place.
"Authorities say the group is responsible for numerous kidnappings and killings that have occurred in the region in the past year." Many nomads think
these crimes never took place in Rosarito Beach-let alone by a local cop.DENNIS - 3-9-2009 at 04:15 PM

IMO, considering the level of corruption he's doing the best he can. They fired 60% last year and would have liked to have done more. Unfortunately,
you just can't fire someone on suspicion.
Things will continue to get better until the next election. Then they will get worse...Much worse.DENNIS - 3-10-2009 at 02:04 PM

This is good news. I have to wonder what took them so long. Maybe they needed that Merida initiative funding to kick in.
The US trained and funded the group in Columbia known as "Los Pepes" (personas perseguidas por Pablo Escobar)
that put an end to Pablo's reign of terror.
But they started by executing the SOB's who were doing Escobar's dirty work.

Where does that 60% number come from? At the time they said they cleaned house, rehired and retrained the police force after doing exhaustive
background checks and psychological tests. The army was even manning the Rosarito Beach police while they were doing it. Just curious.CaboRon - 3-11-2009 at 08:49 AM

Dennis,
You had better get that 40 caliber installed on the roof
I think we can bring it down in pieces ... call it a bbq or something
Do you have any neighbors that can set up similer installations ?
That way you could get a cross fire set up
Then the RF controled land mines will complete your perimeter
And with your new radio to call in support
Hey it's that simple

I haven't ever seen the Green Angles on the highway,
However, I regularly see them at Barajas in Todos Santos
Gotta keep up their energy , you know
Note: This is not meant to disparage the Green Angles as I have heard so many stories of their unselfish assistance to stranded drivers.

It was- until they released them today... Who said Mexico is slow or investigations and trials? Today's Union Tribune:
"BAJA, ROSARITO BEACH OFFICERS ARE RELEASED
Several of the Rosarito Beach and Baja California state police officers taken in for questioning Sunday by the Mexican military on suspicion of links
to organized crime have been released.
Yesterday, a Rosarito Beach police spokesman confirmed the release of four officers, among them Fernando CeJa Macias, 54, an assistant chief with 28
years in the department. The officers had been questioned and released without charges.
Meanwhile, four additional Rosarito Beach oficers were detained for questioning Monday and two others are being sought, the spokesman said.
The Rosarito Beach officers detained Sunday were part of a roundup by the military that resulted in more than 50 people being taken into custody,
among them Angel JAcome Gamboa, a suspected drug trafficker who is a former soldier and an ex-Rosarito Beach police supervisor.
At least a dozen city and state police oficers were among those detained Sunday. Yesterday, state officials announced two state ministerial police
oficers were released without charges.
In addition, three detained members of the state preventive police were released."

When they released the cops yesterday I was wondering what the sub plot was. Did they rat on the others and are just putting them back on the street
to get slaughtered, or to follow/trace their actions, or what? I did like Cejas- he's the old timer cop with the white handlebar mustache- I guess
even the devil needs friends.
