Wither thou goest peso?

Iflyfish - 3-10-2009 at 09:57 PM

"The peso will slide to 18.2 per dollar from 15.5343 Monday, said Ramírez, the partner at Mexico City-based economic research firm Ecanal and former chief economic adviser to 2006 presidential candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador."

Interesting. With the extraordinary financial crap going on in the U.S., the dollar firms and the peso melts. Sacrifical lamb?

Mango - 3-11-2009 at 12:00 AM

I'm carving wooden nickles as fast as I can!

Good News

CaboRon - 3-11-2009 at 05:22 AM

Good news, the peso is back to what it's really worth ....

A great time to vacation in BCS or mainland Mexico ....
:wow:

And, just wait till the expats in Mexico see an end to imported products on the market shelves. Did you ever try an entrée from the frozen food cases in Costco which was packaged in Mexico? Be prepared to do this:barf: and this:barf: and this:barf: and this:barf:. And, when you're done doing that, you'll do this:barf:...

Nope, never tried one of those.

And Dennis you are close enough to make a monthly run to the border for supplies. I know I would if I were you.

In Todos Santos we have to drive that far to either La Paz or CSL for supplies.

And it seems as if the US products that we sometimes purchase were the returns that were put back on the shelves

Sounds like it's Chula Vista or National City for shopping.

Maybe there could be a gringo shuttle arrangement that goes up once or twice a month.

Thanks for the link to the news site. Are there others that you would recommend? ;D

Lindalou - 3-11-2009 at 12:13 PM

We do most of our food shoping in Chula Vista because of the poor quality of the food over here now!

The prices (in pesos) at the Costco in TJ are already ridiculous - can't imagine what the future will bring :(

I usually shop costco Chula Wanna but go by the TJ one at the border too. Has anyone shopped both sides on similar items and days to see if there is a peso advantage on the Mexico Costco side now? Just curious.

So long as the peso doesn't goeth awayeth (again) we're good.

Looks like Obrador is already campaigning to boot Calderon by having his economics guy predict a peso devaluation trend. Socialist pressure is threatening mexico from countires south of it and now from the USA too.

This guy is poison. If the cartels haven't figured out their ticket to legitimicy, this is it.

Bajahowodd - 3-12-2009 at 04:59 PM

Obrador would be like having Hugo Chavez at our door step. If he actually became president, it would probably mark the first time we would see a massive wave of emmigration of the wealthy.

vandenberg - 3-12-2009 at 06:17 PM

Peso at 14.66 right now.

Peso down to 14.75

Dave - 3-12-2009 at 06:17 PM

Mexico must be spending on its U.S. credit line.

Tiomiguel - 3-12-2009 at 06:21 PM

Was interesting, just for a change of pace and short week, we went to Playa Del Carmen near Cancun. They are pretty smart there, I thought that I would have a deal with my left over pesos from before so brought no greenbacks, Being a canuck. Everything that I could buy was in US dollars and then they converted at current prices into Pesos. Totally stunk as the costs really were much higher. Oh for the backlands of Baja where prices are in pesos and not US dollars.
Don't feel too bad, the Canadian dollar is getting killed as well, but you know for both Canada and Mexico a higher US dollar is better for our economies. Let it be.

Speaking of the rank and file choosing garbage as a leader, what was the mindset of the Tijuana voter when they chose Hank Rohn to lead them? Their chosen liason to the world when they knew full well the man was cartel corrupted....still is.
It almost seemed a slap in the face to America and I believe the voting public in Tijuana saw it the same way.
They don't like us as a nation and sometimes they have the opportunity to show it.
Not often but, sometimes.

This is the quaint Mexicano tradition of cutting off their nose to spite their face .... except they have been using their heads instead ... I guess that's progress ...

Obrador has a better shot this time around. Chavez is gaining popularity and the USA seems to be softening it's stance on Cuba. The Mexican poor outnumber all the others combined and don't be surprised if they think socialism is better than the nothing with no security they now have. If inflation hits strong- things will accelerate toward socialism and Obrador like leaders.

Hank did well in TJ because his policies helped the very poor. He also must have been including free tickets to his private zoo with each vote.

Here is an opportunity for some enterprising gringo (free and unincumbered access to the border is a must)

Will have to keep it on the sly (Immigration you know)

You know what is said about finding a successful business ....

Done all the time. People even advertise in the local papers. It is illegal but unless you're loaded to the gills I doubt anyone would get caught. Even if you do you can always bribe someone.

Tell you what would work:

Set up a small bodega just south of the border. Could be a friend's garage. Contract with someone who would go across on a regular basis and buy those items you can't find. Then send up a truck or van.

Do you remember back in the 80's when the rich Mexicans bought up Coronado Cays and half, or so it seemed, of LaJolla to hide their money.

Seems like things just keep coming around when you are talking about Mexico.
